Where Have All The Ideophones Gone? The Death Of A Word Category In Zulu, George Tucker Childs Jan 1996

Where Have All The Ideophones Gone? The Death Of A Word Category In Zulu, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The first step in the discussion is to demonstrate that ideophones constitute a word class, a relatively uncontroversial claim for Southern Bantu. The second is to show that native speakers of Zulu do not share equal knowledge of ideophones and how this knowledge correlates with social factors. Measured knowledge of ideophones is evaluated against the social factors of age, sex, education, residence patterns, and rusticity, a parameter to be elaborated below. The conclusion is that just as for pidgins and creoles (Childs 1994) the knowledge and use of ideophones serves as a reliable barometer for language typing and language change, …

Nafta And The Changing Role Of State Government In A Global Economy: Will The Nafta Federal-State Consultation Process Preserve State Sovereignty?, A.J. Tangeman Jan 1996

Nafta And The Changing Role Of State Government In A Global Economy: Will The Nafta Federal-State Consultation Process Preserve State Sovereignty?, A.J. Tangeman

Seattle University Law Review

Both state and federal leaders will need to work together to preserve state sovereignty in the face of challenges posed by trade agreements. Greater federal-state communication will balance the struggle between the federal government's goal in promoting free trade and individual state governments' interests in protecting their sovereignty. Part II of this Comment examines the federalist principles that influence the existing federal-state framework of authority. Part II also discusses the federal government's constitutional authority over state compliance with U.S. trade obligations and whether states have any constitutional or legal authority to demand more autonomy in conducting their trade and commerce. …

The Gatt And The Environment: Irreconcilable Differences?, John Bogardus Jan 1996

The Gatt And The Environment: Irreconcilable Differences?, John Bogardus

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) has governed the trading rules between its contracting parties since its inception in 1947. The Final Act Embodying the Results of the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations was signed in Marrakesh on April 15, 1994. The Final Act called for the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) which came into being on January 1, 1995. The raison d'être of the WTO is to eliminate barriers of any sort that have an adverse impact upon trade between WTO contracting parties. Environmental leaders are concerned that an effective technique for promoting environmental …

Commercial Exploitation Or Protected Use? Stern V. Delphi Internet Services Corporation And The Erosion Of The Right Of Publicity, Karin M. Mika, Aaron J. Reber Jan 1996

Commercial Exploitation Or Protected Use? Stern V. Delphi Internet Services Corporation And The Erosion Of The Right Of Publicity, Karin M. Mika, Aaron J. Reber

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This article addresses the repercussions of Stern v. Delphi Internet Services Corporation and argues that the decision in Stern opens the door to a broader interpretation of “newsworthiness” and “public interest” that will enable advertisers broader First Amendment protections when using “unauthorized” likenesses. This article posits that artful advertisers could very well use the theory of Stern as a basis for virtually ensuring that every “unauthorized likeness” will enjoy First Amendment protection and not be considered as violative of the right of publicity.

Characterization Of Two Endogenous Trophic Factors Involved In Regeneration Of The Goldfish Optic Nerve, Jason Matthew Schwalb Jan 1996

Characterization Of Two Endogenous Trophic Factors Involved In Regeneration Of The Goldfish Optic Nerve, Jason Matthew Schwalb

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Unlike mammals, lower vertebrates are able to regenerate injured pathways of the central nervous system throughout life. The factors responsible for initiating this process are unknown. We have shown that in dissociated cell culture, goldfish retinal ganglion cells regenerate their axons in response to two factors derived from goldfish optic nerve glia. Axogenesis factor 1 (AF-1) is a small, hydrophilic peptide (700-900 daltons) that is inactivated by treatment with proteinase K, but heat-stable. A second factor, AF-2, is a basic polypeptide of c. 12kDa. Dissociated retinal cells remain viable in serum-free defined media for at least a week, but show …

Sports Tourism Goes Sustainable: The Lillehammer Experience, David Chernushenko Jan 1996

Sports Tourism Goes Sustainable: The Lillehammer Experience, David Chernushenko

Visions in Leisure and Business

The 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway were the first ever "green games." The local organizers demonstrated a new model not only for sports events but for the tourism that usually accompanies these events. A good marriage of sport promotion and environmentalism can guarantee several things for tourism: a better event, satisfied visitors and a positive reputation as a clean and attractive destination. The benefits of more "sustainable" sports tourism go beyond major events, however. Ongoing sports and recreation-related attractions can equally implement greener practices, with similar economic and environmental results. Any sports facility, wilderness attraction or hotel would do …

Phosphorous Limitation And Trophic Status In Limestone Quarry Lakes, Dade County, Fl, Isaac Peter Chase Jan 1996

Phosphorous Limitation And Trophic Status In Limestone Quarry Lakes, Dade County, Fl, Isaac Peter Chase

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

While limestone quarry lakes have existed in South Florida for many years, only recently have they received serious scrutiny. A thorough understanding of the trophic dynamics of these lakes has yet to be achieved. Questions have arisen as to the value of these lakes for such purposes as water reclamation, conservation, and recreational use. The purpose of this study was twofold, 1) to investigate the trophic processes within these lakes with special regard to phosphorus limitation, and 2) to help provide a better understanding of the linmology of these lakes, specifically through the quantification and identification of the invertebrate life …

Structural Adjustment, Stabilization Policies And The Poor In Egypt, Karima Korayem Jan 1996

Structural Adjustment, Stabilization Policies And The Poor In Egypt, Karima Korayem

Faculty Books

Structural adjustment and stabilization agreements between Egypt and the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank were signed in 1991. The two agreements are referred to as the economic reform and structural adjustment program (ERSAP). To examine the impact of ERSAP on Egypt's poor , one has to define, first, who are the poor and what is their relative share in the population. The negative impact of ERSAP on the society as a whole will be less harmful if absolute and relative poverty are small in Egypt. ERSAP affects the poor through three channels: prices, incomes, and the provision of …

A Low-Co2-Inducible Gene Encoding An Alanine:Α-Ketoglutarate Aminotransferase In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Zhi Yuan Chen, Mark D. Burow, Catherine B. Mason, James V. Moroney

Faculty Publications

At low-CO2 (air) conditions, the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii acquires the ability to raise its internal inorganic carbon concentration. To study this adaptation to low CO2, cDNA clones induced under low-CO2 growth conditions were selected through differential screening. One full-length clone is 2552 bp, with an open reading frame encoding 521 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence shows about 50% identity with alanine:α-ketoglutarate aminotransferase (Ala AT, EC 2.6.1.2) from plants and animals, and the mRNA of this clone increased 4- to 5-fold 4 h after cells were switched from high-CO2 to low-CO2 growth conditions. The expression of the …

Metabolism Of Gemmules From The Freshwater Sponge Eunapius Fragilis During Diapause And Post-Diapause States, Stephen H. Loomis, Steven C. Hand, Paul E. Fell Jan 1996

Metabolism Of Gemmules From The Freshwater Sponge Eunapius Fragilis During Diapause And Post-Diapause States, Stephen H. Loomis, Steven C. Hand, Paul E. Fell

Faculty Publications

Post-diapause gemmules of the freshwater sponge Eunapius fragilis remained quiescent when maintained at 5°C. Germination occurred within 48 to 72 h following warming to 20°-23°C, culminating with the emergence of a new sponge from the collagenous capsule. Both heat dissipation and oxygen consumption climbed steadily during germination and eventually reached 600% of the starting values. By comparison, energy flow was much lower over the same period of time in diapausing gemmules, clearly demonstrating metabolic depression during diapause. The calorimetric:respirometric (CR) ratio increased significantly from -354 kJ/mol O2 to -541 kJ/mol O2 between hours 3.5 and 56.5 of germination, with an …
