Self-help is a largely neglected topic in American legal studies.1 With the exception of a survey by a group of law students published a dozen years ago,2 there appears to be little, if anything, in our legal literature that confronts the subject in a systematic way.3 This is so, at least, if one defines self-help as I do. To me, the term refers to any act of bypassing the formal legal system in order to get what one wants.

Although subsidiaries play a significant role in our economy, surprisingly little has been written about the duties of their directors. Despite widespread acceptance of holding companies as commonplace business entities, several legal problems inherent in the holding company form of ownership remain unresolved. Holding companies raise legal dilemmas for subsidiary directors that are easier to ignore than to resolve. This Article examines the subsidiary director's dilemma and demonstrates that traditional models of corporate structure are not adequate for the subsidiary-parent situation. A large number of studies have shown that excessive fat intake, inadequate dietary fiber, and inadequate consumption of certain micronutrients, such as vitamin A, are associated with higher rates of cancers. Studies of Americans' consumption patterns have revealed excessive fat intake, inadequate dietary fiber, and inadequate consumption of certain micronutrients. Adults, adolescents, and children exhibit patterns of underconsumption of important nutrients. This study tested a three-component--classroom, parent, cafeteria--intervention for fourth graders. It included learning experiences that targeted Social Cognitive Theory constructs and provided skills training and practice. As adequate fruit and vegetable consumption appears to offer benefits for cancer prevention, dietary improvements are an important method of risk reduction. Children often exhibit inadequate consumption and, thus, appear to be promising targets for dietary change because of potential long-term benefits. Research is needed to identify variables that influence fruit and vegetable consumption, including cultural, psychosocial, economic, and situational factors. Only a few such models are available, and most lack the specificity required for testing. Among the theories of health behavior. Wet weather water quality of the Blackstone River was analyzed. Three wet weather events were successfully captured for the wet weather program: Storm 1 (September 22-24, 1992), Storm 2 (November 2-5, 1992) and Storm 3 (October 12-14, 1993). Grab samples were collected at specific time intervals throughout the Blackstone River watershed. The concentrations and EMC's (event mean concentration) for different constituents were determined. Two types of violations were compared for fecal coliform in the Blackstone River: log mean > 200 md/100 ml and 10% of samples exceeding 400 md/100 ml. The purpose of this thesis is to address the challenges of validating simulation models, especially those challenges facing military simulation analysts. Three distinct issues are of concern to the military simulation analyst: (1) What type of validation effort do the academic experts recommend? (2) What does the military policy say is necessary for a proper validation effort? (3) What can a simulation practitioner realistically accomplish given time and resource constraints? According to Kimball Young, "My five quarters at Chicago fixed me for life." This account of Kimball YOung's career begins with his experience at the University of Chicago where he obtained an A.M. in 1918. These early experiences with the founders of the Chicago School had a lasting impact on his career in sociology. Young's memoirs focus on his relationships with his mentors, colleagues and students at Chicago and at the subsequent colleges and universities with which he worked. This oral history offers remarkable insights into the lives of scholars who shaped sociology in the first two-thirds of the century.

Methazolamide For Essential Voice Tremor, Christopher Dromey, Karen Busenbark, L Ramig, William C. Koller

We studied the safety and efficacy of methazolamide (average dose 168 mg/day) in a placebo-controlled blinded investigation in nine patients with essential voice tremor. There were no significant differences for physician or patient clinical rating scores. Digital audio tape recordings showed no difference for amplitude modulation, but frequency modulation was significantly altered by methazolamide. Side effects were common with the drug. We conclude that methazolamide has limited usefulness in the treatment of essential voice tremor.

Conversion Of Coal Tar To Soot During Coal Pyrolysis In A Post-Flame Environment, Thomas H. Fletcher, Jinliang Ma, Brent W. Webb

Coal pyrolysis experiments were performed in the postflame region of a CH4/H2/air flat-flame burner operating under fuel-rich conditions, where the temperature and gas compositions were similar to those in the near-burner region of a large-scale coal-fired furnace. Volatiles released from the coal particles formed a cloud of soot particles at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. The soot particles in the cloud were collected at different residence times using a water-cooled, nitrogen-quenched suction probe. Test variables included the reaction temperature and coal type. Soot yields in terms of weight percentage of dry ash-free coal were measured based on bulk …

Three coals of different rank were pyrolyzed in a drop-tube reactor at a maximum temperature of 900 K and a residence time of 160 ms. The coal and char were analyzed with solid-state 13C NMR. The tar was dissolved in deuterated methylene chloride. It was found that the tar was only partially soluble in CD2Cl2. The nonsoluble tar portion was analyzed in the same manner as the coal and char, while the soluble tar portion was analyzed using a recently developed high-resolution 13CNMRtechnique developed for liquid phases. An investigation of a global reburning-NO reaction, sum(CiHj) + NO => HCN + . . ., which is a reduction pathway of nitric oxide (NO) by reaction with gaseous hydrocarbons, was conducted. The global reburning-NO rate expression was deduced from a combination of elemental reactions. The global rate expression and its rate constants were then determined by correlating predicted species profiles from simple hydrocarbon flames. This global reburning-NO rate constant can be expressed as 2.7x106 exp(-18,800/RT) (gmol/cm3 s). This expression and constants are applicable to atmospheric pressure with an equivalence ratio range of 1.0-2.08 …

Global chemical reaction rates used in the modeling of NOx formation in comprehensive combustion codes have traditionally been obtained through correlation of experimental data. In this paper, a computational approach for obtaining global rates is presented. Several premixed flames were simulated, and sensitivity analysis of species concentration profiles was used to suggest global pathways in fuel-nitrogen conversion to NO. Based on these analyses, the global reaction rates were formulated. The predicted species concentration profiles and their derivatives were then used in the determination of the global rate constants. The main objective of this work was to determine the effects of pyrolysis heating rate on intrinsic O2 reactivity of coal chars. Relationships of intrinsic reactivity to other pyrolysis conditions and char physical and chemical structure were also investigated, and empirical correlations were obtained. Two different entrained flow reactors (a flat flame methane/air burner and a drop tube reactor) were used to prepare chars under a variety of different pyrolysis conditions at maximum particle temperatures and heating rates of 840-1627 K and 104 to 2x105 K/s, respectively. This study has led to an improved understanding of the active tectonics and seismic hazards of the northeastern Mojave Desert region and has provided a means with which to assess regional strain models proposed by previous workers. Primary data sets include published and unpublished geologic maps, Landsat Thematic Mapper multi-spectral imagery, SPOT panchromatic imagery as well as hand-held ground and aerial photographs (panchromatic, color and color-infrared), color video, digital topography, gravity, seismicity and paleomagnetic data. Prior to analysis, data sets were organized into a geographic information system implemented on a UNIX workstation. This allowed for the simultaneous visualization of combinations …

One of the most critical aspects in the design of oil and gas wells is the selection of the depths at which steel casing is set. As the length of open borehole increases, the risk of formation fracturing during drilling operations increases. Formation fracture often leads to an underground blowout that can be very expensive to control. Because of the special problems involved in drilling deepwater well, accurately measuring the risk of formation fracture is essential. Holocene To Late Pleistocene Stratigraphy Of The Mahakam Delta, Kalimantan, Indonesia., Johan C. Sydow

Late Pleistocene depositional cycles of the Mahakam shelf contain stratal geometries that indicate a progradational continuum, from falling stage in sea level through to initial rise. These findings contrast with popular sequence stratigraphic concepts which predict that large, rapid sea-level falls, typical of the Late Pleistocene, should result in sediment bypass of the entire shelf. The Mahakam shelf is a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate depositional setting. Extensive, thick carbonate buildups are produced by prolific green algal Halimeda bioherm accretion during transgression and highstand flooding of the shelf. Insecticide toxicity to hemipteran predators (i.e. Geocoris punctipes (Say), Nabis capsiformis Germar, Nabis roseipennis Reuter, and Podisus maculiventris (Say)) was evaluated using three different routes of insecticide exposure (direct contact, indirect insecticide toxicity through consumption of treated prey, and residue uptake). Pirate 3SC$\sp\circler$ (chlorfenapyr) had direct contact toxicity equal to Ambush 2E$\sp\circler$ (permethrin) and Methyl Parathion 4E$\sp\circler$ to most hemipteran predators tested. Exposure to foliage treated with Proclaim 0.16E$\sp\circler$ (emamectin benzoate) usually resulted in lower mortality as compared to Pirate. Condor OF 100F$\sp\circler$ (Bacillus thuringiensis) had the lowest contact toxicity to hemipteran predators of all insecticides tested. Pirate at 0.224 …

Historical route geographers consider the factors that influenced past roadbuilding, and the changes that result from roadbuilding. The earliest Spanish colonial officials in Central America initiated roadbuilding projects that were sensitive to physical and cultural factors. Officials had to consider the region's aboriginal routes, Spain's trade flows, the isthmus' topography, and the region's population distribution. The roads the Spaniards opened four centuries ago guided early settlement. In some cases, these early roads persist in the region's route network. During the 16th-century Spaniards sought to establish transisthmian roadways that would link Spain's Atlantic and Pacific maritime networks. Partial fluvial routes across …

Distributed memory parallel computers offer enormous computation power, scalability and flexibility. However, these machines are difficult to program and this limits their widespread use. An important characteristic of these machines is the difference in the access time for data in local versus non-local memory; non-local memory accesses are much slower than local memory accesses. In Rhodobacter capsulatus, a purple nonsulfur bacterium, the tetrapyrrole pathway yields four end products: siroheme, vitamin B12, heme and bacteriochlorophyll. Growth of R. capsulatus under low oxygen tension increases carbon flow through the tetrapyrrole pathway up to 100 fold. The mechanism(s) for this regulation is currently unknown. One regulatory mechanism could be transcriptional control of one or more of the genes in the common portion of the tetrapyrrole pathway. The fifth gene in the pathway, hemE, has been cloned by complementation of an Escherichia coli hemE::miniTn10 mutant. Sequence data of hemE revealed the presence of an upstream palindrome that is …

Photobacterium damsela subsp. piscicida, formerly Pasteurella piscicida, is an important new pathogen of hybrid striped bass cultured in brackish water on Louisiana mariculture farms. Louisiana isolates compared with strains of P. damsela subsp. piscicida from Greece, Japan, Israel and Chesapeake Bay, USA and were found to be identical in biochemical phenotype and enzymic activity. Small plasmids of 8 and 5 kb were unique to Louisiana strains. Sequential daily bacteriology and histopathology on hybrid striped bass experimentally infected by immersion revealed that following high doses (13,000 CFU/ml) the gills and spleen are colonized first as early as 24 hours PI, followed …
