Copyright Law And Electronic Access To Information, Jessica D. Litman Oct 1996

Copyright Law And Electronic Access To Information, Jessica D. Litman

Articles

At the same time as we have been discovering the Internet’s enormous potential to enhance access to information and revolutionize the ways libraries do business, the Internet’s high profile in popular media has made it the focus of a wide spectrum of fears about the future. This paper focuses on pending proposals to amend copyright law to enhance the control copyright owners wield over the appearance of their works on digital networks. These proposals would stifle libraries’ use of the Internet. Libraries and their supporters must participate in the copyright debate, and think creatively about new models for copyright. The …

Seeing The Law's Limits: A Westerner Comments On Women And The Disparate Impact Of Violence, Nadine Taub Oct 1996

Seeing The Law's Limits: A Westerner Comments On Women And The Disparate Impact Of Violence, Nadine Taub

Connecticut Journal of International Law

We've gathered together, in part at least, because we share a conviction that what laws say matters to women. Having this conviction certainly does not mean we have a simple faith in the notion of rights for women.' But we are likely to see benefits in particular laws for particular womenperhaps the ones who contacted us for help. And, we are also likely see an important role for the law in helping to organize women: The fight for legal rights plays a key role in achieving the changes in consciousness, and the changes in power distribution, that are so crucial …

Women's Rights And Political Economy, Tamara Lothian Oct 1996

Women's Rights And Political Economy, Tamara Lothian

Connecticut Journal of International Law

There is a great effervescence in the world today of group politics and group movements. This historical trend creates two characteristic dilemmas. The first dilemma has to do with the problem of incorporation. For a marginal group, the struggle for greater power, privilege or autonomy, typically takes the form of a quest for incorporation into the existing social order. This struggle for incorporation seems to propel the group in an inherently conservative direction. The strategy is conservative both in its attitude toward existing social arrangements and in the distributive consequences which typically follow the struggle for group preferment. Benefits generated …

Russian Women And Women's Rights: A Case Study In Universalist/Cultural Relativist Debate, Elizabeth Messud Oct 1996

Russian Women And Women's Rights: A Case Study In Universalist/Cultural Relativist Debate, Elizabeth Messud

Connecticut Journal of International Law

On the eve of the twenty-first century, the doctrine of women's rights is enjoying a long-awaited, hard-won, and much celebrated currency. "Women's rights are human rights;"2 "the human rights of women and the girl child are an inalienable, integral and indivisible part of universal human rights; '3 vast and active telecommunications networks are being established to link the women of the world in their cause of international human rights for women. There is a buoyancy and an excitement which pervades this line of rights-inquiry and rights-discourse. The women's rights movement' is characterised by a dynamism which infuses most of those …

A Buffering Strategy For Stabilizing Network Data Rates, Brian Bell Oct 1996

A Buffering Strategy For Stabilizing Network Data Rates, Brian Bell

Theses

In the past ten years, there has been substantial growth in the area of networked applications. The expansion of such Internet applications as USENET and the world wide web has lead to greater demand for faster and higher quality data transmissions. However, the Internet tends to have a bursty traffic pattern. Such a pattern interferes with an application's ability to receive a data stream at a constant rate. A constant rate is necessary for real-time, networked multimedia applications to be able to provide a high quality of service to the user. This thesis proposes a buffering strategy that stabilizes a …

A Vhdl Model Of A Superscalar Implementation Of The Dlx Instruction Set Architcture, Paul Ferno Oct 1996

A Vhdl Model Of A Superscalar Implementation Of The Dlx Instruction Set Architcture, Paul Ferno

Theses

The complexity of today's microprocessors demands that designers have an extensive knowledge of superscalar design techniques; this knowledge is difficult to acquire outside of a professional design team. Presently, there are a limited number of adequate resources available for the student, both in textual and model form. The limited number of options available emphasizes the need for more models and simulators, allowing students the opportunity to learn more about superscalar designs prior to entering the work force. This thesis details the design and implementation of a superscalar version of the DLX instruction set architecture in behavioral VHDL. The branch prediction …

Competition And Facilitation: Contrasting Effects Of Artemisia Tridentata On Desert Vs Montane Pines, Ragan M. Callaway, Eh Delucia, Darrin Moore, R Nowak, W. H. Schlesinger, Brenda J. Moor Oct 1996

Competition And Facilitation: Contrasting Effects Of Artemisia Tridentata On Desert Vs Montane Pines, Ragan M. Callaway, Eh Delucia, Darrin Moore, R Nowak, W. H. Schlesinger, Brenda J. Moor

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Circumstantial evidence suggests that Artemisia tridentata may out-compete Pinus ponderosa and P. jefferyi for water at ecotones between shrub steppe and montane forest vegetation in the Great Basin. Other studies indicate that within the shrub steppe Artemisia may act as a nurse plant for a third species of pine, P. monophylla. We used field experiments to study these contrasting effects of Artemisia on P, ponderosa and P. monophylla within the contest of the distributional patterns in western Nevada of all three species on andesite, and on sites where hydrothermal activity has altered the andesite. At intermediate elevations in the Great …

Lights, Camera, Litigate: Lawyers And The Media In Canada And The United States, Charles W. Wolfram Oct 1996

Lights, Camera, Litigate: Lawyers And The Media In Canada And The United States, Charles W. Wolfram

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Drawing on recent high profile cases in Canada and the United States, the author examines the different extent to which lawyers in those two countries comment to the media about ongoing litigation. He investigates various formal constraints upon lawyer comment, such as court-imposed publication bans and rules of professional responsibility. He also looks at the way in which lawyer behavior is attributable to non-formal, cultural determinants.
