Relations Between Social-Environmental Characteristics Of Families And Career Decision/Indecision Of Secondary Tech Prep Students, Garlon Mobley Webb Jan 1996

Relations Between Social-Environmental Characteristics Of Families And Career Decision/Indecision Of Secondary Tech Prep Students, Garlon Mobley Webb

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The study examined the relations of social-environmental characteristics of families and demographic variables on career decision/indecision of 425 secondary Tech Prep students in North Florida. Career decision/indecision was the dependent variable, measured by the Career Decision Scale (Osipow, Carney, Winer, Yanico, & Koschier, 1987). Predictor independent variables included social-environmental characteristics of families as measured by the Family Environment Scale (Moos & Moos, 1981). Other predictor independent variables included academic achievement (reading comprehension and mathematics)' gender, economic disadvantage and race.

No significant mean differences were found by gender and by grade of Tech Prep students on the Certainty Scale or the …

Design And Evaluation Of An Environmental Science Curriculum For Secondary Students, Carolyn Knox Cooper Jan 1996

Design And Evaluation Of An Environmental Science Curriculum For Secondary Students, Carolyn Knox Cooper

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Environmental education is becoming an increasingly important component of secondary science education as our society attempts to minimize the exploitations and damaging actions of humankind on the earth. Environmental education has evolved primarily from environmental consciousness in the 1960s to an environmentally active focus in the 1990s. This project examined the effectiveness of an environmental education curriculum that focuses on improving environmental behaviors and attitudes as well as knowledge.

The review of the literature for this project indicates that responsible environmental behaviors are linked to four types of environmental education categories. These categories are hierarchical and include: 1) ecological concepts, …

Coping Strategies And Adaptation Mechanisms Utilized By Female Holocaust Survivors From The Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Joy Erlichman Miller Jan 1996

Coping Strategies And Adaptation Mechanisms Utilized By Female Holocaust Survivors From The Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Joy Erlichman Miller

Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation

The female experience during the Holocaust has largely been ignored as significantly different than that of male counterparts. This gender-specific research study investigates the "unique, poignant voices" of women's coping strategies utilized during internment in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp.

Focusing specifically on the video oral history testimonies of the complete collection of female survivors of Auschwitz, which were produced by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the study suggests that the predominate coping strategies used by females was affiliation with others as the means of survival. Through the utilization of clustering sheets, the data suggested that affiliation and assistance from …

A Content Analysis Study Of Portable Assisted Study Sequence Mathematics Curricular Materials For Migrant Students Using The National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics Standards, Karen I. Conger Jan 1996

A Content Analysis Study Of Portable Assisted Study Sequence Mathematics Curricular Materials For Migrant Students Using The National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics Standards, Karen I. Conger

Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation

The need for change in the mathematics curricula in our public schools has been well documented (Kirwan, 1990; National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983; National Research Council, 1989; Overby, 1993). Testing surveys show low overall performance at every age throughout the K-12 levels. The Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics, (Standards) issued by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) in 1989 are designed to move mathematics curricula forward to meet the needs of students for the future. The analysis of new curricular materials is essential in order to produce materials that meet recommended standards.

Migrant students …

Three-Dimensional Segmentation And Visualization Of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data, William L. Bell Jr.

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I shall study and compare various methods for manipulating two- and three-dimensional image data produced with a nuclear magnetic resonance scanner. In particular, I will examine ways of focusing upon specific structures internal to the object under study (segmentation); and will explore means of rendering realistic images of these structures on a computer screen using depth-cueing, shading, and ray-casting techniques.
The 3DHEAD volumetric dataset used for this project was created with the Siemens Magnetom and was provided courtesy of Siemens Medical Systems, Inc., Iselin, NJ. This dataset consists of 109 slices of a human head, with each …

Brick Versus Earth: The Construction And Destruction Of Confederate Seacoast Forts Pulaski And Mcallister, Georgia, David P. Eldridge Jan 1996

Brick Versus Earth: The Construction And Destruction Of Confederate Seacoast Forts Pulaski And Mcallister, Georgia, David P. Eldridge

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The United States government created America's third coastal defense system during the early-to-mid nineteenth century based upon the recommendations of the Board of Engineers of 1816. The engineers of 1816 believed the most economical means of protecting America was the construction of large, permanent forts along key areas of America's coast.

Union forces under Brigadier General Quincy Gillmore seized Fort Pulaski in April of 1862. Pulaski was one of the most formidable forts built under the third system. Gillmore required two months to install the weapons used against Pulaski; most of the time was spent installing smoothbore Columbiads, the standard …

Recent Challenges To The Persistent Dual Banking System, Heidi Mandanis Schooner Jan 1996

Recent Challenges To The Persistent Dual Banking System, Heidi Mandanis Schooner

Scholarly Articles

This essay begins with a brief discussion of the history of the dual banking system in Part I. Part II reviews the justifications for, and criticisms of, the dual banking system. Part III details the recent challenges to the dual banking system. Part IV looks to the future of the dual banking system and concludes that Congress has chosen not to preempt entirely the states' authority despite the continued erosion of states' authority over safety and soundness issues. This leaves the states with a continuing opportunity to serve as laboratories of innovation in bank regulation. If the states seize this …

Square Pegs And Round Holes: Does Sentencing For Environmental Crimes Fit Within The Guidelines?, Lucia A. Silecchia, Michael J. Malinowski Jan 1996

Square Pegs And Round Holes: Does Sentencing For Environmental Crimes Fit Within The Guidelines?, Lucia A. Silecchia, Michael J. Malinowski

Scholarly Articles

This article presents an overview of the Proposed Guidelines and assesses their potential to improve both the existing sentencing scheme and, more importantly, the environmental behavior of corporate citizens. This analysis concludes that, while the Proposed Guidelines improve current haphazard sentencing practices, it is difficult to predict their efficacy in furthering environmental policy. The fundamental problem is that traditional criminal sanctions are not easily applied to non-traditional offenders committing non-traditional offenses. Rather than expressing optimism about the Proposed Guidelines, this paper suggests that the behavior of corporations could be modified more efficiently through non-criminal incentives coupled with increased criminal prosecution …

Legal Skills Training In The First Year Of Law School: Research? Writing? Analysis? Or More?, Lucia A. Silecchia Jan 1996

Legal Skills Training In The First Year Of Law School: Research? Writing? Analysis? Or More?, Lucia A. Silecchia

Scholarly Articles

This Article will explore the issues that arise as more and more law schools face important definitional questions: To what extent should first year programs focus on providing in-depth research and writing training? To what extent should those programs adopt a more holistic curriculum that exposes students to a range of skills beyond research and writing?

The Article will begin with a description of what is actually done in first year programs at American law schools. This information was gathered in a Spring 1995 survey of law school research and writing programs, to which representatives of 111 schools responded. It …

The Humanitarian Law Of The Yugoslavia War Crimes Tribunal: Jurisdiction In Prosecutor V. Tadic, Geoffrey R. Watson

Scholarly Articles

On October 2, 1995, the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia' held that the Tribunal has jurisdiction to try Dusko Tadic, a Bosnian Serb, for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Appeals Chamber ruled that the establishment of the Tribunal was lawful, that the Tribunal's primacy over national courts does not violate international law, and that the Tribunal's jurisdiction extends to crimes committed in internal armed conflict. The decision cleared the way for the first international war crimes trial since Nuremberg and Tokyo. The Appeals Chamber was right to uphold the validity of the …

Government Accountability In The Twenty-First Century, Marshall J. Breger Jan 1996

Government Accountability In The Twenty-First Century, Marshall J. Breger

Scholarly Articles

In this short paper I hope to point out two aspects of twenty-first century political life that relate to the challenge of ensuring government accountability. The first point relates to how advances in computer and media technology increase the potential of government accountability and how these technological developments will increase implementation of the principle of subsidiarity, or, in the American context, devolution of political power to state and local governments. Second, I will address the impact of these developments on administrative law in the next century.

Developments In Liability Theories And Defenses, Robert A. Destro Jan 1996

Developments In Liability Theories And Defenses, Robert A. Destro

Scholarly Articles

Litigators with experience in the field of religious liberty believe that courts do not seem to take religious liberty claims and defenses very seriously; however, it is difficult to know why. To be sure, the anecdotal evidence is certainly there, not only in the reported cases, but also in the actual courtroom experiences of those who attempt to raise religious liberty claims and defenses. In one Texas tort case, a trial court judge stated that she would not permit the Church "to hide behind the first amendment;" in a Maryland case a number of years ago, I was asked by …

The Effects Of Herbicides On Microbial And Mycorrhizal Populations In Native Prairie, Corn, And Non-Native Prairie Vegetation, Using The Biolog Technique, Susann E. Ahrabi-Fard Jan 1996

The Effects Of Herbicides On Microbial And Mycorrhizal Populations In Native Prairie, Corn, And Non-Native Prairie Vegetation, Using The Biolog Technique, Susann E. Ahrabi-Fard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Soil bioremediation has primarily focused on the use of free living, actively growing microorganisms to degrade toxic organic substances. Recently, however, plants and rhizosphere activity, including mycorrhizal fungi have been increasingly studied to determine the role that consortial assemblages may play in bioremediation. While the enhanced absorbtion of nutrients, water, and minerals by mycorrhizal fungi has been well documented, less is known about their role in the degradation of soil contaminants. Using the Biolog plate technique, microbial communities were characterized in Native Prairie, Corn, and Non-Native Prairie vegetative strips prior to, and after two applications of Acetachlor, Alachlor, and Atrazine. …

Honor Among Thieves? Socio-Economic Theories Of Thorstein Veblen In The Plays Of David Mamet, Steven Allan Halverson Jan 1996

Honor Among Thieves? Socio-Economic Theories Of Thorstein Veblen In The Plays Of David Mamet, Steven Allan Halverson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Award-winning playwright David Mamet has acknowledged numerous times his indebtedness to the socio-economic theories of turn-of-the-century economist Thorstein Veblen, whom Mamet credits as influencing the motivation of the characters in several of his plays set in work-related environments.

Veblen, who was largely influenced by Darwin and Freud, declared that the economic institution of capitalism encourages an instinctive "predatory animus" in man to surface due to capitalism's encouragement of the ownership of private property. Veblen asserted that the desire for private property goes beyond one's essential physiological needs and is driven instead by the psychological drive to improve one's self-esteem and …

Passages: A Case Study Of An Iowa Female Secondary Principal, Victoria L. Robinson Jan 1996

Passages: A Case Study Of An Iowa Female Secondary Principal, Victoria L. Robinson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this exploratory case study was to identify and describe one female Iowa secondary principal's career path to the principalship in an Iowa public high school. Several factors were considered in the selection of the participant including: demographics, administrative experience, and her willingness to spend time in the interview process. To provide semi-structure to the interviews and in turn suggest the conceptual frame for analyzing the data, the following questions were formulated:

1. What were the experiences which served as perceived barriers in the career path to the high school principalship for one Iowa female high school principal? …
