Method For Obtaining Antifungal And Herbicidal Compounds That Target The First Committed Step In Shingolipid Long-Chain Base Biosynthesis, Robert C. Dickson, Robert L. Lester

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Patents

The invention provides the LCB1 and LCB2 genes of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae that encode subunits of the enzyme serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), the first enzyme leading to synthesis of the long-base component of the sphingolipids. The present specification describes the isolation of the LCB1 and LCB2 genes. The invention further relates to methods of using these genes to either inhibit SPT activity or to inhibit synthesis of the enzyme. Furthermore, the invention relates to methods for constructing strains of S. cerevisiae or other organisms that can be used to select and to test for compounds that either inhibit SPT activity …

Persuasion Theories In The Practice Of Public Relations In The 1990'S, Susan E. Owens Dec 1996

Persuasion Theories In The Practice Of Public Relations In The 1990'S, Susan E. Owens

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to present ways in which persuasion theories are currently used in public relations and how persuasion theories could be used in public relations. Some public relations textbooks devote a chapter or section to persuasion theories and how they relate to public relations. The public relations practitioner needed a publication that expanded on these theories and provided cases of how they are used in public relations today.

To research persuasion theories and current application of them, current textbooks and periodicals were reviewed at several libraries. The searches at Rowan College, Richard Stockton College and Ocean …

Electro-Optical Imaging Of F-Actin And Endoplasmic Reticulum In Living And Fixed Plant Cells, Nina Stromgren Allen, Marty N. Bennett Dec 1996

Electro-Optical Imaging Of F-Actin And Endoplasmic Reticulum In Living And Fixed Plant Cells, Nina Stromgren Allen, Marty N. Bennett

Scanning Microscopy

Confocal and video micrographs of living and fixed alfalfa roots, onion epithelial and pear pollen cells illustrate the architecture of the cytoskeleton and endoplasmic reticulum in plant cells. Fixation of plant tissues to preserve cytoplasmic structure poses special problems. When possible, emphasis should be placed on the imaging of structures in stained living cells over time. The early events that occur when Nod factors or bacteria elicit nodule formation in alfalfa roots will illustrate several approaches to plant cell fixation, staining and imaging. The first observable events after Nod factor stimulation occur in root hairs and are changes in rates …

History Fluid And In Motion., Christine Delea Dec 1996

History Fluid And In Motion., Christine Delea

Theses and Dissertations

"History Fluid and In Motion" is a collection of poems that derives its title from a poem in the first section. The collection reflects the view that "history," be it personal or societal, is created and recreated through memory, subjectivity, desire, and ego. History, and our perceptions of reality in the making of history, are fluid rather than fixed; hence, the reality of history is never still. Past, present and future all invent and redefine one another through our biased human eyes.Section One, "Sand and Stone," contains poems that focus primarily on past times and places, and examines how the …

Chemical Communication In House Mice (Mus Musculus): Can They Recognize Gender From The Anogenital, Harderian Gland Or Mouth/Nose Odor?, Dawn Michele Andrews Dec 1996

Chemical Communication In House Mice (Mus Musculus): Can They Recognize Gender From The Anogenital, Harderian Gland Or Mouth/Nose Odor?, Dawn Michele Andrews

Dissertations and Theses

Identifying the sensory systems animals employ to communicate chemically and the function of the chemical signals facilitates further understanding of chemical communication. Increased knowledge of how animals use the olfactory and vomeronasal systems in order to interpret the meaning of body odors will aid in developing a more detailed organization of chemosensory pathways. The message that each body odor contains can change from species to species.

The purpose of this thesis was to study three previously untested body odors in house mice (M. musculus) for their role in gender recognition of conspecifics. These odors are the anogenital (feces, …
