To Patent Or Not To Patent: Gene Therapy In The European Union And The United States, Nada Jain

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines the role of patent systems in the biotechnology industry, particularly in gene therapy, comparing the approaches of the EU and the U.S. It highlights how differences in patentability standards, such as the exclusion of treatment methods in the EU versus broader protections in the U.S., impact innovation and investment. The analysis emphasizes the need for balanced patent policies that foster innovation while addressing ethical concerns.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Property Rights - A Response To Carol M. Rose’S ‘Property As The Keystone Right?’, J. Peter Byrne

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In Property as the Keystone Right?, Professor Carol Rose examines the claim that the protection of property is an important-indeed, the most important-right conferred by our constitutional order. Although the equality of property rights with other constitutionally protected rights occasionally has been questioned, such instances are far outweighed by instances of rhetorical insistence upon the bedrock nature of individual property rights for our constitutional and democratic order. With the recent collapse of statist economies in other parts of the world, and the attempted transformation of those economies into market-driven, capitalist systems, the American idea of constitutional protection of individual property …

Perceptions Of A Moment, Irene G. Brozyna Jan 1996

Perceptions Of A Moment, Irene G. Brozyna

Theses

The works of art in my graduate exhibition reflect historical and personal influences on my life. The show includes 40 oil paintings (predominately oil pastels) and five watercolors. The works presented are divided into several categories: Genre paintings, Impressionistic paintings, the Boston Series, Figure paintings , Series in White, Still Lifes, the Luminist group, and Watercolors.

The inspirations for the paintings are my personal life experiences and, in some cases, the pieces represent my heritage. Renditions are derived from many styles and artists . However, Luminists, Romanticists and Impressionists are the greatest influences. The show will hang in the Hendren …

A Pcr Assay For The Detection Of Wuchereria Bancrofti In Blood, Min Zhong, James Mccarthy, Lou Ann Bierwert, Michelle Lizotte-Waniewski, Suzanne Chanteau, Thomas Nutman, Eric A. Ottesen, Steven A. Williams

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

To identify Wuchereria bancrofti DNA sequences that could be used as the basis for a simple and rapid parasite detection assay, a genomic library of W. bancrofti was constructed and screened for highly repeated DNA. The repeat found with the highest copy number was 195 basepairs (bps) long, 77% AT, and 300 copies per haploid genome. This sequence was designated the Ssp I repeat because it has a unique recognition site for that restriction endonuclease in all or most of the repeat copies. The Ssp I repeat DNA family is dispersed, genus-specific, and exists in all of the different geographic …

Threads Of Time: Technique, Structure And Iconography In An Embroidered Mantle From Paracas, Mary Anne Dyer

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the structure, technique and iconography of an embroidered burial mantle from Wari Kayan Necropolis on the Paracas Peninsula, Peru, which dates between approximately 100 B.C. and A.D. 100. The mantle is currently in the collection of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City (Accession no. 41.2/632), and will be referred to subsequently as the AMNH mantle. This study will consist of a structural analysis of the burial mantle, addressing the design of the textile and the iconography. In addition to examining the origin and iconography of the double-headed bird motif which appears throughout the …

Microhabitat Use By Gilbert's Potoroo (Potorous Tridactylus Gilbertii Gould) In Relation To Vegetation Associations And Ground Cover, S. Vetten Jan 1996

Microhabitat Use By Gilbert's Potoroo (Potorous Tridactylus Gilbertii Gould) In Relation To Vegetation Associations And Ground Cover, S. Vetten

Theses : Honours

Gilbert's potoroo has been rediscovered 120 years after it was believed to have become extinct. In 1994 the presence of Gilbert's potoroo was confirmed at Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve, near Albany, and since that time the need for a detailed understanding of the biology and behaviour of the species has become urgent. An understanding of the habitat requirements of the species will aid in its recovery from its present critically endangered status and will act as a guide for future management decisions concerning translocations of new populations into other areas. The present study was conducted at Two Peoples Bay …

Modelling The Effects Of Rehabilitation And Changed Agricultural Practices In A Saline-Affected Rural Catchment, M. K. Heller Jan 1996

Modelling The Effects Of Rehabilitation And Changed Agricultural Practices In A Saline-Affected Rural Catchment, M. K. Heller

Theses : Honours

The Bremer river catchment, on the South-coast of Western Australia, is typical of most river catchments in this region in that it has been seriously affected by sedimentation, salinisation and eutrophication brought on by the gradual dominance of agricultural land management practices. Vegetated rehabilitation and changed agricultural land management practices (ie minimum / zero tillage) have now been widely adopted throughout the catchment in response to these degradation issues. This study examined the potential impact minimum / zero tillage, vegetated rehabilitation and remnant vegetation could have on both a farm and catchment wide scale. A Geographical Information System was developed …

New Plays For Old : Jonson's Orton And Orton's Jonson, Josephine M. Wayling Jan 1996

New Plays For Old : Jonson's Orton And Orton's Jonson, Josephine M. Wayling

Theses : Honours

The aim of this thesis is to ascertain to what extent Ben Jonson's play Volpone can be constructed through Joe Orton's play Loot. I will attempt to discover how far Loot can be said to be of use in re-examining Volpone in a different light since the emergence of Orton's brand of comic drama. I shall start by looking at influences such as Erasmus and his particular brand of humour as created in The Praise of Folly, and the implications for comedy that it presents in the form of the mock encomium. The relevance of "not what …

Chief Seattle's Speech(Es): Ambivalent Idealizations And Emplacing The Uprooted 'Origin', Paul J. O'Malley Jan 1996

Chief Seattle's Speech(Es): Ambivalent Idealizations And Emplacing The Uprooted 'Origin', Paul J. O'Malley

Theses : Honours

This thesis traces the narcissistic dynamics behind mounting idealizations of a Native American Indian, Chief Seattle, and his renowned speech of 1854. In my work I draw from psychoanalytic, poststructuralist, 'post-colonial', and translation theories, as well as from contemporary Indian scholarship. I develop my own provisional model of what I term "Narcissistic Drift", providing a means of charting the intertextual dynamics driving colonial representations of otherness to converge progressively with stereotypical norms. Where previous Seattle studies have tended to concern themselves with issues of textual 'authenticity', I build on such work to consider how an indigenous speech 'uprooted' from its …
