A generalized terrestrial ecosystem process model, BIOME-BGC (for BIOME BioGeoChemical Cycles), was used to simulate the global fluxes of CO2 resulting from photosynthesis, autotrophic respiration, and heterotrophic respiration. Daily meteorological data for the year 1987, gridded to 1° by 1°, were used to drive the model simulations. From the maximum value of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for 1987, the leaf area index for each grid cell was computed. Global NPP was estimated to be 52 Pg C, and global Rh was estimated to be 66 Pg C. Model predictions of the stable carbon isotopic ratio 13 …

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications
Adriamycin (ADR) is a potent anticancer drug known to cause severe cardiac toxicity. Although ADR generates free radicals, the role of free radicals in the development of cardiac toxicity and the intracellular target for ADR-induced cardiac toxicity are still not well understood. We produced three transgenic mice lines expressing increased levels of human manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), a mitochondrial enzyme, as an animal model to investigate the role of ADR-mediated free radical generation in mitochondria. The human MnSOD was expressed, functionally active, and properly transported into mitochondria in the heart of transgenic mice. The levels of copper-zinc SOD, catalase, and …

The Regulation Of Deep-Well Injection: A Changing Environment Beneath The Surface, Earle A. Herbert
The Regulation Of Deep-Well Injection: A Changing Environment Beneath The Surface, Earle A. Herbert
Pace Environmental Law Review
Deep-well injection has been a mainstay of hazardous waste disposal for over 70 years. Before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created, there were concerns as to the proper place for deep-well injection as a waste management technique. Over the years, environmentalists have been concerned with the potential for contamination of drinking water supplies from deep-well injection. Industry has also shown concern about -deep-well injection, but from a different perspective. To industry, deep-well injection is a precious, limited resource. It is within this context that Congress and the EPA have regulated deep-well injection. It is that process of regulation …

Attorney Client Confidentiality In The Criminal Environmental Law Context: Blowing The Whistle On The Toxic Client, Nicholas Targ
Pace Environmental Law Review
Whether an attorney should "blow the whistle" on a client's violation of environmental law is a question that is likely to confront attorneys with increasing frequency. While the regulation of pollution is not new, the criminalization of the violation is a relatively new development. Recognizing the impact of pollution on human health and the environment, Congress has passed a panoply of laws making certain unauthorized disposal and emission practices, and the failure to keep records of hazardous wastes felony offenses. This Article explores the ethics of disclosure within the context of environmental crimes by examining the following threshold questions: (1) …
Property Rights And Growth Management In Florida: Balancing Opportunity And Responsibility In A Changing Political Climate, Michael Murphy
Property Rights And Growth Management In Florida: Balancing Opportunity And Responsibility In A Changing Political Climate, Michael Murphy
Pace Environmental Law Review
This Article examines the practical and legal consequences of the Florida's Property Rights Act on its growth management system. Responding to a vocal property rights movement, in 1995 Florida enacted one of the most far reaching property rights compensation measures to date. The new law allows property owners to seek compensation for any governmental action that "inordinately burdens" the use of their property, a threshold below the requirement for a constitutional takings claim. Ten years earlier, Florida enacted a comprehensive growth management system aimed at protecting Florida's dwindling natural resources and preserving the quality of life enjoyed by the state's …

Long Island Sound: A Bibliography Of Legal And Related Materials Bibliography, Ann Powers, Eric S. Andreas
Pace Environmental Law Review
Whether your view is from the deck of a sailboat or the bridge of a garbage barge, Long Island Sound is in trouble. Stretching for 110 miles, locked between highly developed shorelines with some of the most intense land use in the world, and draining a 16,000 mile watershed that stretches to Canada, the Sound is "downhill" from eight million people. As a result, it receives enormous amounts of wastes and debris from our city streets, suburban lawns, farms, fields, factories, and sewage treatment plants. It is an unfortunate truism that everything we do upon the land the way we …
