The Braves / Yankees World Series, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 1996

The Braves / Yankees World Series, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

When Charlie Hayes went falling into the third-base dugout and failed to make the catch on Mark Lemke's pop foul to end the sixth and final game of the World Series there was a brief moment of hope when Braves fans thought just maybe fate had turned. It had not. On the next pitch Hayes made the catch down the third-base side near the stands and the 1996 World Series was history. Only five nights earlier Atlanta fans had been talking about the possibility of a sweep, but not the one that occurred.

Where Do The Rents Go? Land Ownership In An Urban Model, Stephen Ross, John Yinger Nov 1996

Where Do The Rents Go? Land Ownership In An Urban Model, Stephen Ross, John Yinger

Center for Policy Research

Despite the predominance of homeownership, general equilibrium urban models assume that rents flow to absentee landlords or are redistributed to residents. This paper explores open urban models with more realistic forms of land ownership, namely ownership of shares in a land corporation and individual home ownership. These models, which produce capital gains and losses for residents, can yield different comparative static results than previous open models, with post-shock bid functions that are flatter at the periphery or steeper at the center. Moreover, shocks to these models cannot in general be analyzed without knowing the characteristics of all the urban areas …

The Evolving Style Of Libby Larsen, Alicia Cook Nov 1996

The Evolving Style Of Libby Larsen, Alicia Cook

Graduate Thesis Collection

The quality of their work, past and present, is being compared to the great masters of the past, and critics like what they see. Women are composing with the same skill and determination of the modern male composer, and they are succeeding. One women in particular is making a name for herself, not only as a contemporary composer, but also as a strong and articulate supporter for the music and musicians of the present day. Her name is Libby Larsen.

A Real-Time Self-Tuning Web Tension Regulation Scheme, Brian T. Boulter, Zhiqiang Gao Nov 1996

A Real-Time Self-Tuning Web Tension Regulation Scheme, Brian T. Boulter, Zhiqiang Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A self-tuning control scheme is proposed for tension regulation in a web transport system. A computationally efficient self-tuning method is first described. The frequency domain model of the plant is then described. Simulations of the on-line tuning are presented. The paper closes with a discussion of cognizant real-time implementation issues.

The Fitness Of Law: Using Complexity Theory To Describe The Evolution Of Law And Society And Its Practical Meaning For Democracy, J.B. Ruhl Nov 1996

The Fitness Of Law: Using Complexity Theory To Describe The Evolution Of Law And Society And Its Practical Meaning For Democracy, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This article is the second in my series of articles exploring the application of complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory to legal systems. Building on the model outlined in the first installment (in the Duke Law Journal), this work develops an evolutionary theory of legal systems as CAS. It suggests that long-term fitness of the legal system will require use of innovative, adaptive legal institutions and instruments.

Circadian Clock-Controlled Genes Isolated From Neurospora Crassa Are Late Night- To Early Morning-Specific, Deborah Bell-Pedersen, Mari L. Shinohara, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap Nov 1996

Circadian Clock-Controlled Genes Isolated From Neurospora Crassa Are Late Night- To Early Morning-Specific, Deborah Bell-Pedersen, Mari L. Shinohara, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap

Dartmouth Scholarship

An endogenous circadian biological clock controls the temporal aspects of life in most organisms, including rhythmic control of genes involved in clock output pathways. In the fungus Neurospora crassa, one pathway known to be under control of the clock is asexual spore (conidia) development. To understand more fully the processes that are regulated by the N. crassa circadian clock, systematic screens were carried out for genes that oscillate at the transcriptional level. Time-of-day-specific cDNA libraries were generated and used in differential screens to identify six new clock-controlled genes (ccgs). Transcripts specific for each of the ccgs …

On Hack's Law, Riccardo Rigon, Ignacio Rodriguez-Iturbe, Amos Maritan, Achille Giacometti, David G. Tarboton, Andrea Rinaldo Nov 1996

On Hack's Law, Riccardo Rigon, Ignacio Rodriguez-Iturbe, Amos Maritan, Achille Giacometti, David G. Tarboton, Andrea Rinaldo

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Hack's law is reviewed, emphasizing its implications for the elongation of river basins as well as its connections with their fractal characteristics. The relation between Hack's law and the internal structure of river basins is investigated experimentally through digital elevation models. It is found that Hack's exponent, elongation, and some relevant fractal characters are closely related. The self-affine character of basin boundaries is shown to be connected to the power law decay of the probability of total contributing areas at any link and to Hack's law. An explanation for Hack's law is derived from scaling arguments. From the results we …

Enteric Absorption Of Ciprofloxacin During Tube Feeding In The Critically Ill, Stephen M. Cohn, Mark D. Sawyer, Gerard A. Burns, Concertina Tolomeo, Kerry A. Milner Nov 1996

Enteric Absorption Of Ciprofloxacin During Tube Feeding In The Critically Ill, Stephen M. Cohn, Mark D. Sawyer, Gerard A. Burns, Concertina Tolomeo, Kerry A. Milner

Nursing Faculty Publications

To determine the pharmacokinetic properties of ciprofloxacin in the critically ill, we studied seven mechanically ventilated patients with pneumonia during entcral feedings. Subjects received ciprofloxacin 750 mg every 12 h via nasogastric tube and serial serum drug concentrations were measured after the first and fourth dose. After the initial dose, the maximum serum concentration ranged from 1.24–3.06 mg/L, and the area under the time curve from 0–12 h ranged from 3.2–19.65 mg.h/L. Similar levels were noted after dose four. Gastrointestinal absorption of ciprofloxacin in tube fed critically ill patients was decreased, but well above MIC values for many pathogenic bacteria.

Switzerland And Burgundy In The Late Middle Ages, H. Dwight Page Nov 1996

Switzerland And Burgundy In The Late Middle Ages, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the late Middle Ages Switzerland's principal rival was the Duchy of Burgundy. Although the medieval Kingdom of Burgundy has long since vanished, in the fifteenth century Burgundy was one of the most powerful states of Europe.2Its territories included present day Belgium, Holland, the French provinces of Flanders, Alsace, Lorraine, Franche-Comte, Savoy and Burgundy, as well as the three Swiss cantons of Geneva, the Vaud and the Valais. For nearly two millennia, these territories of the old Kingdom of Burgundy have been among the most progressive in Europe. The "loi gombette" of the ancient Burgundians was the most humane of …

Book Review: The Germanic Warrior Clubs, H. Dwight Page Nov 1996

Book Review: The Germanic Warrior Clubs, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Scholarship concerning the migrations of the Germanic tribes and their assimilation into the Roman Empire has been divided for centuries into essentially two schools of thought: the writings of medieval British, French and Italian authors and the historians of the French Enlightenment, such as Montesquieu and Voltaire, who perceived the Germanic migrations as destructive and malicious invasions of the Roman world; the writings of nineteenth and twentieth century German scholar-apologists, who have sought to justify the Germanic migrations by stressing that these movements were necessitated by the pressure exerted upon the Germanic tribes by the westward progressing Huns and by …

Media, Politics And The World Wide Web: A Qualitative Analysis Of The 1996 Presidential Campaign, Christine Sanders Nov 1996

Media, Politics And The World Wide Web: A Qualitative Analysis Of The 1996 Presidential Campaign, Christine Sanders

Student Work

The presidential campaign of 1996 marked the first presidential election where the World Wide Web was widely used. The election provided media outlets with an opportunity to create, for the first time, news content suited to the Web's strengths: interactivity, immediacy, and depth. Much of the research on politics and news examines how reality is constructed through news content. This study used news values and the biases these values create as a framework for studying how politics was presented to the American public via the World Wide Web. This study provided a detailed description of the political reality that was …
