How Effective Is The Level Of Fair Market Rent In Overcoming Barriers To Residential Mobility For The Section 8 Existing Housing Program?, Frank L. Guido

Master's Projects

Ultimately this report will try to draw conclusions regarding the effects of the Fair Market Rent {FMR) level on the settlement pattern of Section 8 Households in Santa Clara County by examining that settlement pattern. Settlement pattern refers to the counts of Section 8 Households by census tract within the County. FMR refers to the maximum gross rent (rent plus utilities) for which a home of a given bedroom size can be rented by a tenant household assisted with a certificate in the Section 8 Housing Allowance Program of the U.S. Housing Act of 1937 as amended in 1974. Detection For A Statistically-Known, Time-Varying Dispersive Channel, David W. Matolak, S. G. Wilson Dec 1996

Detection For A Statistically-Known, Time-Varying Dispersive Channel, David W. Matolak, S. G. Wilson

Faculty Publications

Detection for the statistically known channel (SKC) is aimed at obtaining good performance in situations where our statistical knowledge of a time-varying channel is good, and where other equalization/detection schemes are either too complex to implement, or their performance is limited due to the rapidity of channel fading, or where we are simply unable to perform channel estimation. By using a statistical characterization of the channel, we develop a new detector that performs maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) (given the channel model) on blocks of N symbols. Both symbol-spaced and fractionally spaced samples are used, to obtain two different detectors, that …

The Asean Regional Forum: Asian Security Without An American Umbrella, Larry M. Wortzel Dr. Dec 1996

The Asean Regional Forum: Asian Security Without An American Umbrella, Larry M. Wortzel Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

U.S. Asian policy today is a curious blend of seemingly firm bilateral commitments and occasionally startling ambiguities. The latter, while preserving American flexibility, run the risk of signaling weakness when friends and potential adversaries probe for clarity of purpose. This American "inscrutability" in Asia is all the more troubling in a region lacking a strong web of multilateral institutions, as exists across the North Atlantic. Indeed, if the United States is to maintain regional stability in Asia, Colonel Larry Wortzel, the U.S. Army attaché in Beijing, argues, it must make multilateral dialogues like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Regional …

Review Of The Truth About The Virgin: Sex And Ritual In The Dead Sea Scrolls By Ita Sheres And Anne Kohn Blau, Sidnie White Crawford Dec 1996

Review Of The Truth About The Virgin: Sex And Ritual In The Dead Sea Scrolls By Ita Sheres And Anne Kohn Blau, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

A book about gender in the Dead Sea Scrolls is long overdue. For many years, the scholarly consensus that Qumran (where the scrolls were found) was inhabited by an isolated Jewish sect of celibate “monks” made the subject of gender, peripheral at best. With that consensus increasingly called into question, more writers are discovering material about women in the scrolls (see, for example, the excellent work of Eileen Schuller). A book that brings this material together is therefore very desirable. Unfortunately, this is not the book.

Diffuse Energy Propagation On Heterogeneous Plates: Structural Acoustics Radiative Transfer Theory, Joseph A. Turner, Richard L. Weaver Dec 1996

Diffuse Energy Propagation On Heterogeneous Plates: Structural Acoustics Radiative Transfer Theory, Joseph A. Turner, Richard L. Weaver

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

The propagation of diffuse energy on an unwetted flat plate with attached heterogeneities is examined using a statistical, multiple scattering approach. The statistically homogeneous heterogeneities lightly couple the membrane and flexural waves. The problem is formulated in terms of the Bethe–Salpeter equation, which governs the field covariance. It is reduced to a radiative transfer equation in the limit that the attenuations per wave number are small, i.e., when the heterogeneities are weak. This radiative transfer equation governs the diffuse energy propagation as a function of space, time, and propagation direction. Solutions of the radiative transfer equation are presented for the …

About The Cellular Tropism Of The Gammaherpesvirus Bovine Herpesvirus Type 4, Fernando A. Osorio, J. A. Galeota-Wheeler, D. E. Reed, O. Lopez Dec 1996

About The Cellular Tropism Of The Gammaherpesvirus Bovine Herpesvirus Type 4, Fernando A. Osorio, J. A. Galeota-Wheeler, D. E. Reed, O. Lopez

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

We read with interest the recent report by Egyed et al. (4) about the distribution in tissue, in the natural host, of bovine herpesvirus type 4 (BHV-4), a member of the gammaherpesvirus group. Using PCR, those authors were able to trace BHV-4 (Movar strain) in several tissues of experimentally infected cattle (mostly spleen, lung, trachea, and nasal epithelium tissues) at different times, ranging from 3 to 48 days postinfection. The authors also report consistent detection of BHV-4 DNA in what they consider to be a pure population of lymphocytes obtained from peripheral blood of the BHV-4- infected cattle, and then …

The Behlen Observatory Variable Star Survey, Iv, Edward G. Schmidt, Anil Seth Dec 1996

The Behlen Observatory Variable Star Survey, Iv, Edward G. Schmidt, Anil Seth

Edward Schmidt Publications

Finding charts, accurate coordinates, and light curves are presented for 106 variable stars including 6 which are newly discovered. Parameters descriptive of the light curves are tabulated including periods for 16 stars which lacked them. The periods from the General Catalog of Variable Stars for ten stars were found to be seriously in error. The classification of the stars is discussed. Revisions or refinements of the classifications from the General Catalogue of Variable Stars are suggested for 20 stars and classifications are given for 7 which were previously unclassified. 15%-23% of the Bailey type ab RR Lyrae stars show scatter …

Stars Classified As Constant In The General Catalogue Of Variable Stars, Ii, Edward G. Schmidt Dec 1996

Stars Classified As Constant In The General Catalogue Of Variable Stars, Ii, Edward G. Schmidt

Edward Schmidt Publications

Photometric observations have been made of 36 stars classified as CST or CST: in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars. Six of these stars are found to vary and three others were deemed possible variables. Of the certain variables, two (MR Her and TY Sge) are red pulsators, one (V1585 Cyg) is a rapid irregular variable, one is apparently a short period Cepheid-strip star (V432 Oph), one is an eclipsing binary (AQ Boo), and one is of uncertain type (V351 Cyg). The stars we have observed as MR Her and TY Sge are the same ones which were identified on …

The Creation Of Theory: A Recent Application Of The Grounded Theory Method, Naresh R. Pandit Dec 1996

The Creation Of Theory: A Recent Application Of The Grounded Theory Method, Naresh R. Pandit

The Qualitative Report

This paper outlines a particular approach to building theory that was employed in a recent doctoral research project (Pandit, 1995). Three aspects used in conjunction indicate the project's novelty: firstly, the systematic and rigorous application of the grounded theory method; secondly, the use of on-line computerised databases as a primary source of data; and, thirdly, the use of a qualitative data analysis software package to aid the process of grounded theory building.

In Search Of A Dissertation Committee:Using A Qualitative Research Approach To Study A Lived Experience, Laurie L. Hernandez Dec 1996

In Search Of A Dissertation Committee:Using A Qualitative Research Approach To Study A Lived Experience, Laurie L. Hernandez

The Qualitative Report

This paper tells a personal story of one student's experience. I am a doctoral candidate and qualitative researcher in a Family Therapy program located in South Florida. In this project, I discuss how I took a qualitative research posture toward the making of an important decision in my life, and in my academic career: Choosing a dissertation committee. The paper is a narrative of how I went about using qualitative research methods and sociological introspection (Ellis, 1991) to "study" my way through the process of this unique experience.
