Institutional Climate And Institutional Effectiveness At Three Community Colleges, Connie S. Buckner Dec 1996

Institutional Climate And Institutional Effectiveness At Three Community Colleges, Connie S. Buckner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to explore the impact of employee morale, as manifested in institutional climate data, upon institutional effectiveness; and (2) to determine the extent to which information generated by climate survey data was used in developing and implementing change initiatives at each of the institutions studied. Three institutions were selected for this multiple site case study. Four sources of data from each institution were used to provide a "picture" of institutional climate. These sources of data were (a) the Personal Assessment of the College Environment (PACE) climate survey, (b) institutional self-study reports, (c) reaffirmation …

Articulation Practices Of Two- And Four-Year Public Colleges In Tennessee, Amy L. Freeman Dec 1996

Articulation Practices Of Two- And Four-Year Public Colleges In Tennessee, Amy L. Freeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study had two purposes. The first was to identify present articulation practices within Tennessee public colleges. The second was to select recommendations for ideal articulation practice that might lead to improved transfer/articulation among two- and four-year public colleges in Tennessee. A survey instrument was sent to persons identified as chief articulation officers within Tennessee public colleges. They were asked to evaluate identified articulation practices according to present practice and according to ideal practice. Results were used to determine which transfer and articulation practices were currently used in Tennessee public colleges, which transfer and articulation practices ideally should be used …

Efficient Parallel Algorithms On Reconfigurable Mesh Architectures, His-Chieh Lee, Fikret Ercal Dec 1996

Efficient Parallel Algorithms On Reconfigurable Mesh Architectures, His-Chieh Lee, Fikret Ercal

Computer Science Technical Reports

This dissertation describes a number of novel parallel algorithms for solving maze-routing problems and string matching problems on a proposed reconfigurable mesh architecture.

Section I reviews the field of reconfigurable parallel computing. This includes an introduction to a number of reconfigurable architectures proposed in the literature and a list of references to the current literature on algorithms in the field of reconfigurable computing.

Section II presents a number of time-efficient algorithms to solve the mazerouting problem. Maze-routing algorithms are used in VLSI routing and robot path planning. In that section, definitions for absolute shortest path (ASP), shortest duplex-path (SDP), shortest …

Parallel Fast Multipole Algorithms For N-Body Simulations, Jui-Lin Lu, Daniel Okunbor

Computer Science Technical Reports

The computer simulation of N-Body problems has a wide range of applications. It is known that simulations can take years to complete. This can be greatly improved by using efficient algorithms in force calculations and in applying the computing power of parallel computers to the problem. A tremendous amount of work has been devoted to parallelization of the fast multipole algorithm (FMA) which is one of the fastest algorithms in force calculations. However, most parallel implementations target a specific machine. We developed an efficient communication scheme for parallel FMA in a message passing environment and implemented it by using Message …

Researching Organisational Change And Learning: A Narrative Approach, Carl Rhodes Dec 1996

Researching Organisational Change And Learning: A Narrative Approach, Carl Rhodes

The Qualitative Report

This paper explores a qualitative research approach to organisational change and learning based on the gathering and reporting of stories. Particular emphasis is placed on reporting research findings in the "voices" of the organisational actors involved in the research. The paper starts by identifying learning, socialisation and diversity as a context for research and goes on to examine the power relations implicit in organisational learning. A pluralistic approach to the use of storytelling in organisational analysis is discussed and a research process is described. Issues of how research findings are represented are examined as are some unresolved and potentially unresolvable …

Nuclear Pariahs And Regimes In The New World Disorder, Wayne F. Lesperance Jr. Dec 1996

Nuclear Pariahs And Regimes In The New World Disorder, Wayne F. Lesperance Jr.

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This thesis discusses the role of pariah states vis-a-vis the nonproliferation regime. Specifically, the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) is analyzed to determine, first, whether Iran is a pariah, second, the potential threat the IRI poses to the Persian Gulf region and third, the possible international responses that may be undertaken to address Iranian pariahtude in the nuclear field. Through the course of this thesis regimes are defined as a set of implicit and explicit rules, principles, norms, and decision-making procedures around which actor's expectations converge and which govern relations among states. Pariahs are defined as …

Subregional Planning In The San Francisco Bay Area: Tri-Valley Subregional Planning Strategy, Hing Wong Dec 1996

Subregional Planning In The San Francisco Bay Area: Tri-Valley Subregional Planning Strategy, Hing Wong

Master's Projects

Many people in the San Francisco Bay Area have noticed that their quality of life has deteriorated in recent years. Citizens are becoming increasingly aware of problems such as traffic congestion; cost and supply of housing; loss of open space and agricultural land; environmental concerns; deterioration of infrastructure; and economic uncertainties.

All of these problems have significant effects on the physical and social welfare of our communities. Many of them are interrelated, and the result of haphazard regional growth patterns. The real dilemma is not that these conditions exist, but that they are largely unresolvable by our present structure of …
