Title Ii Of The Violence Against Women Act, Bernadette E. Hill Apr 1996

Title Ii Of The Violence Against Women Act, Bernadette E. Hill

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

In 1994 Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act. This thesis focuses on Title II which gives remedies to gender motivated crimes at the federal level. Title III received a lot of criticism due to a variety of reasons. This thesis looks at the question of if Title III is an appropriate way of addressing the problem of violence against women, if criticisms of Title II warranted? What revisions should be made?

Framing The Issues For Cameras In The Courtrooms: Redefining Judicial Dignity And Decorum, A Wayne Mackay Apr 1996

Framing The Issues For Cameras In The Courtrooms: Redefining Judicial Dignity And Decorum, A Wayne Mackay

Dalhousie Law Journal

This article examines the role of s. 2(b) of the Charter of Rights in determining the role of cameras in Canadian courtrooms. The discussions reveal that arguments in opposition to cameras are largely unfounded and in contradiction to the freedom of expression guarantee. The denial of the right is in reality based on judges' and lawyers' fear of loss of control of the courtroom environment. Cameras should only be banned from courtrooms as part of a total publication ban, and then only after a careful s. 1 analysis

A Confluence Of Authority And Critique, H Archibald Kaiser Apr 1996

A Confluence Of Authority And Critique, H Archibald Kaiser

Dalhousie Law Journal

Reading about murder in the news, seeing it portrayed on the longrunning British television series Inspector Morse, or pondering it as one digests Crime and Punishment are in many ways far preferable to studying, teaching or practising the law of homicide. After a few chapters, and particularly following my re-immersion into the cold substantive law of homicide which commences in chapter 3, one is certainly reminded that this is not a work to read as a pastime in "blissful circumstances". It is, nonetheless, a remarkably good book in terms of its breadth, authority and originality in approach and substance. It …

Volunteer Fire Departments: A Neglected American Voluntary Association, Michelle C. Akers Apr 1996

Volunteer Fire Departments: A Neglected American Voluntary Association, Michelle C. Akers

Masters Theses

This thesis explores the social and cultural dimensions of volunteer fire departments (VFDs) in West Michigan. Through interviews and observations of four VFDs, important dimensions of social cohesion and variability within and between the departments and communities are revealed. An emphasis is placed upon the gender relations within the departments and their effect upon the relations in the larger community. From these companies, a sketch of a small West Michigan community is derived. If used as a companion with other research of Midwestern communities of a greater scope and sample size, an understanding of social organization and social structure may …

An Exploratory Study Of Gender And The Process Of Negotiating Academic Contracts Among Sociologists, Miriam M. Newton Apr 1996

An Exploratory Study Of Gender And The Process Of Negotiating Academic Contracts Among Sociologists, Miriam M. Newton

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Ample evidence supports the existence of the gender wage gap. One explanation for the gender wage gap in academia may be men's and women's different experiences of the process of negotiating academic contracts. Past literature on gender differences in negotiation suggests that males are more likely to initiate negotiations and are more successful in negotiations than women. This study investigates the process of negotiating academic contracts through a survey of recent PhD graduates in sociology. The research is guided by two questions: (1) What are the experiences of new faculty regarding the process of negotiating academic contracts; and (2) What …
