Fish Lateral Line Neurophysiological And Neurobehavioral Responses As A Sensitive Water Quality Monitoring System, Hong Y. Yan
Fish Lateral Line Neurophysiological And Neurobehavioral Responses As A Sensitive Water Quality Monitoring System, Hong Y. Yan
KWRRI Research Reports
Cadmium is a heavy metal ion that can cause deleterious effects on aquatic animals. This study uses both electrophysiological recordings from lateral line nerves and videotaping of schooling behavior to investigate the effects of cadmium exposure on fish. The fathead minnows were exposed to cadmium at a concentration of 450 μg/1 over a 24-hr period. Extracellular recording with a silver hook electrode was used to record compound action potentials from the lateral lines of control and experimental fish. After a short time exposure (24 hr) to cadmium ions, all of the electrophysiological activities of the lateral line nerves were suppressed. …

The Effect Of Aging On Skeletal Muscle Regeneration, Ben E. Reinking
The Effect Of Aging On Skeletal Muscle Regeneration, Ben E. Reinking
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Muscle atrophy and decreased strength are an accepted part of aging. While physical inactivity may account for some of these losses, physically active individuals still experience age related reduction in muscle mass and strength. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects that aging has on skeletal muscle regeneration. It is hypothesized that the recovery of muscle mass and force following muscular injury will decrease with age. The anesthetic bupivacaine, a potent myotoxic agent, was injected into the left tibialis anterior (TA) of young, adult, and senescent rats (3, 18, 31 months). The right leg served as an …

Motivation In Education: Current Emphases And Future Trends, Dale H. Schunk
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This article discusses motivational processes as they apply to educational contexts. Motivation is defined and compared to other constructs. A brief historical account of motivation· theory and research is provided, to include important trends and areas in motivation research. The article concludes by suggesting four areas that future research might address: constructivism and learning, long-term motivation, teacher retention, motivation in the community.
Assessing Understanding In School-Aged Children, Lori Clancy Mckinney, Buford E. Wilson
Assessing Understanding In School-Aged Children, Lori Clancy Mckinney, Buford E. Wilson
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Previous studies have shown that adult subjects can recognize and, under certain conditions, recall material they have learned, but not understood (Wilson & Probst, 1990). Under conditions where the material must be understood to be applied, however, comprehenders and non-comprehenders are not equally successful (Wilson, 1991). Since children's cognitive processes differ from adults', this experiment attempted to replicate Wilson and Probst using 63 fifth-grade students to see if previous findings applied to children.

Genetics Of Oviposition Success Of A Thelytokous Fairyfly Parasitoid, Anagrus Delicatus, James T. Cronin, Donald R. Strong
Faculty Publications
The foraging behaviour of the salt-marsh parasitoid, Anagrus delicatus (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), is distinguished by few eggs laid per patch of hosts and frequent dispersal among patches. We investigated the within-population genetic variability in six quantitative traits associated with this unusual behaviour: fecundity (lifetime number of eggs), time on a patch, number of ovipositions per patch, oviposition rate, ovipositor length and tibia length (a measure of body size). Forty-one wasp isolines were initiated from single parthenogenetic females from three isolated salt marshes, and were maintained for up to eight generations in the greenhouse. We estimated the genetic variance and broad-sense heritability …

The Ecological Origins And Consequences Of Cattle Ranching In Sixteenth-Century New Spain, Andrew Sluyter
The Ecological Origins And Consequences Of Cattle Ranching In Sixteenth-Century New Spain, Andrew Sluyter
Faculty Publications
Despite the dramatic landscape changes Mexico has undergone due to the introduction of cattle ranching by the Spaniards in the early sixteenth century, the ecological origins of that pastroecosystem have remained obscure. About 1521, Gregorio de Villalobos implanted an Andalusian-derived herding ecology in the Gulf Coast lowlands that involved seasonal movement of cattle between wetlands and hill lands. Land-grant records demonstrate that as the colonial economy expanded, the transhumant model proliferated and came into conflict with those native settlements that had survived the pandemics of the early sixteenth century. In circumventing viceregal laws meant to protect native cultures and ecologies, …

Compared with virulent Brucella abortus 2308, the isogenic htrA mutant PHE1 shows decreased resistance to killing by cultured murine neutrophils and macrophages and significant attenuation during the early stages of infection in the BALB/c mouse model. These findings further define the contributions of the htrA gene product to the pathogenesis of B. abortus infections.
Gastrointestinal Motility And Disease In Large Animals, Christine B. Navarre, Allen J. Roussel
Gastrointestinal Motility And Disease In Large Animals, Christine B. Navarre, Allen J. Roussel
Faculty Publications
An understanding of the relationship between gastrointestinal (GI) motility and disease is imperative for the proper treatment of large animal patients, especially as new therapeutic agents become available. However, the abundance of information that has become available in the last 2 decades makes gaining this understanding a formidable task. This article summarizes the changes in GI motility caused by some common diseases and conditions encountered in large animal practice, such as GI obstruction, postoperative ileus, resection and anastomosis, diarrhea, endotoxemia, GI parasitism, hypocalcemia, and pregnancy. Development Of A Defined Minimal Medium For The Growth Of Edwardsiella Ictaluri, L. A. Collins, R. L. Thune
Faculty Publications
In this report, a complete defined medium and a minimally defined medium are described for Edwardsiella ictaluri. The complete defined medium consists of 46 individual components, including a basal salt solution, glucose, magnesium sulfate, iron sulfate, six trace metals, four nucleotides, 10 vitamins, and 19 amino acids. This medium supports growth in broth and on solid media. Optimal growth at 30°C was obtained at pH 7.0, and at an osmolality of 390 mosmol/kg of H2O, with a glucose concentration of 4 g/liter. The defined minimal medium reduces the 46 components of the complete medium to eight essential components, including the …
