Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by reversible airway obstruction and nonspecific airway hyperreactivity. Recent evidence suggests that inflammation is a critical feature in the pathogenesis of asthma. Central to the genesis of inflammation is the presentation of antigens to T lymphocytes. Dendritic cells (DC) are antigen presenting cells that activate T lymphocytes thought to play a critical role in stimulating antigen-induced airway inflammation and hyperreactivity in asthma. The qualitative interview was used to investigate the students perception about their community college experience. The interview yielded data related to the students motivations for attending and persisting in higher education. High altitude operation of internal combustion engines requires multiple stages of turbo-compression to maintain sea level density at the engine intake to maintain rated power. Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation has selected a set of automotive turbo-compressor components for the Rotax engine chosen for high altitude performance of the Theseus aircraft. Prior to construction and testing, Aurora predicted the system performance by power and RPM matching, using factory component performance data in the form of a spreadsheet. I extend the price adjustment cost model to the open economy. To study price variations in response to exchange rate fluctuations, I develop a dynamic model for exporting firms that face convex cost in the adjustment of their prices for the export destination countries. The theoretical findings are that it is optimal for firms not to change their existing prices immediately after a change in exchange rate. The speed of price adjustment is found to depend on discount rate, slope of the demand curve, and cost of price adjustment, while the volatility of the exchange rate has no effect on …

The purpose of this study was to investigate gender equity in medical coverage and injury prevention of basketball programs at NCAA Division I colleges and universities. The population for this study were 100 randomly sampled head athletic trainers at NCAA Division I colleges and universities that compete in both men's and women's basketball. Each participant was mailed a survey packet containing a cover letter and a questionnaire. The total return rate was 69%. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Analysis Systems. In this study, the Transit Automata (TA) model, a Cellular Automata (CA) based spatial model, has been developed. It includes a set of cells, states, rules, events, and a system clock. In contrast to CA, a TA model fragments the problem space along restricted routes. All cells on the routes are treated as equal and controlled by rules. Like CA models, an initial configuration of a TA model can be embedded and can be dynamically changed during the runtime. Human exposure to silica is of great occupational concern as it is marked by pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. The present work was performed to investigate, characterize, and modulate the responses that occur as a result of silica exposure. The intratracheal instillation of silica to rats results in pulmonary fibrosis but the cellular processes involved in the development of the chronic disease have not been well characterized. The hypothesis of this study was that pharmacological intervention early in the silica-induced inflammatory cascade will attenuate fibrosis development. Selenium is a nutritionally essential trace element for mammals, and several studies have suggested that selenium may have an important function in the central nervous system. We hypothesized that selenium may play an important role in the differentiation of myelin producing cells, i.e., oligodendrocytes in developing brain. We employed an in vitro model system of glial cell cultures prepared from newborn rat brains to test this hypothesis. Part I analyzes the conduct of corporations, describes examples of corporations' involvement in human rights violations, and discusses the merits of greater responsibility of corporations. Editor's Note: Lynn H. Turner and Helen Sterk examine one small part of the Designing Women script, a short speech by Anthony (one of the series' regulars). They argue that, as the only African American male in the series, Anthony was in a unique position to examine the gender and race issues posed by the Thomas/Hill hearings, and by the Thomas nomination itself. Calling on writings by African .American scholars commenting on the Senate hearings and on race and gender issues generally, the authors conclude that the structure of Anthony's speech represents a missed opportunity.

Research on the patterns and behavioral consequences of kin networks among the older population is limited due to the shortcomings of most available survey data. Often, household surveys obtain little information on the number and characteristics of nonresident kin. Moreover, surveys are often confined to the noninstitutionalized population. Qualitative (Scheibe!, 1992) and quantitative (Jacobs & Scheibel, 1993) research indicates a general decline in dendritic neuropil with increasing age. The present study extends previous human dendritic research by examining quantitatively age-related changes in 2 cortical areas: prefrontal cortex (area 10) and occipital cortex (area 18). Tissue blocks were obtained from the left hemisphere of 10 neurologically normal subjects, ranging in age from 23 to 81 years. Blocks were stained with a modified rapid Golgi technique. Supragranular pyramidal cells were quantified on a Neurolucida computer/microscope interface system (Microbrightfield, Inc.). Participants separated 200 colored beads by color while they listened to Preludium in E major played at 208 beats per minute, Air from orchestra suite No.3 played at 58 beats per minute, or music. A growing body o f cognitive research indicates that there is likely to be a cognitive basis for the onset, development, and maintenance of phobias. This possibility is examined relative to the potential for phobias to disrupt normal cognitive processing. Both the behavioral and cognitive approaches to the understanding and treatment o f phobias are explored. Past research concerning the mother-daughter relationship and eating disorders provided compelling evidence that such a relationship exists. This study used Baumrind's three styles of parenting: authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive (Buri, 1991; Benokraitus, 1993). Sixty female college students, ages 18 to 22, were assessed using Buri's (1991) Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), and assigned to groups, either authoritative, authoritarian, or permissive, depending on their mothers' parent- ing styles. The Eating Disorder Questionnaire (EDQ; Little, Lindow-Cook, Tolliver, & Sise, 1996) was administered to all groups.
