Econometric Modeling Of Enrollment Behavior, Stephen H. Brooks Dec 1996

Econometric Modeling Of Enrollment Behavior, Stephen H. Brooks

Journal of Student Financial Aid

This paper describes using econometric modeling techniques to analyze the enrollment behavior of admitted students at four-year colleges and universities. It is based on the author's work over the last four years with approximately two dozen institutions seeking to understand more about the behavior of their admitted students-especially those requesting financial aid. This approach to modeling enrollment behavior has been discussed frequently in the literature and has been adopted or attempted at a number of institutions. Here, schools' experiences with such an approach are examined. We look at a wide spectrum of institutions differing by size, selectivity, and program focus.

Pricing Differences Among Private Colleges: The Impact Of Discounting Through College-Funded Grants, Donald L. Basch Dec 1996

Pricing Differences Among Private Colleges: The Impact Of Discounting Through College-Funded Grants, Donald L. Basch

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Substantial differences in discounting exist among private, not-for-profit, four-year colleges. Such differences must be considered to provide an accurate characterization of the actual differences among colleges in pricing. Differences across colleges in discounting appear related to differences in admissions selectivity, nominal price, endowment per student, and regional location. For those who admire how very selective, high price colleges offer substantial aid packages to needy accepted students and ignore need in their admissions decisions, there is a challenging irony. One reason many of these colleges can sustain such policies is that stringent selectivity and high price may lower the percentage of …

Corporate Governance: What It Means And What It Needs, N Balasubramanian Dec 1996

Corporate Governance: What It Means And What It Needs, N Balasubramanian

IIMB Management Review

While corporate governance as a concept has received in creasing attention in recent years, there appears to be some lack of clarity, at least in popular perception, as to what exactly is covered under this expression. Similarly, there is also a great deal of righteous indignation, particularly on hindsight, when some thing apparently goes wrong with the corporate world and frequently efforts are made to pinpoint responsibility and, perhaps, even seek retribution. This self-correcting reaction is, in most cases, the societal esponse towards chastising the wrong-doers and restoring order and balance in normative compliance. Very much like the divine incarnations …

Business Communication Today By Sushil Bahl. Response Books, New Delhi. A Division Of Sage Publications., C N Kumar

IIMB Management Review

Ihe book under review, as the author says in the preface, has been mainly targeted at new entrants and students in communication- related fields such as advertising, public relations and media. The book starts with the subject of what business communication is about, and covers aspects of written, verbal and non-verbal communication and how to make them effective. This could serve as a useful hand book for beginners as well as other more experienced practitioners and “executives on-run”.

Corporate Governance: Improving Accounting Practices, S Sundararajan Dec 1996

Corporate Governance: Improving Accounting Practices, S Sundararajan

IIMB Management Review

Only a few fundamental ideas in the field of business management have stood the test of time and contributed to economic growth. The concept of a corporate form of organisation being akin to the democratic form of government is one such. The corporate structure is supported by management and corporate governance is all about ensuring that the management protects the interests of a number of stake holders. Providing reliable and relevant financial information about the corporate entity, thereby enabling different users to make sensible economic decisions, is one of the important tasks assigned to the management.

A Theory Of Insurance Policy Interpretation, Kenneth S. Abraham Dec 1996

A Theory Of Insurance Policy Interpretation, Kenneth S. Abraham

Michigan Law Review

The first principle of insurance law is captured by the maxim contra proferentem, which directs that ambiguities in a contract be interpreted "against the drafter," who is almost always the insurer. Yet given the modern recognition that language is an inherently imperfect instrument for communicating meaning, insurance policy provisions are in a sense always ambiguous. Moreover, in addition to contra proferentem, policyholders may invoke such allied doctrines as waiver, estoppel, and the rule that the reasonable expectations of the insured should be honored even if those expectations are unambiguously contradicted by fine-print provisions in the policy. Contra proferentem and these …

Family Fundamentals, Richard C. Reuben

Faculty Publications

On the surface, ML.B. v. S.L.J., No. 95-853, hardly seems worthy of the nation's highest court, in part because our scheme of federalism generally leaves issues such as child custody to state law. But peeling back the layers of this case reveals the potential for a significant ruling on the constitutional treatment of family relationships, fundamental rights and access to courts for civil proceed with a appeals.
