Model Equations From Gyrokinetic Theory For A Non-Neutral Plasma To Include Temperature Effects And Applications To A Plasma Of Infinite Length, S. Neil Rasband
Model Equations From Gyrokinetic Theory For A Non-Neutral Plasma To Include Temperature Effects And Applications To A Plasma Of Infinite Length, S. Neil Rasband
Faculty Publications
Gyrokinetic equations are derived for applications to non-neutral plasmas in constant, straight magnetic fields wherein E X B drift velocities are of the same order as thermal velocities. The ratio of the E X B rotation frequency to the cyclotron frequency and the ratio of the gyroradius to a plasma scale length are assumed to be of order epsilon and terms are retained in the gyrokinetic expansion to second order to include finite-Larmor-radius (FLR) effects. A mode equation is obtained for a non-neutral plasma in the infinite-length approximation. The singularities of this equation are compared and contrasted with the familiar …

Experiments In The Coordinated Control Of An Underwater Arm/Vehicle System, Timothy W. Mclain, Stephen M. Rock, Michael J. Lee
Experiments In The Coordinated Control Of An Underwater Arm/Vehicle System, Timothy W. Mclain, Stephen M. Rock, Michael J. Lee
Faculty Publications
The addition of manipulators to small autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can pose significant control challenges due to hydrodynamic interactions between the arm and the vehicle. Experiments conducted at the monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) using the OTTER vehicle have shown that dynamical interactions between an arm and a vehicle can be very significant. For the experiments reported in this paper, a single-link "arm" was mounted on OTTER. Tests showed that for 90-degree, two-second repetitive slews of the arm, the vehicle would move as much as 18 degrees in roll and 14 degrees in yaw when no vehicle control was …
High-Sensitivity Absorption Spectroscopy In Fe Ii, Scott D. Bergeson, K. L. Mullman, J. E. Lawler
High-Sensitivity Absorption Spectroscopy In Fe Ii, Scott D. Bergeson, K. L. Mullman, J. E. Lawler
Faculty Publications
We report the first measurements of UV oscillator strengths (ƒ-values) in Fe II from a high-sensitivity absorption experiment developed at the University of Wisconsin. The accuracy of our measurements is demonstrated by our reproducing well-known ƒ-value ratios in Fe I and Fe II. The first laboratory ƒ-value measurement of the 160.845 nm transition in Fe II is presented and compared to values in the literature. While this paper focuses on Fe II, the high-sensitivity absorption method that we have developed is applicable to essentially every element in the periodic table, for both neutral and ionized species, over a broad range …
An Evaluation Of The Norfolk Interagency Consortium's Community-Based System Of Care For At-Risk Youth, Melody Bingman Wilt
An Evaluation Of The Norfolk Interagency Consortium's Community-Based System Of Care For At-Risk Youth, Melody Bingman Wilt
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The primary purpose of this research was to design and to implement an evaluation model for the Norfolk Interagency Consortium (NIC). The research design employed in this study focused on four areas of investigation: program clarification, processes and activities, outcomes, and cost. The study utilized qualitative and quantitative methods and procedures.
The program clarification stage of the research served as a pre-evaluative phase. An evaluability assessment was incorporated to define and clarify the NIC'S program components and goals, and determine which goals were evaluable. Data regarding the target population also were collected.
The processes and activities investigation used a survey …
Application Of Reanalysis Techniques For Pattern Design Of Spot Welds, Young San Kim
Application Of Reanalysis Techniques For Pattern Design Of Spot Welds, Young San Kim
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Extensive benchmarking on competitive cars has shown that the durability of vehicles, assembly-induced variations, and assembly cost are directly related to the quality and number of spot welds. On most luxury cars, approximately 4,500 to 5,000 spot welds are found. On less expensive cars, the range is from 3,500 to 4,500. These cars usually inherit more noise, rattles, squeaks, and other quality-related problems. These problems have motivated the search for a new capability to systematically place welds in the most critical areas, with a minimum number of welds for car bodies, while satisfying all performance requirements (e.g., stiffness, stress distribution, …
A Decision Support Model For Large Systems Using Quality Function Deployment And Goal Programming: A Capital Budgeting Problem, Kenneth Lindsey Jr.
A Decision Support Model For Large Systems Using Quality Function Deployment And Goal Programming: A Capital Budgeting Problem, Kenneth Lindsey Jr.
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Effective planning for the modernization of U.S. Air Force fighter aircraft requires a perception of the future tasks these aircraft will be called upon to perform, and the improvements and modifications that will be required to successfully accomplish those tasks. A great deal of research has been done in the areas of military strategy, quality function deployment, capital budgeting, and goal programming, as separate areas of study. This thesis details the research and analysis performed for a project called The Fighter Configuration Plan (FICOP), in which these areas were integrated in a decision support model to aid the Air Force …
Modelling An Optical Fiber Bragg Grating, Claudio Oliveira Egalon
Modelling An Optical Fiber Bragg Grating, Claudio Oliveira Egalon
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A theoretical investigation of a single mode optical fiber with one and two superimposed Bragg grating is presented. The formulation relies in the determination of an approximate solution in the asymptotic region of one of the fiber parameters. A correction is then applied to the asymptotic solution using the Method of the Successive Approximations also known as the Piccard Method. The approximation was then compared to the numerical solution using the Runge-Kutta method. Assuming that each Bragg grating has modulation frequencies given by Ω1 and Ω2, it has been found that the second Bragg grating shifts the …
The Tacit Dimension Of Organizational Learning, Thomas Reeder Robinson
The Tacit Dimension Of Organizational Learning, Thomas Reeder Robinson
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This research was conducted to observe the self-reflections of an organizational participant group to further understand the organizational learning phenomenon. The participant group consisted of the 15 managers, spanning three levels of management, of a large engineering group in the southeastern United States.
The intent of the research was to generate theory, rather than to test theory. To accomplish this objective, a qualitative research methodology in a participatory action framework was modeled from Keating's (1993) Organizational Learning Process (OLP) to co-construct participants' organizational reflections. The methodology included individual interviews designed to elicit spontaneity that co-generated organizational perspectives. These perspectives were …
Numerical Simulation Of Complex, Three-Dimensional, Turbulent-Free Jets, Robert V. Wilson
Numerical Simulation Of Complex, Three-Dimensional, Turbulent-Free Jets, Robert V. Wilson
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Three-dimensional, incompressible turbulent jets with rectangular and elliptical cross-section are simulated with a finite-difference numerical method. The full Navier-Stokes equations are solved at low Reynoids numbers, whereas at high Reynolds numbers filtered forms of the equations are solved along with a sub-grid scale model to approximate the effects of the unresolved scales. A 2-N storage, third-order Runge-Kutta scheme is used for temporal discretization and a fourth-order compact scheme is used for spatial discretization. Although such methods are widely used in the simulation of compressible flows, the lack of an evolution equation for pressure or density presents particular difficulty in incompressible …
