Buckling Of Composite Cylindrical Shells With Geometric, Thickness And Material Imperfections, Yiwei. Li Jan 1996

Buckling Of Composite Cylindrical Shells With Geometric, Thickness And Material Imperfections, Yiwei. Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This dissertation deals with the determination of buckling loads of composite cylindrical shell structures which involve uncertainty either in geometry, namely thickness variation, or in material properties. Systematic research has been carried out, which evolves from the simple isotropic cases to anisotropic cases. Since the initial geometric imperfection has a dominant role in the reduction of those imperfection-sensitive structures such as cylindrical shells, the combined effect of thickness variation and initial imperfection is also investigated in depth. Both analytic and numerical methods are used to derive the solutions to the problems and asymptotic formulas relating the buckling load to the …

Changes In Brain Electrical Activity (Eeg) Of The Awake Freshwater Turtle Trachemys Scripta Elegans During Anoxia, Jacqueline A. Fernandes Jan 1996

Changes In Brain Electrical Activity (Eeg) Of The Awake Freshwater Turtle Trachemys Scripta Elegans During Anoxia, Jacqueline A. Fernandes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

There is evidence that suggests that electrical depression might be an important energy saving mechanism during anoxia. This study investigates in more depth the changes in electrographic (EEG) activity of the awake and behaving anoxia-tolerant turtle Trachemys scripta elegans when the turtle was breathing 100% N2. The drastic depression of electrical activity by 75% shown in response to anoxia suggests that electrical depression may be the major contributor to metabolic depression and conservation of energy necessary for survival of long periods of anoxia. However, adaptative response to anoxia does not simply consist of a mere depression of brain activity. In …

Comparison Of Alkyl-Bonded Alumina And Silica Stationary Phases For Peptide And Protein Separations By High Performance Liquid Chromatography, David Clinton Williams Jan 1996

Comparison Of Alkyl-Bonded Alumina And Silica Stationary Phases For Peptide And Protein Separations By High Performance Liquid Chromatography, David Clinton Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The applicability of a recently developed octadecylalumina (ODA) stationary phase for the preparative separations of proteins and peptides is compared with that of conventional Octadecylsilica (ODS) phases. Chromatographic peak widths, peaks areas, and recoveries of polypeptides were obtained from both types of phases. The ODA phase compares favorably with the ODS phase on small peptides, but exhibits low recoveries on high molecular weight proteins. The results are attributed to the unique fused-microplatelet shape of the ODA particles.

Convex Identification And Nonlinear Random Vibration Analysis Of Elastic And Viscoelastic Structures, Jianjie Fang Jan 1996

Convex Identification And Nonlinear Random Vibration Analysis Of Elastic And Viscoelastic Structures, Jianjie Fang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This dissertation deals with the identification of boundary conditions of elastic structures, and nonlinear random vibration analysis of elastic and viscoelastic structures through a new energy-based equivalent linearization technique. In the part of convex identification, convex models are utilized to represent the degree of uncertainty in the boundary condition modification. This means that the identification is actually the identification of the convex model to which the actual boundary stiffness profile belongs. Two examples are presented to illustrate the application of the method. For the beam example the finite element analysis is performed to evaluate the frequencies of a beam with …

Measurement Of Brain Activity Using An Ultrasonic Measure Of Localized Blood Flow, Petko Dimitrov Dinev Jan 1996

Measurement Of Brain Activity Using An Ultrasonic Measure Of Localized Blood Flow, Petko Dimitrov Dinev

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This dissertation presents a new type of two-dimensional, real time, color ultrasonic scanner able to measure and display brain metabolism by monitoring amplitudes of localized changes of intracranial interfaces. A real time image is obtained with a flexible array of transducers which eliminates the strong reflection from the skull due to a shape mismatch, and reduces the topological mislocations in the image. The image is generated by a superposition of a gray scale image representing static structures, and a color coded pattern representing motion information. The new technique of motion detection based on image subtraction features high accuracy and gives …

Nest Caging As A Sea Turtle Management Strategy: Do The Benefits Outweigh The Costs On Urban Beaches?, Stephanie Lynne Adamany Jan 1996

Nest Caging As A Sea Turtle Management Strategy: Do The Benefits Outweigh The Costs On Urban Beaches?, Stephanie Lynne Adamany

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Caging of sea turtle nests has used by City of Boca Raton's sea turtle conservation program to deter terrestrial predators and reduce human disturbance. The juxtaposition of nest cages and artificial lighting may pose serious threats to hatchlings. I addressed possible negative effects of cages on sea turtle hatchlings' seafinding abilities and potential "cage-trapping" under natural and artificially illuminated conditions. Cages did not effect hatchling orientation on artificially illuminated or dark beaches. Hatchlings did not experience any delay in cage escape on dark beaches, but a significant number were trapped inside the cages on artificially illuminated beaches. The highest incidence …

Multiresolution Analysis Of Glottal Pulses, Agnieszka C. Miguel Jan 1996

Multiresolution Analysis Of Glottal Pulses, Agnieszka C. Miguel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Glottal pulse models provide vocal tract excitation signals which are used in producing high quality speech. Most of the currently used glottal pulse models are obtained by concatenating a small number of parametric functions over the pitch period. In this thesis, a new glottal pulse model is proposed. It is an alternative approach, which is based on the projection of glottal volume velocity over multiresolution subspaces spanned by wavelets and scaling functions. A detailed multiresolution analysis of the glottal models is performed using the compactly supported orthogonal Daubechies wavelets. The wavelet representation has been tested for optimality in terms of …

Naturalist Tendencies In Three Novels By Edith Wharton, Marjorie L. Mullins Jan 1996

Naturalist Tendencies In Three Novels By Edith Wharton, Marjorie L. Mullins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Although Edith Wharton once said she considered herself a writer of novels of manners, she exhibits naturalist tendencies in her writing. She shows the potential of both heredity and environment to ensnare and suppress the individual in his or her quest for self-determination. In The House of Mirth and The Age of Innocence, Wharton reflects upon the changes that caused society to enforce its rules all the more strongly in an attempt to maintain its stability. In Ethan Frome she develops one of the generally accepted themes of naturalism: the waste of human potential because of the forces of society. …

Mother-Child Interaction And Victimization By Peers During Middle Childhood, Regina Ann Finnegan Jan 1996

Mother-Child Interaction And Victimization By Peers During Middle Childhood, Regina Ann Finnegan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Mother-child interactions that might predict peer victimization for children during middle childhood were examined. 184 middle class boys and girls in the 4th through 7th grades participated in the study. Child report measures of 6 dimensions of maternal parenting style and 7 types of child coping during mother-child conflict were developed. These family variables were reduced to a smaller set of variables and related to peer reports of children's victimization by peers, internalizing problems with peers, and externalizing problems with peers. Results indicate that, for boys, maternal overprotectiveness is associated with peer victimization for boys who use fearful or submissive …

Nurses' Perceptions Of Their Ability To Interact With Family Members In The Intensive Care Unit, Diane Patricia Pagano Jan 1996

Nurses' Perceptions Of Their Ability To Interact With Family Members In The Intensive Care Unit, Diane Patricia Pagano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The purpose of this research was to explore and describe nurses' perceptions of their ability to interact with families under a variety of circumstances in the intensive care unit. Bandura's theory of self-efficacy (1986) provided a framework for the study. Twenty-six critical care nurses ranked their experiences and perceived self-efficacy on a list of twenty situations of family-nurse interaction. Information about years of experience in critical care nursing, personal experience of family illness, and family nursing courses was also gathered. The results of this study suggest that nurses' sense of self-efficacy varies with the circumstances of family-nurse interaction. Level of …

Object-Oriented Model For A Manufacturing Resource Planning System, Karen Mary Kastritis Jan 1996

Object-Oriented Model For A Manufacturing Resource Planning System, Karen Mary Kastritis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Manufacturing Resource Planning systems are functionally complex systems. In providing effective resource management tools, they support the integration of a wide variety of complex functions. These systems also undergo frequent changes as business needs change. For these reasons, analysis techniques which provide methods to create clear, flexible systems must be sought. Object oriented analysis is such a technique. This thesis presents the development of an object oriented model for a Manufacturing Resource Planning system (MRPII). It will be shown that the use of objects and object oriented techniques to model complex systems such as MRPII results in system models which …

Novel Dna Sequences Of The Endangered Florida Semaphore Cactus, Christopher James Dougherty Jan 1996

Novel Dna Sequences Of The Endangered Florida Semaphore Cactus, Christopher James Dougherty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The population decline in the Florida Semaphore cactus, Opuntia corallicola, due to grazing by the moth, Cactoblastus cactorum, has placed this plant species on the verge of extinction in the Florida Keys. Although this semaphore cactus is endemic to Florida, it was mis-named as an almost uncommon Jamaican species (Opuntia spinosissima) in the 1970s. Our goal was to provide genetic data to distinguish these cacti with nuclear and chloropast genes previously used in other plant phylogenetic analyses. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred from nucleotide sequence variation in both the Leucine-Phenylalanine transfer RNA intergenic spacer (trnL-trnF) and ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (rbcL) genes …

Neural Network Based Routing Optimization For Atm Switching Networks, Ercan. Sen Jan 1996

Neural Network Based Routing Optimization For Atm Switching Networks, Ercan. Sen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This dissertation proposes amodular Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based buffer allocation and routing control model for ATM switching networks. The proposed model considers limited buffer capacity which can adversely impact the switching performance of ATM switching networks. The proposed ANN based approach takes advantage of the favorable control characteristics of neural networks such as high adaptability and high speed collective computing power for effective buffer utilization. The proposed model uses complete sharing buffer allocation strategy and enhances its performance for high traffic loads by regulating the buffer allocation process dynamically via a neural network based controller. In this study, we …

Orientation And Survival Of Loggerhead Sea Turtle Hatchlings (Caretta Caretta L.) In The Nearshore Environment, Lawrence Glenn Jan 1996

Orientation And Survival Of Loggerhead Sea Turtle Hatchlings (Caretta Caretta L.) In The Nearshore Environment, Lawrence Glenn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Hatchling sea turtles emerge at night from underground nests, crawl to the ocean, and swim out to sea. In this study, I determined how offshore orientation and shallow-water predation rates varied under natural (sand bottom and patch reef) and modified (submerged breakwater and open-beach hatchery) ecological circumstances. Hatchling offshore orientation in the sea was normal under all conditions; there were no significant differences in either scatter or direction among groups. However, predators (tarpon, snapper, barracuda, jacks, and grouper) took more hatchlings as they swam over submerged reefs, and after they entered the water in front of hatcheries. Predators were concentrated …

On Boolean Algebras And Their Role In Analysis, Katarzyna Winkowska-Nowak Jan 1996

On Boolean Algebras And Their Role In Analysis, Katarzyna Winkowska-Nowak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The relations between complete and $\sigma$-complete covers of a Boolean algebra are examined. The Dedekind completion of a Boolean algebra is shown to be a quotient of any complete cover. Atoms of a Boolean algebra correspond to atoms of the Dedekind completion hence the Dedekind completion of an atomic Boolean algebra is isomorphic to the power set of the set of all atoms. There exists a correspondence between complete (sigma-complete) homomorphisms and full (sigma-complete) ideals. The explicit form of the Dedekind completion is given for the Boolean algebra generated by all semiopen subintervals of [0,1) as the atomless, complete Boolean …

Performance Analysis Of Multi-Base Station Slotted Aloha For Wireless Lan In A Nakagami Fading Environment, Anju S. Chopra Jan 1996

Performance Analysis Of Multi-Base Station Slotted Aloha For Wireless Lan In A Nakagami Fading Environment, Anju S. Chopra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Capture effect has shown considerable improvement on performance of slotted ALOHA systems. Further, improvement is expected by increasing the number of base stations. The performance of such slotted ALOHA systems is analyzed with the aid of Equilibrium point analysis. Packet dropping due to finite number of retransmissions is taken into account. The numerical results indicate that the finite number of retransmission trials mainly contribute to the improvement of the packet dropping probability in the range of light input traffic. The use of multiple base stations improves the overall throughput and the average transmission delay in the range of heavy input …

Nursing Practice In A Contemporary Health Care Corporation: Nurses' Tensions And Torment, Beverly Ann David Jan 1996

Nursing Practice In A Contemporary Health Care Corporation: Nurses' Tensions And Torment, Beverly Ann David

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Tensions exist between the ideology of caring as a nursing practice ideal, and the corporately managed health care settings in which nurses work. The objective of this critical feminist ethnography was to understand these tensions by grounding them in nurses' experiences and perceptions. Data was gathered through ethnographic interviewing and participant-observations of a nurse key informant and her co-workers in the pediatric unit of a corporately managed acute care hospital. The data were analyzed according to the coding procedures and comparative method described by Strauss and Corbin (1990). Four characteristics of the corporate health care culture that conflict with nurses' …

Patient Advocacy: Shared Vulnerability And Personal Integrity, Lynne E. Lomas Jan 1996

Patient Advocacy: Shared Vulnerability And Personal Integrity, Lynne E. Lomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring and phenomenological methodology are the foundation of this descriptive study of four nurses' experiences of patient advocacy. The "meaning units" or constituents expressed by the participants were synthesized into an integrated whole to embody the experiences of patient advocacy and then objectively described by the researcher. Six components that embody the nurses' experiences are knowledge of self and others, caring commitment, expenditure of self, risks, emotional responses and psychological evolution and mutual affirmation. A better understanding of nurse's experiences of patient advocacy may provide more effective and satisfying nurse-client, nurse-as-person and nurse-as-professional relationships.

Philosophical Exploration In Search Of The Ontology Of Authentic Presence, Danielle Moffatt Linden Jan 1996

Philosophical Exploration In Search Of The Ontology Of Authentic Presence, Danielle Moffatt Linden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study examines authentic presence. Authentic presence, as identified in the study, comes from a theory of nursing developed by Anne Boykin and Savina Schoenhofer, Nursing as Caring: A Model for Transforming Practice. Authentic presence must be viewed in a philosophical context in order to be fully understood in practice. This analysis of Nursing as Caring reveals philosophical underpinnings in the theory's foundation. The primary texts of Soren Kierkegaard and Gaston Bachelard, both philosophers, are used to develop a foundation upon which is built a preliminary aesthetic framework to guide the examination of authentic presence. It is proposed that this …
