The decay of several yeast mRNAs occurs by a mechanism in which deadenylation precedes decapping and subsequent 5'-to-3' exonucleolytic decay. In order to identify gene products required for this process of mRNA turnover, we screened a library of temperature-sensitive strains for mutants with altered mRNA degradation. We identified seven mutations in four genes that inhibited mRNA turnover. Two mutations were alleles of the XRN1 5'-to-3' exoribonuclease known to degrade mRNAs following decapping. One mutation defined a new gene, termed DCP1, which in subsequent work was demonstrated to encode a decapping enzyme or a necessary component of a decapping complex. The …

In North America there are two generally recognized pathotypes (pathotypes 1 and 2) of the fungus Entomophaga grylli which show host-preferential infection of grasshopper subfamilies. Pathotype 3, discovered in Austra- lia,hasabroadergrasshopperhostrangeandwasconsidered to be a good biocontrol agent. Between 1989 and 1991 patho- type3wasintroducedattwofieldsitesinNorthDakota.Since resting spores are morphologically indistinguishable among pathotypes, we used pathotype-specific DNA probes to con- firm pathotype identification in E. grylli-infected grasshop- pers collected at the release sites in 1992, 1993, and 1994. Irrigation Timing Of Tree Landscape Shrub Species Based On Foliage Temperature, Roger Kjelgren

Changes in foliage temperature with vapour pressure deficit and water stress for three shrub species were investigated for use in irrigation scheduling in landscapes. Midday leaf-minus-air temperature (T1-Ta) and vapour pressure deficit were monitored seasonally for prostrate juniper (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Wiltonii’), upright juniper (J. chinensis ‘Hetzi’, and dwarf red-stem dogwood (Cornus sericea ‘Kelseyii’), positioned as isolated plants or in a massed setting. There was an inverse baseline relationship between T1-Taand vapour pressure deficit for all species and both spacings under well-watered conditions. This Note explores the “Draconian dilemma” an attorney faces when she is confronted by a client who discloses his HIV status and his on-going intimate sexual relations during contacts in furtherance of the legal representation. The Note examines the attorney's potential exposure to civil liability that might result from either disclosure or retention of confidence. It also outline sseveral avenues of legal claims that both third parties and clients might pursue in response to the attorney's actions. Although few plaintiffs have tested the viability of these causes of action, the Article considers whether third parties who are at risk would …

This essay begins with a brief discussion of the history of the dual banking system in Part I. Part II reviews the justifications for, and criticisms of, the dual banking system. Part III details the recent challenges to the dual banking system. Part IV looks to the future of the dual banking system and concludes that Congress has chosen not to preempt entirely the states' authority despite the continued erosion of states' authority over safety and soundness issues. This leaves the states with a continuing opportunity to serve as laboratories of innovation in bank regulation. If the states seize this …

This Article argues that the U.S. and EC views of the national security interests exceptions reflect competing conceptions of the WTO legal order. Under the first, the WTO is viewed as merely an agreement between states governing a limited issue area, the disciplining of protectionist policies, under which other issue areas are reserved to sovereign state decisionmaking or, alternatively, whatever other international institutions states have separately granted competence for management of the issue. Under this view, the United States might well argue that its Helms-Burton sanctions are outside the jurisdiction of the WTO and instead within the jurisdiction of the …

This Article demonstrates that the journal is a pedagogical tool worthy of more explicit attention by both clinical law teachers and non-clinical faculty alike. It introduces some of the literature on critical thinking and learning theory that supports the assignment of journals as an important tool in legal education; it provides a starting point for articulating pedagogical goals that can be met through journal assignments; and it alerts the first-time user to the challenges inherent in the use of journals in legal education.

Use Of Stems Of Emergent Plants For Oviposition By The Florida Applesnail, Pomacea Paludosa, And The Implications For Marsh Management, Richard L. Turner

This field study examined the distribution among emergent plant stems of egg clutches deposited by the amphibious Florida applesnail in four types of marsh in east central Florida. Clutch density was highest along the edge of sawgrass marsh and zero in deep marsh. Densities in maidencane and mixed shallow marshes were about one-third the density in sawgrass. In all marsh types, clutches occurred preferentially on plants having broad stems that generally exceeded 6 mm in diameter at water level. Substratum limitation for oviposition increased with the frequency of narrow-stemmed plants, but stem height was rarely limiting. The four marsh types …
