Synergistic Decision-Making Systems: Using Models Of Decision-Making Behaviors And Resources To Design Better Decision-Making System, Ronald R. Carter
Synergistic Decision-Making Systems: Using Models Of Decision-Making Behaviors And Resources To Design Better Decision-Making System, Ronald R. Carter
Masters Theses
Despite advances in decision-making systems, many practical issues remain unaddressed and much of the computer's potential for supporting decisions is unrealized. The existing systems are often limited to specific decision-making activities or domains, and they force the decision-maker to adopt a closed and inflexible way of doing things. What is needed is a new approach to building decision-making systems, one that is not focused on how decisions should be made, but on the behaviors and resources involved in decision-making and how they affect the results. This paper explores such an approach. It examines how models of decision-making behaviors and resources …

High-Pressure Oxidation Rates For Large Coal And Char Particles, James A. Mathias
High-Pressure Oxidation Rates For Large Coal And Char Particles, James A. Mathias
Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of this study was to investigate the factors that influence the oxidation rate of large (five to eight millimeters in diameter) coal and char particles. To accomplish this, experiments were performed in which the gas temperature, gas velocity, particle size, partial pressure of oxygen, and total pressure were varied. The experiments were performed with the cantilever balance attachment and the high pressure controlled profile reactor.
Approximately 90 combustion experiments were performed with Pittsburgh, Utah Blind Canyon, and Wyodak-Anderson coal. These experiments were performed at atmospheric pressure with air and varied gas temperature, gas velocity, and particle size. …

Using a qualitative research design, interviews were held with 10 legislators and 6 higher education leaders selected in accordance with the concept of purposeful sampling. Legislative participants included five members from the Senate and five …
Gross And Histological Features Of A Myofascial Trigger Point In The Upper Trapezius, Kathryn E. Levee
Gross And Histological Features Of A Myofascial Trigger Point In The Upper Trapezius, Kathryn E. Levee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to precisely locate, in living humans, a myofascial trigger point associated with the upper portion of the trapezius muscle (TrP1) that refers pain to the head and neck and to determine if this point is associated with anatomical structures. This study is descriptive and utilizes data from measurements of the location of TrP1 in relation to anatomical landmarks, of pressure sensitivity overlying the trigger point and electromyography recordings in localizing the trigger point. Information obtained from living humans was used to determine anatomical correlation to structures in cadavers. Results indicated there is little variability …

An Analysis Of The Transactional Distance In Asynchronous Telecourses At A Community College Using The Group Embedded Figures Test, Roger J. Brenner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Asynchronous distance education telecourses are the technological version of traditional correspondence courses. Students in asynchronous telecourses receive videos and printed material but they may not have any contact with the instructor or other students. This study analyzed the academic performance of 154 Southwest Virginia Community College students enrolled in 27 different telecourses during one semester. The purpose of this study was to determine if students' cognitive styles impacted their achievement in distance education courses. Students were given the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) which categorized the students as field dependent or field independent. A field dependent's cognitive style is one …

Avocats Et Divorce Aux Etats-Unis: La Transformation Des Pratiques Professionnelles, Lynn M. Mather, Craig A. Mcewen, Richard J. Maiman
Journal Articles
Elucidation Of Vancomycin's Enantioselective Binding Site Using Its Copper Complex, Usha B. Nair, Samuel S.C. Chang, Daniel W. Armstrong, Yasir Y. Rawjee, Drake S. Eggleston, James V. Mcardle
Elucidation Of Vancomycin's Enantioselective Binding Site Using Its Copper Complex, Usha B. Nair, Samuel S.C. Chang, Daniel W. Armstrong, Yasir Y. Rawjee, Drake S. Eggleston, James V. Mcardle
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Vancomycin forms a stable complex with Cu2+ in neutral aqueous solutions. The enantioselectivity of native vancomycin was compared to that of the copper-vancomycin complex using capillary electrophoresis (CE). There were significant differences in their enantioselectivities. This can be attributed to the fact that copper ion coordinates with some of the same functional groups in vancomycin that are essential for chiral recognition and enantioresolution. An amine moiety that provides one of the more important enantioselective interactions was identified. This chiral interaction site was illustrated using a color-coded, space-filling model of the X-ray crystal structure of the copper-vancomycin complex. Successful enantioselective interactions …

Optimization Of Solder Paste Volume For Tape Ball Grid Array (Tbga) Packages, Harjinder S. Bajwa
Optimization Of Solder Paste Volume For Tape Ball Grid Array (Tbga) Packages, Harjinder S. Bajwa
Master's Projects
A complete design of experiment was conducted to determine the optimum solder paste volume needed to establish reliable solder joints on tape ball grid arrays. The focus of the investigation was to optimize the solder paste volume, thus eliminating soldering defects such as shorting to ground plane due to solder wicking, bridging, and insufficient or open solder. Based on theoretical calculations for the solder paste volume, a matrix was developed and stencils were designed to deposit paste to the calculated volumes. Four parameters; solder paste volume, thickness and aperture openings in stencil design, reflow temperature, and pad geometries on the …

Over the past 20 years California’s coastal management program has succeeded in making previously inaccessible stretches of California coastline available to the public. New stairways from coastal bluffs to the beaches below have been constructed, and coastal parks, trails and public recreational facilities have been created to enable larger numbers of California residents and visitors to access some of the world’s finest stretches of sandy beaches and reefs, tidepools, scenic views and surf. Today, roughly half of the state’s 1,100 mile stretch of coastline is in public ownership and, with the exception of military bases and public utility properties, nearly …
Sputtered Alumina Film Properties, Balroop Grewal
Sputtered Alumina Film Properties, Balroop Grewal
Master's Projects
Alumina is used as undercoat, gap, and overcoat layer in thin film head manufacturing. This project was a study of effect of sputter deposition parameters such as target power, substrate bias, pressure, deposition temperature, and preheating of the wafer on the alumina film properties. It was found that argon inclusion in the film greatly influences the film structure. Argon inclusion increases with substrate bias. The alumina film showed higher etch rates and stress at higher argon inclusion, A designed experiment showed that preheating the wafer improves the adhesion of the alumina film. The confirmation run shows that there was no …
Use Of Embedded Wireless Networks Within Instrumentation Products: Analysis And Performance Mapping Of A Distributed System, Behzad Parvahan
Use Of Embedded Wireless Networks Within Instrumentation Products: Analysis And Performance Mapping Of A Distributed System, Behzad Parvahan
Master's Projects
Traditional instrumentation systems can be categorized into two groups: generic and custom systems. The former are standard, off-the-shelf machines, while the latter consist of specialty systems which perform target-specific tasks. While it is difficult to accurately characterize these specialty systems as a group (due to the varied nature of their functions), the standard machines are generally single units that provide limited customization and mobility.
This report explores the feasibility of a system that maintains the functionality of standard test equipment, while adding a scaleable, mobile, distributed architecture that reduces size, subsystem power consumption, and ultimately overall cost when compared to …
