If gamma-ray bursts originate from a galactic source population, then at some level a galactic pattern must exist in their locations. Expected patterns for galactic sources are a concentration towards the galactic center, measured by the mean dipole moment of the locations towards the center, cosθ, where the θi are the angles between the burst locations and the galactic center, or a concentration towards the galactic plane, measured by the mean quadrupole moment about the plane, sin2 b− 1/3 , where the bi are the galactic latitudes of the locations (23,2). Space Science Center

We are working on the development of a new balloon-borne telescope, MARGIE (minute-of-arc resolution gamma ray imaging experiment). It will be a coded aperture telescope designed to image hard x-rays (in various configurations) over the 20 - 600 keV range with an angular resolution approaching one arc minute. MARGIE will use one (or both) of two different detection plane technologies, each of which is capable of providing event locations with sub-mm accuracies. One such technology involves the use of cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) strip detectors. We have successfully completed a series of laboratory measurements using a prototype CZT detector with …

Optical Detection Properties Of Silicon-Germanium Quantum Well Structures, Michael R. Gregg

Theses and Dissertations

A study has been carried out on Si/SiGe multi quantum well structures to determine their applicability as normal incidence infrared detectors in the spectral range of 2-12 micrometers. The research effort was primarily experimental; however, extensive calculations were performed to initially explain the experimental data and then used to design subsequent structures. Multiple quantum well structures grown on both Si[001] and Si[110] substrates via molecular beam epitaxy were studied by photoluminescence, absorption, and photoresponse measurements over a wide parameter space. Variables included quantum well depth and width, well doping, number of wells and growth temperature. Well widths were varied from …
