Work Of Knowledge , Abner S. Greene Jan 1996

Work Of Knowledge , Abner S. Greene

Faculty Scholarship

Interpretation involves the acquisition of knowledge. We are continually confronted with the results of purposive action. Sometimes these results are written texts, such as statutes or novels. Other times these results are events in the physical world, actions that we observe or the results of actions about which we are told. To make sense of these results of purposive action, that is, to make the results be more than just a jumble of sense impressions, the observer must find a way of organizing the material with which he or she is presented. These methods of organizing the results of purposive …

Atp-Sensitive K? Transport In Rat Pancreatic Zymogen Granule Membranes And Activation By Protein Kinase A., Kimberly A. Lindley Jan 1996

Atp-Sensitive K? Transport In Rat Pancreatic Zymogen Granule Membranes And Activation By Protein Kinase A., Kimberly A. Lindley

Honors Capstones

Pancreatic secretory granules contain electrolyte transport pathways for Cl⁻ and K⁺ that may contribute to exocyto- tic membrane fusion or net fluid secretion following membrane fusion. Recently the granule K⁺ transport pathway was shown to exhibit characteristics of the ATP-sensitive K⁺ channels which include inhibition by ATP. K⁺ transport by the zymogen granule membrane was measured indirectly following K+ dependent osmotic swelling and ionophore-induced lysis of the granule while incubated in KC1 and sucrose solutions, pH 7.0, at 37°C. This lysis rate was K⁺ dependent and ATP inhibited. The results also show that this granule K⁺ transport pathway can be …

Fifth Grade Curriculum Units : Text Supplements/Substitutes, Esther Ortloff

Honors Capstones

The focus of this project is to create units of instruction, of a whole language approach, for teaching Social Studies in the elementary classroom. These units are designed to be used in place of or along with traditional curriculum. They span subjects covered throughout the year in a fifth grade classroom, and incorporate the six disciplines of Social Studies: anthropology, economics, geography, history, political-science, and sociology. This·project includes outdoor education lesson plans, articles, integration possibilities, videoresources, and internet lesson plans. This project is a compilation of these resources designed to help a classroom teacher with effective instruction from various media. …

Techniques For Radiotracking And Biotelemetry Of Coolwater Sport Fish In Norfork Reservoir, Arkansas, Kenda S. Flores Jan 1996

Techniques For Radiotracking And Biotelemetry Of Coolwater Sport Fish In Norfork Reservoir, Arkansas, Kenda S. Flores

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Sonic and radio transmitters were implanted in 19 fish in Norfork Reservoir (12 walleye and seven striped bass) to determine the better transmitter type for two coolwater fish species in riverine and deep basin habitats. Radio transmit ters were equipped with either internal or external antennas and both radio and sonic transmitters had thermistors. Sonic transmitters proved superior to radio transmitters forlocating tagged fish after stratification. Fish implanted with radk transmitters were not found after July while fish implanted with sonic transmitters were located 87% of the time. Walleyt remained in the spring-fed riverine portion ofthe reservoir where water temperatures …

The Coyotes Of The Whittier Hills: Dietary Analysis, Jennifer Mcbride Jan 1996

The Coyotes Of The Whittier Hills: Dietary Analysis, Jennifer Mcbride

Whittier Scholars Program

The goal of this study was to examine the ecological role of coyotes in the Whittier Hills through dietary analyses and field observations. The Whittier Hills were selected because of the urban environment and very disturbed habitat, thus providing interesting information on the urban coyote and concerns over household pets thought to be lost by coyotes….the current study is attempting to identify any shifts in diet over the year, and relate this to previous studies. This study is also examining the role of domestic animals in the coyote diet and the extent to which the coyotes utilize domestic animals. Thus, …

An Investigation Into The Interaction Of Aeromonas Salmonicida And The Gastrointestinal Tract Of Rainbow Trout And The Implications For Oral Delivery Of A Live Auxotrophic Mutant, Steven Michael Jones Jan 1996

An Investigation Into The Interaction Of Aeromonas Salmonicida And The Gastrointestinal Tract Of Rainbow Trout And The Implications For Oral Delivery Of A Live Auxotrophic Mutant, Steven Michael Jones

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Furunculosis is a disease of great economic importance to the salmon fanning industry. The aetiological agent of the disease is Aeromonas salmonicida, probably the most studied pathogen of non mammalian hosts. Little information exists however on the most fundamental aspects of the infection process or the basis of acquired immunity. Although oral vaccination is an ideal solution to the problems of immunising fanned salmonids, poor immunogenicity has always limited the use of this route of administration. In mammals oral vaccination with live auxotrophic mutants has been shown to elicit both humoral and cellular immunity and provide protection against challenge. The …

Oratory, Barbara A. Biesecker, James P. Mcdaniel, Susan L. Trollinger, Gerald Biesecker-Mast

English Faculty Publications

The crafting of persuasive appeals that finds its conditions of possibility in and has the capacity to exceed the context of its production. Sophistic oratory can be read as both a symptom of and a cha llenge to the socioeconomic, politica l, and cu ltural climate of ancient Greece. Emerging out of a society destab ilized by the precarious movement from fragmentation and tyrannical rule toward unification and democracy, sophistic oratory was a force of transformation within the polis. Anticipating the Aristotelian division of rhetoric into forensic, deliberative, and epideictic types, sophistic oratory played an active ro le in the …
