Thermoregulation And Rate Of Body Warming During Warm Water (40℃) Immersion In Female Children And Adults, Malcolm B. Doupe, Glen P. Kenny, Matthew D. White, Gordon D. Giesbrecht

Visions in Leisure and Business

Resort operators often do not allow children to use hot tubs/whirlpools because of the general belief that children cannot tolerate even a short exposure to warm water (40℃). This belief is based on body size characteristics and under developed thermoregulatory responses of children. Therefore, we measured anthropometric, thermoregulatory, and immersion time required to increase core temperature at 38.5℃, on 14 female subjects (7-23 years). All subjects tolerated 10 minutes of immersion safely, but indicated they would have voluntarily exited the water earlier. Warming rates were somewhat related to body type, but did not depend on age. Healthy female children ( …

Judicial Review Of Cercla Cleanup Procedures: Striking A Balance To Prevent Irreparable Harm, Lucia A. Silecchia

Scholarly Articles

When Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (“CERCLA”) in 1980 in response to the problems of toxic waste and hazardous substances, the central goals of the Act were clear. Accordingly, CERCLA included provisions for establishing liability for the costs of cleaning up hazardous waste sites. Congress also created the Superfund to pay for those …

Our Hearts Were Once Young And Gay: Health Care Rationing And The Elderly, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1996

Our Hearts Were Once Young And Gay: Health Care Rationing And The Elderly, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Although there exists no rigid guideline delineating society's obligation to provide health care, at a minimum Americans are entitled to an adequate level of care without excessive burdens being placed upon them. Fulfilling this ostensibly simple mandate, however, presents an enormous challenge. The need to allocate limited financial and human resources increasingly clashes with the moral desire to provide health care resources to elder Americans beyond their years of economic productivity. As a result, health care professionals face the difficult task of weighing against society's other priorities the efficiency of distributing limited health care resources to the elderly. This demand …

The Gatt And The Environment: Irreconcilable Differences?, John Bogardus Jan 1996

The Gatt And The Environment: Irreconcilable Differences?, John Bogardus

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) has governed the trading rules between its contracting parties since its inception in 1947. The Final Act Embodying the Results of the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations was signed in Marrakesh on April 15, 1994. The Final Act called for the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) which came into being on January 1, 1995. The raison d'être of the WTO is to eliminate barriers of any sort that have an adverse impact upon trade between WTO contracting parties. Environmental leaders are concerned that an effective technique for promoting environmental …
