The In/Fertile, The Too Fertile, And The Dysfertile, Lisa C. Ikemoto
The In/Fertile, The Too Fertile, And The Dysfertile, Lisa C. Ikemoto
UC Law Journal
This article takes the ongoing debate about whether and how procreative technologies should be regulated, and goes beneath it. Starting with the characterization of procreative technology as infertility treatment, this article explores three primary sets of norms constituting that characterization-fertility, technology, and family. The analysis is an attempt to map the interconnecting discourses of fertility, technology, and family, and so, proceeds in a non-linear manner.
Professor Ikemoto begins by exploring the edges of public discussion about acceptable procreative technology uses. That is, she first questions public responses to uses that have provoked controversy, from the first 'test-tube baby' to the …
White Robes For Worship: The Umnazaretha Of The Nazareth Baptist Church In South Africa, Karen H. Brown
White Robes For Worship: The Umnazaretha Of The Nazareth Baptist Church In South Africa, Karen H. Brown
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
South-eastern Africa was a major locus of Christian missionary activity during the 19th and early 20th century and some dozen or more denominations took to the mission field among the Zulus.1 A Zulu man, Isaiah Shembe (c. 1879-1935) was one of many attracted to the Christian faith. His independent and questioning nature, however, did not allow him to fit into the structure of the white-led missions. Shembe founded his own church, the Nazareth Baptist Church (lbandla lamaNazaretha), around 1910. Its beliefs and practices are based on a unique synthesis of Christian, largely Old Testament, dogma and Zulu …
The Reproduction And Ceremonial Offering Of Sacred Textiles And Apparel In Ise Jingu's Shikinen Sengu, Rosemarie Bernard
The Reproduction And Ceremonial Offering Of Sacred Textiles And Apparel In Ise Jingu's Shikinen Sengu, Rosemarie Bernard
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
This paper addresses the reproduction and ceremonial offering of sacred textiles and apparel on the occasion of the vicennial transfer rituals (Shikinen Sengu), which take place once in twenty years in Ise Jingu. The most recent performance of the 1300-year old ritual tradition took place in 1993. The ritual climax of the Shikinen Sengu consists of the ceremonial transfer of the "body" of the deity Amaterasu Omikami (a sacred mirror) from the 20-year old sanctum to an identical structure constructed in an adjacent area. Along with the body of the deity, thousands of magnificent treasures, textiles and apparel are ceremonially …
Heirloom And Hierarchy. The Sacred Lawo Butu Cloth Of The Lio Of Central Flores, Willemijn De Jong
Heirloom And Hierarchy. The Sacred Lawo Butu Cloth Of The Lio Of Central Flores, Willemijn De Jong
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The most sacred ceremonial cloth of the Lio on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia is an heirloom called lawo butu, a tubular skirt or sarong traditionally worn by high-ranking women at the most important fertility ceremony. This beaded sarong is only found in one of the main cultural centres of the Lio, the weaving village of Nggela on the south coast of Central Flores, a village of almost 1300 inhabitants. Until Indonesian independence in 1945 this village was more stratified by a rank system of nobles (ata ria), commoners (anafai walu) and slaves …
Ritual Cloth As Emblem Of Socio-Religious Values In Indonesia, Rens Heringa
Ritual Cloth As Emblem Of Socio-Religious Values In Indonesia, Rens Heringa
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Recent anthropological studies of Indonesian textiles have reported in detail on the important ritual role of locally-made heirloom cloths among a range of ethnic groups throughout the archipelago. Moreover, the few extant studies with a local comparative bias have shown how the function of one particular textile may vary between people living in different villages or belonging to different social groups. Geirnaert has pointed out that, obviously, this indicates that textiles may form part of a wider geographical or symbolical system (Geirnaert 1992:xxviii). It has also been shown that this type of comparative effort can be taken beyond the archipelago …

1 | The Akeldama Tombs: Three Burial Caves In The Kidron Valley, Jerusalem, Gideon Avni, Zvi Greenhut
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
The Kidron Valley was one of the main burial grounds of First Temple-period Jerusalem, and numerous tombs were also hewn here during the Second Temple period. During road works in the valley, three large, elaborate Second Temple-period tombs were exposed, which contained an abundance of rich and intact finds, some still in situ, including pottery, glass, jewelry, a sarcophagus and many ossuaries, some inscribed. The finds also provided evidence that the tombs were reused during the Roman and Byzantine periods. This volume describes the architecture, burial customs, finds and chronology, as well as an analysis of the bones from …

Beads Among The Juang Of India, Alok Kumar Kanungo
Beads Among The Juang Of India, Alok Kumar Kanungo
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
The Juang comprise a major primitive community in the state of Orissa in east-central India. Until relatively recently, they had a rich material culture. In particular, their dress and ornaments were very important to them. Today, only very old women wear beads and other ornaments in the traditional way, except on special occasions. This paper seeks to reconstruct the traditional costume of the Juang, with emphasis on the beads, and notes the changes it has undergone over the past 130 years. The findings are based on a survey of the ethnohistoric literature combined with active participant fieldwork in 1995 and …
Gender And Status Inequalities In Yemen: Honour, Economics, And Politics, Sheila Carapico
Gender And Status Inequalities In Yemen: Honour, Economics, And Politics, Sheila Carapico
Political Science Faculty Publications
The aim of this national case study, a synthetic summary of the work and evidence on women in a tribal, Muslim, Arabian, rapidly changing society, is to contribute to the intersection of the Middle Eastern and women-in-development literatures by situating women first within tribal and Islamic settings and then in the context of rapid changes in political and economic circumstances during the past thirty years. It therefore considers feminine roles in the different historical social strata before examining how new services brought by modernization, class formation associated with the penetration of capitalism, and political struggles between right and left all …
Multiculturalism In Medical Decisionmaking: The Notion Of Informed Waiver, Elysa Gordon
Multiculturalism In Medical Decisionmaking: The Notion Of Informed Waiver, Elysa Gordon
Fordham Urban Law Journal
Beginning with the proposition that the western medical tradition of emphasizing patient autonomy undermines a patient's ability to limit his or her role in medical decision-making, the author of this student note proposes a model of informed waiver to counterbalance the perceived legal bias towards informed consent. Part I explains the western notion of patient autonomy in two distinct ways: first, autonomy is rooted in western ideals of self-governance and political freedom; second, the article discusses how this idea has been developed in American courts. In Part II, the author draws on anecdotal and empirical evidence to demonstrate that autonomy …
Prenatal Screening And The Culture Of Motherhood, Lori B. Andrews
Prenatal Screening And The Culture Of Motherhood, Lori B. Andrews
UC Law Journal
Physicians use prenatal genetic tests on pregnant women to gain an increasing amount of information about fetuses before birth. These tests do more than predict the future health of the developing fetuses, however; they transform the culture of motherhood-society's expectations of pregnant women and women's expectations of themselves. Decisions to undergo genetic testing-and control or lack of control over dissemination of the results of testing-affect women's self-image, personal relationships, and how women are judged by institutions such as insurers and employers. This article reviews psychological, anthropological, and sociological research on the impacts of genetic testing and argues that healthcare providers …
Comment On Moliterno, Legal Education, Experiential Education, And Professional Responsibility, Lance Liebman
Comment On Moliterno, Legal Education, Experiential Education, And Professional Responsibility, Lance Liebman
Faculty Scholarship
In attempting to predict and prescribe the future, my vision of the recent history of legal education differs from Professor Moliterno's in certain relevant ways.
I graduated from Law School in 1967. I learned largely through doctrinal courses that delivered steady training in thinking like a lawyer and information about areas of law. These courses exposed me and my classmates to legal lingo and to the standard types of legal arguments. We learned, largely by hearing the teacher and our fellow students, to make verbal moves and to see the strengths and limitations of others' argumentation skills and techniques. We …

The Empirical Development Of A Curriculum On The Issues Concerning The History Of Ancient Israel, Ruzica Gregor
The Empirical Development Of A Curriculum On The Issues Concerning The History Of Ancient Israel, Ruzica Gregor
Dissertations
Problem. An understanding of Israel's history is crucial to a Christian view of history, including its morals and values, and is a foundation stone of most conservative Christians including Seventh-day Adventists and their religious educational philosophy. There is a vital need for a curriculum that provides reasonable answers to the most frequently asked questions about Israel's early history and builds a solid base for the Christian/Adventist faith. The purpose of this study was to meet this need by empirically developing a curriculum for religion majors in Seventh-day Adventist colleges. Issues discussed include the Philosophical Background and Importance of History; the …
