Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article explores the role of domestic courts, particularly in the United States, in enforcing international human rights norms and the challenges posed by sovereign immunity. It argues that U.S. courts should give greater effect to international legal norms, especially in cases involving human rights violations by foreign states. The analysis critiques the U.S. Supreme Court's narrow interpretation of the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA) in Saudi Arabia v. Nelson and advocates for a more expansive approach to ensure accountability for human rights abuses.

In earlier essays Henry Perritt, Marvin Anderson, Gary Bass and Patrice McDermott discuss the increasing use of computers to access information through the information superhighway, the Internet and online services, the increasing reliance on electronic formats by publishers and the federal government and the continuing debate about "information redlining." They indicate that information redlining is broader than just the availability and effects of technology and enhanced online services on lower income, minority and rural communities. Although much attention has been given to the importance of developing and using corporate and brand identity programs (from hereon essentially combined and referred to as CI), in the business literature in contrast academic treatment is less abundant and in particular there is little research on their actual implementation. Although medical examinations and samples taken from suspects' bodies in the course of police inquiries often lead to the discovery of important evidence, Singapore criminal procedure does not appear to empower the police to carry out such medical investigations. Neither does it safeguard the interests of suspects. It is submitted that the Criminal Procedure Code and other statutes should be brought up to date with modern science.

The electroweak mixing angle is determined with high precision from measurements of the mean difference between forward and backward hemisphere charges in hadronic decays of the Z. A data sample of 2.5 million hadronic Z decays recorded over the period 1990 to 1994 in the ALEPH detector at LEP is used. The mean charge separation between event hemispheres containing the original quark and antiquark is measured forbb¯bb¯ andcc¯cc¯ events in subsamples selected by their long lifetimes or using fastD*’s. The corresponding average charge separation for light quarks is measured in an inclusive sample from the anticorrelation between charges of opposite …

Olfactory receptor neurons present in two morphological sensillum types on the male Schistocerca gregaria antenna were for the first time investigated physiologically when stimulated with behaviourally relevant odours. Neurons present in trichoid/basiconic sensilla showed clear excitatory responses to compounds present in the male-produced aggregation pheromone and also to a plant produced compound. Sensilla could be categorised physiologically according to the responses of their receptor neurons to the tested stimuli. Also receptor neurons present in sensilla coeloconica responded to aggregation pheromone components, but always in an inhibitory fashion. Female Cotesia flavipes Cameron and Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) were attracted to odors in a Y-tube olfactometer from uninfested maize (Zea mays L.), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.)]. and napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach). In dual choice tests. Cotesia flavipes showed a preference for maize over sorghum, while maize and napier grass were equally attractive. In contrast, Cotesia sesamiae preferred volatiles from sorghum and napier grass over those from maize. The two parasitoids were significantly more attracted to maize infested with the stemborers, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), Chilo orichalcociliellus Strand, Sesamia calamistis Hampson, and Busseola fusca (Fuller), than uninfested maize. Congenital cardiac malformations are a serious health concern affecting the development of the fetal cardiovascular system. Identification of a fetus with abnormalities early in pregnancy, 10-20 weeks gestation, could assist in clinical diagnosis and be a great asset in health care. This thesis is a continuation of, and works in concert with, other research efforts conducted at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) aimed at characterizing fetal cardiovascular health through applied signal processing. Observing the opposition behavior of ingress-and-sting larval parasitoids of lepidopteran stemborers is difficult due to the cryptic feeding behavior of the hosts. A method for observing their opposition behavior was developed. An individual stemborer larva was introduced into a glass tube (0.7 cm in diameter; 7 cm in length) which contained a piece of maize stem (0.5-0.6 cm in diameter; 4-5 cm in length). The larva was allowed 14-20 h to feed on the maize and produce frass before introducing a single adult female parasitoid. The goal of this project was to investigate the effect of input-rate (oral and intravenous) and degree of exposure on the pharmacokinetics of ethanol and on subjective and objective measures of impairment, as well as on the development of acute tolerance to the effects of ethanol in young, healthy volunteers.

Recent evidence implicates anandamide as the endogenous ligand for the cannabinoid receptor. One purpose of this study was to determine the structural requirements for anandamide's receptor interaction and the influence of phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF), an enzyme inhibitor, on receptor affinity. A second objective was evaluation of the correlation between affinities of the analogs and in vivo pharmacological activities. The ability of anandamide and analogs to displace [3H]- CP 55,940 was determined by a filtration assay. Displacement curves for anandamide in the presence of PMSF produced a Ki of 89 ± 10 nM; without PMSF the Ki increased to 5400 ± …

Pediatric constipation can lead to various negative emotional and physical consequences including abdominal pain, painful defecation, toileting fears, anxiety about pain and intestinal dysfunction. In addition, constipation can lead to socially compromising and embarrassing situations due to associated overflow incontinence. These unpleasant physical and emotional symptoms may in tum lead to conditioned avoidance behaviors, which serve to further maintain the cycle of stool retention and constipation. Presently, there have not been any studies directly addressing the role of conditioned aversion in the etiology and maintenance of constipation.
