Photobacterium damsela subsp. piscicida, formerly Pasteurella piscicida, is an important new pathogen of hybrid striped bass cultured in brackish water on Louisiana mariculture farms. Louisiana isolates compared with strains of P. damsela subsp. piscicida from Greece, Japan, Israel and Chesapeake Bay, USA and were found to be identical in biochemical phenotype and enzymic activity. Small plasmids of 8 and 5 kb were unique to Louisiana strains. Sequential daily bacteriology and histopathology on hybrid striped bass experimentally infected by immersion revealed that following high doses (13,000 CFU/ml) the gills and spleen are colonized first as early as 24 hours PI, followed …

King, and updated numerous times, The Sacred Harp books in the "Denson" tradition, including The Sacred Harp: 1991 Edition, are today the most popular and widely used twentieth-century revisions of any nineteenth-century tunebook. Sacred Harp singing has been a largely rural, Southern tradition and in the years between 1844 and the early 1970s several hundred separate singings were founded, many of which continue to be active. This study examined the relationship of individual student achievement with four variables--school social climate, race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Each of these variables was expected to be significantly related to student achievement. Student achievement was measured by the LEAP sores (averages of mathematics, language arts, and writing components of the test). School social climate was measured by the Brookover (1969) school social climate questionnaire. The primary goal of this dissertation is to investigate the structural and mechanical properties and dynamical fracture in SiSe$\sb2$ nanowires using the molecular-dynamics (MD) simulation technique. The present work is the first study of SiSe$\sb2$ nanowires. Large-scale simulations reported in this thesis are carried out with parallel multiresolution schemes for the long-range Coulomb and the three-body covalent potentials. The multiresolution scheme reduces the computational complexity from O(N$\sp2$) to O(N). Using an effective interatomic potential containing both 2- and 3-body interactions, MD simulations are performed for SiSe$\sb2$ nanowires composed of finite (1-64) number of chains. Cytokines play an important role in regulation of T cell responses. Two T helper cell subsets have been identified in some species and are defined by their cytokine secretion profiles. Th1 cells produce IL-2 and IFN-$\gamma,$ whereas Th2 cells express IL-4, IL-5, and IL-10. Precursor T cells that express a mixture of these cytokines are considered Th0 cells. It is hypothesized that primary infections of Brugia pahangi in gerbils induce an initial Th0 or Th1 like response which with time becomes a Th2 like response. The host systemic and peritoneal inflammatory responses against different stages of Brugia pahangi were compared in intraperitoneally infected-jirds. Systemic inflammatory responses were assessed by measuring the pulmonary granulomatous response to B. pahangi antigen-coated beads (PGRN). Peritoneal inflammation was characterized by enumeration of different cell types in peritoneal exudates following infection. Further, the toxoplasmacidal activity and TNF-$\alpha$-like production of peritoneal macrophages were also characterized. Infection with L3, L4, male worms, female worms, microfilariae (MF) or dead adult worms induced a rapid PGRN. This response decreased to levels of controls in jirds inoculated with living parasites at the chronic time period, indicating …

This history, written from a feminist perspective, uses historical materials which trace unusual social and educational experiments in Fairhope, Alabama, in the early twentieth century. The early development of the utopian Fairhope community, founded by E. B. Gaston and a group of like-minded midwestern social reformers, is reviewed. Gaston's resolve to alleviate the worst inequities of monopolistic capitalism through practicing the single tax principles of Henry George is placed in historical context. Several studies have found a direct link between lack of activity and obesity. Purpose. Numerical experiments were undertaken to understand (1) heat and fluid transport in an uplifted foreland basin where fluid flow is driven by topographic gradient, and (2) effects of expulsion of geopressured fluids on the thermodynamic system in salt basins. Thermal evolution of an uplifted foreland basin is strongly affected by thermal buffering of basement rocks. Thermal buffering by basement rocks does not permit constant heat flow along the sediment-basement contact, in contrast to many previous numerical studies. Ignoring basement effects can result in serious errors in temperature prediction, such as a false transient thermal pulse in the discharge area. Carbonaceous …

The first objective of this research was to develop a decondensation treatment for bovine spermatozoal DNA that worked consistently across bulls and breeds. The second objective was to use the decondensed DNA for polymerase chain reaction analysis of levels of Y-bearing spermatozoa in different ejaculates and in sex sorted spermatozoa. Decondensation of spermatozoa with dithiothreitol and potassium hydroxide was compatible with in vitro amplification and did not inhibit amplification. The polymerase chain reaction and image analysis were used to differentiate between proportions of Y spermatozoa by measuring fluorescent intensities of electrophoresed, polymerase chain reaction-amplified DNA. The physical and chemical nonequilibrium transport of alachlor were studied in a surface Gigger soil from different tillages through tracer studies, and batch and miscible displacement experiments. Batch experiments indicated initially fast reaction followed by slow adsorption. Adsorption and desorption results indicated time dependent hysteretic behavior and was best described by a multireaction model incorporating nonlinear equilibrium reaction, a reversible kinetic mechanism, and a consecutive irreversible mechanism. The model predicted alachlor hysteresis and adsorption-desorption kinetics satisfactorily based on parameters obtained from adsorption experiments. A system reacting to its environment requires sensor input to model the environment. Unfortunately, sensors are electromechanical devices subject to physical limitations. It is challenging for a system to robustly evaluate sensor data which is of questionable accuracy and dependability. Sensor fusion addresses this problem by taking inputs from several sensors and merging the individual sensor readings into a single logical reading. Environmental policy in the United States is increasingly relying on incentive-based mechanisms (IBM). Incentive-based mechanisms, are voluntary environmental management instruments based on free market environmentalism, a framework that attempts to harness market forces. A multi-disciplinary approach was developed to evaluate participation decisions in IBM's such as the Wetland Reserve Program. This approach extended the traditional utility maximization approach to choice behavior by including alternative measures of environmental attitudes based on the theory of reasoned action or the New Environmental Paradigm. The experimental technique of measuring the degree of polarization of the fluorescence from electronically excited molecular ions is used to determine the alignment of N$\sb2$, CO and N$\sb2$O photoions over an extended range of excitation energy. The polarization of $\rm CO\sp+(B\sp2\Sigma\sp+\to\ X\sp2\Sigma\sp+),\ N\sb2\sp+(B\sp2\Sigma\sb{u}\sp+\ \to \ X\sp2\Sigma\sb{g}\sp+)$, and $\rm N\sb2O\sp+\ (A\sp2\Sigma\sp+\ \to\ X\sp2\Pi)$ fluorescence over a 200 eV photon energy range is used to interpret the oscillator strength distributions for normally unresolved degenerate ionization channels. The results show the influence of a CO $4\sigma\to k\sigma$ shape resonance clearly, and agreement between theory and experiment is excellent. The N$\sb2$O experimental results indicate …

Despite accumulating evidence, unresolved issues remain as to how the components of strategy, top-management characteristics, and environment, as independent variables, combine to affect a firm's success or failure in turning around declining performance. To address such issues, this dissertation developed and tested a series of hypotheses that investigates the effects of strategy, top-management characteristics, and environment on performance. Findings show that turnaround strategy alone is insufficient to explain differences in performance among firms. Slow-to-Recover (STR) individuals are a subset of the neurologically impaired population who remain non-responsive for extended periods of time before beginning to demonstrate improvement in cognitive, communicative, or motor function. This investigation focuses on the development and implementation of a facilitator-based intervention program carried out with an STR brain injured adult residing in a long-term care facility. Many sectors of the United States economy have experienced deregulation during the 1970s and 1980s. This study examines how deregulation affects the informativeness of accounting earnings of firms in deregulation industries. In this study, the informativeness of accounting earnings is measured by the earnings response coefficient (ERC, the slope coefficient in the regression of abnormal stock returns on unexpected accounting earnings). This dissertation consists of three essays on vector autoregressive (VAR) models. The first examines lag selection criteria. Typically, in VAR models all variables have the same lag length in each equation. Hsiao (1981) and Keating (1994) suggest two ways to estimate asymmetric lag structures. In a Monte-Carlo framework, we simulate eight prespecified VAR models and observe how the lag specification methods perform. We also look at the impulse response and forecast performances of these lag selection methods. We find that the AIC criterion performs better in finite samples than the SIC criterion, and Keating's method is superior to Hsiao's method. …

Measurements have been made of the drag on a thin disk of diameter d moving broadside through a liquid of viscosity $\mu$ and density $\rho$. The liquid is bounded on the outside by a cylindrical tube, diameter D, which is coaxial with the disk. The geometrical parameter $\xi$ = d/D ranges from 0.0189 to 0.112. The Reynolds number Re = $\rho$Ud/$\mu$ ranges from 0.0167 to 6.89. When the measured values are extrapolated to Re = 0, the results agree with the calculations of Shail and Norton. When extrapolated to $\xi$ = 0, the results agree with the matched-asymptotic series solution …
