Tales Of Wonder - Science Fiction And Fantasy In The Age Of Jane Austen, Madawc Williams Oct 1996

Tales Of Wonder - Science Fiction And Fantasy In The Age Of Jane Austen, Madawc Williams

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This paper challenges the accepted view that the works of writers such as Mrs. Radcliffe, “Monk” Lewis, Maturin and Mary Shelley are part of a Gothic tradition deriving from Horace Walpole’s Castle of Otranto. The paper also studies the connection of Jane Austen to these writers and will try to unravel the errors of Brian Aldiss, whose ideas are taken from earlier authors.

Natural Mysticism In Kenneth Grahame's The Wind In The Willows, J. R. Wytenbroek Oct 1996

Natural Mysticism In Kenneth Grahame's The Wind In The Willows, J. R. Wytenbroek

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This paper explores the use of Pan as the medium for an intense mystical experience in “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”, and how this mystical passage fits in with the rest of The Wind in the Willows. The author also explores possible influences on Grahame from writers of the nineteenth century who had mystical emphases in their books. The “Piper” is one of the most beautiful passages of natural mysticism in twentieth-century literature, but one rarely discussed: the author hopes this paper will begin to fill this critical gap.

Quid Hinieldus Cum Christo? - New Perspectives On Tolkien's Theological Dilemma And His Sub-Creation Theory, Nils Ivar Agøy Oct 1996

Quid Hinieldus Cum Christo? - New Perspectives On Tolkien's Theological Dilemma And His Sub-Creation Theory, Nils Ivar Agøy

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

In the 1920s and 1930s Tolkien’s developing, and to all appearances pagan, legendarium posed a theological dilemma to its devoutly Christian author. How could it be reconciled with his faith? There are striking parallels with the Danish theologian, poet and philologist N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872). This paper will try to establish whether Tolkien’s answer, which is only partly to be found in “On Fairy-Stories”, was directly influenced by Grundtvig’s attempts at reconciling Norse myths and Christendom.

Tolkien's Revision Of The Romantic Tradition, Chris Seeman Oct 1996

Tolkien's Revision Of The Romantic Tradition, Chris Seeman

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This paper explores Tolkien’s vision of fantasy within the broader historical context of Romanticism, clarifying the ways in which he inherits and revises Romantic views of the creative imagination via the concept of “sub-creation”. Possible links with Coleridge’s thought are considered, especially with respect to the uses of Romanticism in the context of Christianity.

Open Minds, Closed Minds In The Lord Of The Rings, Christina Scull Oct 1996

Open Minds, Closed Minds In The Lord Of The Rings, Christina Scull

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

A study of prejudice and tolerance, from the insularity of the Hobbits of the Shire to the mistrust between the Elves and Dwarves and the very nationalistic outlook of Denethor. This paper will show how some characters grew and became more tolerant, and that Tolkien was sensible enough to realize that only small steps can be taken at a time. It will also consider the unwillingness of some to believe in anything not witnessed with their own senses, thus leading them to discard as legendary much of the wonder of Middle-earth.

Tolkien, Sayers, Sex And Gender, David Doughan Oct 1996

Tolkien, Sayers, Sex And Gender, David Doughan

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Tolkien’s expressed “loathing” for Dorothy Sayers and her novels Gaudy Night and Busman’s Honeymoon is remarkable considering that Sayers is generally considered to belong to the same milieu as the Inklings. Possible reasons for this are the contrast between the orthodox Catholic Tolkien’s view of male sexuality as inherently sinful, requiring “great mortification”, and Sayers’s frankly hedonistic approach. Another reason may be Sayers’s depiction of an independent Oxford women’s college getting by successfully without men, and her representation of marriage as a source of intellectual frustration for creative women.

"A Pattern Which Our Nature Cries Out For": The Medieval Tradition Of The Ordered Four In The Fiction Of J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen Yandell Oct 1996

"A Pattern Which Our Nature Cries Out For": The Medieval Tradition Of The Ordered Four In The Fiction Of J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen Yandell

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This paper considers the fiction of J.R.R. Tolkien and the other Inklings (specifically C.S. Lewis and Charles Williams) as being influenced by a set of shared ideas. First, Tolkien and the Inklings believed in a divine creator whose creation displays order. Every individual, they claimed, has been divinely called to be a “sub-creator” to create art so that this universal order might be reflected. And the Inklings’ writings testify to the importance of this order in their lives (as displayed by six Medieval analogies: God as composer, choreographer, author, painter, player and guide). Secondly, Tolkien and the Inklings were familiar …

Vcu Voice (1996-10-14) Oct 1996

Vcu Voice (1996-10-14)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Relative Intranuclear Magnesium And Phosphorus Contents In Normal And Tumor Cells Of The Human Thyroid Gland As Revealed By Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Microanalysis, Geza L. Lukacs, Imre Zs.-Nagy, Janos Steiber, Ferenc Gyori, Gyorgy Balazs Oct 1996

Relative Intranuclear Magnesium And Phosphorus Contents In Normal And Tumor Cells Of The Human Thyroid Gland As Revealed By Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Microanalysis, Geza L. Lukacs, Imre Zs.-Nagy, Janos Steiber, Ferenc Gyori, Gyorgy Balazs

Scanning Microscopy

Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis was performed on altogether 42 surgically removed tissue specimens of 32 patients, which were taken either from intact thyroid parts or various histopathologically verified tumors of the thyroid gland. The tissue specimens were processed with the freeze-fracture-freeze-drying technique and then analyzed in the so-called bulk specimen form. The studies were carried out during the years 1980-81, when intranuclear monovalent ionic composition was studied in detail. From the retained total elemental peak list, it was possible to calculate retrospectively the relative intranuclear Mg and P contents. The data processed by nested (hierarchical) analysis of variance show that …

Scientific Verses: Subversion Of Cartesian Theory And Practice In The "Discours A Madame De La Sabliere", Russell J. Ganim Oct 1996

Scientific Verses: Subversion Of Cartesian Theory And Practice In The "Discours A Madame De La Sabliere", Russell J. Ganim

French Language and Literature Papers

Study of the relationship between science and La Fontaine's Fables has a limited, but thought-provoking past. Beverly Ridgely asserts that while La Fontaine represents himself mainly as an "artist" and "moralist" concerned with depicting the irony and comedy of life, he "also had a genuinely studious and reflective side... [with] a real aspiration to write scientific philosophical verse in emulation of such ancient masters as Lucretius and Virgil" (180). Ridgely analyzes the influence of late seventeenth-century cosmic theory on L'astrologue qui se laisse tomber dans un puits and L'horoscope. The two poems attack the concept of judicial astrology, which …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objectives of this study were to determine whether circulating concentrations of gonadotropins and gonadal hormones of boars were altered as a result of selection of pigs for size of testes or for embryonal survival and(or) number of ovulations. Included in Exp. 1 and 2 were boars with the greatest estimated paired weight of testes (TS) and boars from a control (C) line. Concentrations of FSH were similar (P > .10) in boars from the TS and C lines. In Exp. 3, 4, and 5, circulating concentrations of FSH and 17β-estradiol (E2) were evaluated in neonates, during pubertal …
