A mobile system is one where independently executing components may migrate through some space during the course of the computation, and where the pattern of connectivity among the components changes as they move in and out of proximity. Distributed multimedia applications supported by a global electronic infrastructure have tremendous potential for providing users with customized communication and computation environments. Since communication and computation requirements vary by context and change dynamically, it is unlikely that off-the-shelf applications will anticipate the needs of all users. Therefore, empowering end-users to create their own customized applications for both communication and computation is an important challenge. This dissertation presents several mechanisms that enable end-users to create and configure distributed multimedia applications, including end-users construction direct manipulation graphical users interface (GUIs) and application management of distributed multimedia applications over the Internet.

Leap Forward Virtual Clock: An O(Loglogn) Fair Queuing Scheme With Guaranteed Delays And Throughput Fairness, Subhash Suri, George Varghese, Girish P. Chandranmenon

We describe an efficient fair queuing scheme, Leap Forward Virtual Clock, that provides end-to-end delay bounds almost identical to that of PGPS fair queuing, along with throughput fairness. Our scheme can be implemented with a worst-case time O(loglogN) per packet guaranteed delay and throughput fairness. As its name suggests, our scheme is based on Zhang's virtual clock. While the original virtual clock scheme does not achieve throughput fairness, we can modify it with a simple leap forward mechanism that keeps the server clock from lagging too far behind the packet tags. This paper addresses the problem of topological design of ATM (and similar) communication networks. We formulate the problem from a worst-case point of view, seeking network desings that, subject to specified traffic constraints, are nonblocking for point-to-point and multicast virtual circuits. Within this model we give various conditions under which star networks are optimal or near-optimal. These conditions are approximately satisfied in many common situations making the results of practical significance. An important consequence of these results is that, where they apply, there is no added cost for nonblocking multicast communication, relative to networks that are nonblocking for point-to-point traffic …

This article begins by analyzing scholarly works which have addressed the role of a judge's personal values in the work of the judiciary. I will then attempt to identify where values clearly or arguably enter decisions, not because judges necessarily want them to but because the legal system compels it. In particular, I will explore that role not only in the more visible context of monumental appellate decisions, but also in the seemingly routine actions of every judge who sits on a bench. After teaching sports law for several years, I am struck that few people can articulate a coherent general thesis of what gender equity means or a clear vision of what the athletic picture will look like when it has been attained. The law of gender equity, however, is not so difficult to find. The Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (§ 1983) and Title IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended by the Education Amendments of 1972, are the major sources of American gender equity law. The presence of these pollutants in the industrial and agricultural wastewaters often represents a risk to the environment. Investigation of these species in the water is an important aspect of environmental pollution as human activities contributed to the progressive increase in the concentration of these compounds in the environmental as well as aquatic systems. This paper illustrates how popular music written, produced, and performed by Singaporeans provides a means through which the culture and society of Singapore may be understood. Music with English language text conveys a sense of place and reflects a distinctively Singaporean spirit and identity. Formalist critics and aestheticians have argued that music does not possess any kind of "extra-musical" significance, that there is no meaning beyond the form and structural relations of the notes. For them, music exemplifies the laws of mathematical harmony and proportion rather than the social and political contexts within which it is produced, reproduced and consumed. This view has been challenged by a number of social theorists: Max Weber, Theodor Adorno and Edward Said have all argued for an understanding of music within its social, cultural, economic and political contexts. Keeping pace with the changing face of Australian legal practice requires new approaches to teaching, both at university level and in professional training. This article considers the integration of adventure-based learning (ABL) approaches to meet new challenges in skills training. The discussion reviews the relevant literature and reports on a recent ethnographic study on the effectiveness of ABL techniques in the teaching of skills at tertiary level. Both the literature review and the ethnographic study indicate that ABL is an effective method for developing participants' skills. While we believe that the work of healing our cultural dyslexia is partly cognitive, in and through this paper we have tried to enact the experiential aspect. We may approach the entrances of the borderlands through reading and thinking, however we believe that the borderlands is a phenomenon of living, a phenomenon of well-intentioned people interacting in deliberate and thoughtful ways with those who are simultaneously like and unlike us/them. This paper explores the nexus between the cultural and the material by examining the ways in which religion and the economy are integrated in the context of economy-driven Singapore. The mutually constitutive relationships between the cultural and the material are explored through a discussion of the role of the state, capital and religious institutions in pulling together the sacred and the secular. Specifically, the analysis focuses on how the state harnesses religion ideologically in its economic development strategies; how capital harnesses the potential of religion in commercial enterprises in practical terms; and how religious institutions themselves behave as financial institutions. …

This paper examines the stability of deterministic steady-states with a one dimensional state-variable and a smooth, recursive updating rule. It is shown that the only possibly stable steady states are those associated with random walk beliefs, provided there is motion on a center manifold, which is the case when a key parameter is non-zero; In the extant literature, there is no motion on the center manifold (the parameter is zero), a consequence of the specific assumption that the expected value of the state variable next period determines its current value.
