The Effects Of Ibuprofen On Exercise-Induced Muscle Soreness And Performance, Atta Kofi Osei
The Effects Of Ibuprofen On Exercise-Induced Muscle Soreness And Performance, Atta Kofi Osei
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study was designed to investigate whether the ingestion of ibuprofen prior to or after a 30-min bout of downhill (-10%) treadmill running would result in reduced sensation of soreness. A secondary purpose was to investigate whether ibuprofen would augment the diminished muscle performance following downhill running. Subject consisted of 21 males (age= 20.3 ± 1.7 years; weight= 77.4 ± 7.8 kg). Each subject was randomly assigned to either a control group, a prophylactic group which received 600 mg of ibuprofen 1 hour prior to the 30-min treadmill run and (200 mg every 3 hr postexercise up to 24 hours), …
Rn And Lpn Perceptions Of Front-Line Delegation, Martha E. Colwell
Rn And Lpn Perceptions Of Front-Line Delegation, Martha E. Colwell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Healthcare organizations face increasing demands to provide the most efficient and economical care possible. Emerging patient care delivery systems require that front-line RNs take on a broader scope of responsibility for patient care, particularly in the area of delegation. Research identifies that staff RNs experience much difficulty in delegating patient care (Conger, 1993; Hansten & Washburn, 1994). The purpose of this study was to explore RN and LPN perceptions of front-line delegation in their working relationships. In particular, the study sought to: (a) determine how changing roles of RNs and LPNs influenced front-line delegation; (b) answer how RNs viewed front-line …

Invisible Walls: Milliken V. Bradley And America's Urban Apartheid, Sonia E. Ingles
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In 1954 the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education ruling nullified the Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) doctrine of "separate but equal." At the time, a racially dysfunctional America looked to the South to observe the results of the Court's sweeping statement. Few realized that, carried to its logical conclusion, the decision would necessarily bring into question the racial practices of every part of the nation. To the dismay of Northerners, blacks began to challenge the unofficial system of segregation which existed outside of the South. The most controversial aspect of this challenge centered around school desegregation and busing. When …

Honor Among Thieves? Socio-Economic Theories Of Thorstein Veblen In The Plays Of David Mamet, Steven Allan Halverson
Honor Among Thieves? Socio-Economic Theories Of Thorstein Veblen In The Plays Of David Mamet, Steven Allan Halverson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Award-winning playwright David Mamet has acknowledged numerous times his indebtedness to the socio-economic theories of turn-of-the-century economist Thorstein Veblen, whom Mamet credits as influencing the motivation of the characters in several of his plays set in work-related environments.
Veblen, who was largely influenced by Darwin and Freud, declared that the economic institution of capitalism encourages an instinctive "predatory animus" in man to surface due to capitalism's encouragement of the ownership of private property. Veblen asserted that the desire for private property goes beyond one's essential physiological needs and is driven instead by the psychological drive to improve one's self-esteem and …

Dimensions Of Social Support: Cardiac Patients And Their Spouses, Nichole Louise Egbert
Dimensions Of Social Support: Cardiac Patients And Their Spouses, Nichole Louise Egbert
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Social support has been shown to benefit the recovery of cardiac patients on many levels. However, this general conclusion has not yet been conclusively defined regarding variables such as the role of gender in the provision and receipt of support and the specific effects of the marriage relationship on the healing process. Furthermore, researchers are still working on the best construct to describe and operationalize the various types and modes of social support for the cardiac patient. This study investigated how men as compared to women, and patients as compared to spouses reported the frequency and value of 4 different …
The Impact Of Ethnic Minorities Within Quebec Upon The Question Of Greater Sovereignty For The Province, Paul William Gausmann
The Impact Of Ethnic Minorities Within Quebec Upon The Question Of Greater Sovereignty For The Province, Paul William Gausmann
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
For the last several decades the Canadian province of Quebec has faced internal debate over whether or not it should achieve greater sovereignty from the rest of Canada. Since the 1960s a strong separatist movement has arisen within the province that has effectively instituted policies that increased the use of the French language in Quebec while restricting the use of English. Faced with the prospect of an independent or increasingly autonomous province dominated by a francophone majority, the three main ethnic groups in the province--the anglophones, allophones, and aboriginal peoples, have sought with varying degrees of unanimity and success to …
Selective Production Of Limonene During Pyrolytic Decomposition Of Polyisoprene, James Edward Haworth
Selective Production Of Limonene During Pyrolytic Decomposition Of Polyisoprene, James Edward Haworth
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Recycling of scrap tires has become an increasingly important environmental issue. In the United States alone, scrap tires generated has reached an amount of 2 million tons per year. Although these tires contain many useful and valuable products, approximately 70 % are disposed of in landfill sites, open dumps, or are stockpiled. Pyrolysis permits a method of separating the hydrocarbon oils, activated carbon, and high grade steel. Although current methods of pyrolysis permit the production of hydrocarbons such as limonene, the low yield of valuable compounds limits the economics of the process. Modeling the chemistry of pyrolysis using Fourier transform …

Japan And Southeast Asia: Conflict And Cooperation In Environmental Policymaking, Mika Itoh
Japan And Southeast Asia: Conflict And Cooperation In Environmental Policymaking, Mika Itoh
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
For a long period, it was strongly believed that industrialization was necessary for economic development, and little attention was paid to the possible effects of rapid industrialization on society and environment. Japan was not an exception for this regard. After the Second World War, Japan's economy developed very rapidly, however, this rapid economic growth didn't bring only good side of the story but also the bad side of story. While the quality of living standard was improved greatly due to its economic development, its environment suffered and many Japanese people have suffered from unexpected consequences. By the mid 1960s, Japan …

© Springer-Verlag 1996. Diffractive scattering of γ∗p → X + N, where N is either a proton or a nucleonic system with MN < 4 GeV has been measured in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at HERA. The cross section was determined by a novel method as a function of the γ∗p c.m. energy W between 60 and 245 GeV and of the mass MX of the system X up to 15 GeV at average Q2 values of 14 and 31 GeV2. The diffractive cross section dσdi f f /dMX is, within errors, found to rise linearly with W. Parameterizing the W dependence by the form dσdi f f /dMX ∞ (W2)(2αIP - 2) the DIS data yield for the pomeron trajectory αIP = 1.23±0.02(stat)±0.04(syst) averaged over t in the measured kinematic range assuming the longitudinal photon contribution to be zero. This value for the pomeron trajectory is substantially larger than αIP extracted from soft interactions. The value of αIP measured in this analysis suggests that a substantial part of the diffractive DIS cross section originates from processes which can be described by perturbative QCD. From the measured diffractive cross sections the diffractive structure function of the proton F2D(3) (β,Q2, xIP) has been determined, where β is the momentum fraction of the struck quark in the pomeron. The form F2D(3) = constant·(1/xIP)a gives a good fit to the data in all β and Q2 intervals with a = 1.46 ± 0.04(stat) ± 0.08(syst).

Validation Of The Reasons For Living Inventory-Ii (Rfl-Ii) In A College Sample, Monty T. Baker
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of a self-report measure designed to assess adolescent and young adult suicidal behavior. This measure, the Reasons for Living Inventory-II, was the revised version of the Adolescent Reasons for Living Inventory developed by Osman and Besett (1995). The final version of the RFL-II contained 32 items that loaded on five factors. The item loadings and coefficients alpha were high and satisfactory. Confirmatory factor-analytic procedures supported the fit of the five factor oblique model. Two groups were identified by using the Suicide Behavior Questionnaire item, "Have you ever thought about or …
