Meniscus shapes from a simulation of a plate immersing into an infinitely deep liquid bath, for a range of outer length scales, have been obtained numerically. These have been compared with the leading‐order prediction from a three‐region asymptotic analysis done in the double limit, Capillary number, Ca→0, L_S/L_C→0, with Ca ln(L_C/L_S) of O(1), where L_S and L_C represent the slip length and an outer macroscopic length, respectively. For Ca<0.01, the numerically computed and the perturbation solutions show excellent agreement. Within this range of Ca, the meniscus slope at a distance 10L_S from the dynamic contact line is geometry independent, that is, does not vary with changes …

This research is concerned with the design of radial basis function neural networks to implement a controller for nonlinear systems. Nonlinear systems are of particular interest given the fact that most real life systems are nonlinear in nature and control schemes for such systems are not as developed as their linear counterparts and involves a lot of heuristics. We show the ability of radial basis function networks (RBF) to serve as a single unifying model incorporating both nonlinear and linear methodologies.

In a 1991 BYU Studies article, I identified and analyzed three core Book of Mormon passages in which the gospel or doctrine of Jesus Christ is defined. Each of these passages presents the gospel as a six-point formula or message about what men must do if they will be saved. In the present article I go on to examine all other Book of Mormon references to the six elements in this formula. Faith is choosing to trust in Jesus Christ in all that one does. Repentance is turning away from the life of sin by making a covenant to obey …

The addition of manipulators to small autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can pose significant control challenges due to hydrodynamic interactions between the arm and the vehicle. Experiments conducted at the monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) using the OTTER vehicle have shown that dynamical interactions between an arm and a vehicle can be very significant. For the experiments reported in this paper, a single-link "arm" was mounted on OTTER. Tests showed that for 90-degree, two-second repetitive slews of the arm, the vehicle would move as much as 18 degrees in roll and 14 degrees in yaw when no vehicle control was …

Much commentary about securities litigation shares the implicit premise that the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 (Reform Act) is, for better or worse, a fait accompli – that is, legislation whose meaning is fixed and whose impact, while still debatable, is not contingent on future events. This Article sees it differently: the Reform Act is more like wet clay that has been shaped into an approximation of a human form by an apprentice craftsmen and has now been turned over to the master sculptor for the details that will spell the difference between high art and merely competent …

Response Acquisition With Delayed Reinforcement In The Presence Of An Irrelevant Operandum., April Michele Williams

Rats and pigeons responded under schedules of delayed reinforcement in three experiments. Two operanda were available but only one was correlated with reinforcement. In Experiment 1, either operandum could be correlated with reinforcement depending on which was pressed first. Due to this procedure the source of reinforcement varied irregularly between sessions. In Experiment 2, the operandum correlated with reinforcement was pre-determined and remained consistent within conditions. In Experiment 3, the source of reinforcement was pre-determined and varied semi-randomly. Responses were acquired without prior response shaping in the first two experiments and maintained in all three using unsignalled, resetting delays to …
