Ecology And Life History Traits Of The Benthopelagic Mysid Boreomysis Oparva From The Eastern Tropical Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone, Jennifer Saltzman
Ecology And Life History Traits Of The Benthopelagic Mysid Boreomysis Oparva From The Eastern Tropical Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone, Jennifer Saltzman
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
The ecology and life history traits of Boreomysis oparva, a recently described benthopelagic mysid, were examined from the seamount Volcano 7 which penetrates into the oxygen minimum zone. In the near-bottom waters, B. oparva was very abundant at the lower summit in the oxygen minimum zone (<0.2 ml O2 l-1). It decreased in abundance with increasing depth and increasing oxygen at the flank and was absent from the base of Volcano 7. Length distribution of free-living stages was continuous, from 4 to 26 mm, and similar at the lower summit and flank. This and the presence of larvae of all …0.2>
Comment On Tacsan's The Effectiveness Of International Law: Analternative Approach, Mortimer N.S. Sellers
Comment On Tacsan's The Effectiveness Of International Law: Analternative Approach, Mortimer N.S. Sellers
All Faculty Scholarship
To be "effective" international law must be obeyed. Often it is, even by unopposably powerful nations such as the United States of America. Why? Force and coercion cannot be the reason, but fear plays a role-the fear of appearing unjust in one's own eyes, or the eyes of one's friends.

The In Vitro Manipulation Of Cauliflower (Brassica Oleracea L. Convar. Botrytis (L.) Alef. Var. Botrytis L.) Meristematic Tissues For Utilisation In Genetic Improvement Programmes, Martin Louis Kieffer
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Cauliflower curd meristem activity (organogenic, plastochronic, phyllotactic) was analysed biometrically and confirmed that the curd is the product of a constant process of meristem production and branch ramification with little if any dominance between branch apices. A growth model based on curd branching pattern was developed and its mathematical expression enabled the estimation of the number of meristems carried by a curd at maturity to be over ten million which was previously widely underestimated. Analysis of the response to the in vitro culture of this meristematic tissues revealed that meristems are not predetermined to produce flower and that their shoot …
Bereavement And Moral And Spiritual Development : An Exploration Of The Experiences Of Children And Young People, Valerie Clark
Bereavement And Moral And Spiritual Development : An Exploration Of The Experiences Of Children And Young People, Valerie Clark
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis, which is in two parts, attempts to interpret in moral and spiritual terms those responses to bereavement that are often described as psychological. In part one human development is considered comparing religious, philosophical, scientific and psychological theories and a model of the 'core self is proposed (body, mind and emotions) which responds to social and cultural influences in ways that can be considered moral and spiritual. Theories of duty, consequence and virtue are considered as well as Kohlberg's theory of justice reasoning and Gilligan's views about caring. Within spirituality notions of dualism and continuity-discontinuity are noted and a …
A Rule-Based Approach To Animating Multi-Agent Environments, Victor Ye
A Rule-Based Approach To Animating Multi-Agent Environments, Victor Ye
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
This dissertation describes ESCAPE (Expert Systems in Computer Animation Production Environments), a multi-agent animation system for building domain-oriented, rule-based visual programming environments. Much recent work in computer graphics has been concerned with producing behavioural animations of artificial life-forms mainly based on algorithmic approaches. This research indicates how, by adding an inference engine and rules that describe such behaviour, traditional computer animation environments can be enhanced. The comparison between using algorithmic approaches and using a rule-based approach for representing multi-agent worlds is not based upon their respective claims to completeness, but rather on the ease with which end users may express …
Vulvar Vestibulitis Syndrome: An Ultrastructural And Epidemiological Investigation, Penelope Sargeant
Vulvar Vestibulitis Syndrome: An Ultrastructural And Epidemiological Investigation, Penelope Sargeant
School of Biomedical Sciences Theses
Vulvar Vestibulitis Syndrome (VVS) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the vestibular epithelium of the vulva, which has been estimated to affect 15% of the female population (Goetsch, 1991 ). Many studies have attempted unsuccessfully, to elucidate the cause of this condition, and few advances have been made towards the understanding of the associated inflammatory response. The initial, and principal aim of this investigation was to characterise normal vestibular epithelium using electron microscopy. The ultrastructural characteristics of normal vestibular epithelium were compared with closely related epithelia, and with vestibular epithelia from VVS patients. Other aims included an investigation of the …
The Composite Scene: The Aesthetics Of Igbo Mask Theatre, Victor Ikechukwu Ukaegbu
The Composite Scene: The Aesthetics Of Igbo Mask Theatre, Victor Ikechukwu Ukaegbu
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
An observation of mask performances in Igboland in South-Eastern Nigeria reveals distinctions among displays from various communities. This is the product of a democratic society which encourages individualism and at the same time, sustains collectivism. This feature of Igbo masking has enriched and populated the Igbo theatrical scene with thousands of diverse and seemingly unconnected masking displays. Though these peculiarities do not indicate conceptual differences or imperfections, the numerous Igbo dialects and sub-cultural differences have not helped matters. Earlier studies by social anthropologists and a few theatre practitioners followed these differentials by focusing on particular masking types and sections of …

An Investigation Into The Fate Of Benzylpenicillin And Its Degradation Compounds In Milk Following Intramammary Treatments For Bovine Mastitis, David Roger Hulse
An Investigation Into The Fate Of Benzylpenicillin And Its Degradation Compounds In Milk Following Intramammary Treatments For Bovine Mastitis, David Roger Hulse
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The presence of antibiotics in bovine milk results mainly from the treatment of mastitis by intramammary infusion. The sale of this contaminated milk is illegal and the milk supply is routinely tested for adulteration by antibiotic residues. At present these tests are unspecific microbiological assays which detect only inhibitory substances and consequently the presence of any inactive degradation compounds is not tested for. Various chromatographic approaches exist in the literature which report the resolution of mixtures of antibiotic compounds from milk. However, the presence of antibiotic degradation residues in milk, which may have serious implications for the health of the …

Evaluation Of Techniques For The Biomonitoring Of Pollutants In Members Of The Ulvaceae, Rebecca Schild
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
This study involved the development and evaluation of a number of biomonitoring techniques for use with members of the Ulvaceae, Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) Link, and Viva lactuca (L.). The techniques included both previously established ones and those which required development. The two main procedures developed for these algae were the neutral red retention technique (making use of a vital stain) and the ion leakage Health Index (based upon electrolyte leakage). Following optimisation both were used to produce quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) for a series of n-alcohols using log KOW as the physicochemical parameter. The resultant QSARs were statistically indistinguishable with …

Acidic Marine Biotoxins Implicated In Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning, Eoin P. Carmody
Acidic Marine Biotoxins Implicated In Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning, Eoin P. Carmody
Theses
An okadaic acid (OA) etiology has been demonstrated for most outbreaks of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) in Europe, An isomer of OA, dinophysistoxin-2 (DTX-2), has recently been found in Irish waters and, in 1991 and 1994, was the major toxin during prolonged infestations in cultivated mussels (Mytilus edulis) along the south-west coast of Ireland.
The OA class of DSP toxins have been analysed by HPLC using modified versions of three established fluorescent derivatisation methods. A ‘dual tag’ method for the confirmation of specific toxins has also been developed.
Survey work has been carried out over the past four years on …

Development Of A New Hydroseeding Process For Soil Stabilisation And Vegetation, Eileen T. Keane
Theses
A variety of mechanical and chemical extraction procedures were used to produce crude alginate gels from 3 seaweed species. These viscous hydrocolloidal substances had excellent adhesive properties but did however prove phytotoxic to germinating seeds. Experimental gels were subsequently refined and germination trials were carried out to determine optimum gel types. Pilot field trials were set up to compare the 2 most favourable gels with existing commercial hydroseeding products imported from Norway and Sweden. These tests involved the use of experimental plots on loam and sand substrates with slopes of 0^, 22^ and 45^. A number of biodegradable organic substances …

Cross-Correlation: A Contrast Method For Studying Fetal Cardiovascular Time Series, Stacy Kalisz
Theses
Congenital cardiac malformations are a serious health concern affecting the development of the fetal cardiovascular system. Identification of a fetus with abnormalities early in pregnancy, 10-20 weeks gestation, could assist in clinical diagnosis and be a great asset in health care. This thesis is a continuation of, and works in concert with, other research efforts conducted at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) aimed at characterizing fetal cardiovascular health through applied signal processing. This thesis utilizes cross-correlation as a technique for analyzing the cyclic variations and assessing commonalities of individual parts of fetal umbilical artery time series data. These time series …

Evaluation Of Cannabinoid Receptor Interaction Of Anandamide, The Endogenous Cannabinoid Receptor Ligand, Irma Bateman Adams
Evaluation Of Cannabinoid Receptor Interaction Of Anandamide, The Endogenous Cannabinoid Receptor Ligand, Irma Bateman Adams
Theses and Dissertations
Recent evidence implicates anandamide as the endogenous ligand for the cannabinoid receptor. One purpose of this study was to determine the structural requirements for anandamide's receptor interaction and the influence of phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF), an enzyme inhibitor, on receptor affinity. A second objective was evaluation of the correlation between affinities of the analogs and in vivo pharmacological activities. The ability of anandamide and analogs to displace [3H]- CP 55,940 was determined by a filtration assay. Displacement curves for anandamide in the presence of PMSF produced a Ki of 89 ± 10 nM; without PMSF the Ki increased to 5400 ± …
