G96-1286 Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome (Prrs) Virus, Angela Baysinger, V. L. Cooper

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide explains Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome--its symptoms, transmission and diagnosis; and it discusses methods of prevention, management and control.

History

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) was first observed in 1986 in the United States and in 1990 in Europe. The syndrome was initially called Mystery Pig Disease in the United States since no known swine pathogens could be implicated. A number of titles have been used to describe this disease syndrome: swine infertility and respiratory syndrome (SIRS), porcine epidemic abortions and respiratory syndrome (PEARS), blue-eared pig disease as well as others. Since 1992, PRRS has been the …

G96-1292 Winter Care For Horses, Kathleen P. Anderson Jan 1996

G96-1292 Winter Care For Horses, Kathleen P. Anderson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses energy requirements, feeding alterations, water requirements, hair and hoof implications, and shelter needs for horses during winter.

As the weather turns cold, many horses are ridden less and less. It is easy to become relaxed in a horse's daily care since they are not being used as often. However, horses still require much care and attention throughout the winter. Often, even greater attention is needed since there are no green pastures to graze or ponds and creeks to drink from.

G96-1285 Dairy Health Management For Optimum Production And Reproductive Performance, Duane N. Rice, Rick J. Grant, Larry L. Larson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Maintaining a healthy herd is a constant challenge to today's dairy producer. This NebGuide suggests ways to increase and maintain the quality of your dairy herd. Maintaining a healthy herd is a constant challenge to today's dairy producer. Each year an average of 20 to 25 percent of dairy cows are culled due to poor reproductive performance or other health problems. Many factors influence the health and performance of a dairy herd. These include the entire scope of management factors from "on farm" activity to the associated business and financial interactions. All of these are controllable but require knowledge and …

Ec96-824 Dairy Economics In Nebraska: An Analysis Of Costs And Returns And Comparisons With Other States, H. Douglas Jose, Richard J. Grant Jan 1996

Ec96-824 Dairy Economics In Nebraska: An Analysis Of Costs And Returns And Comparisons With Other States, H. Douglas Jose, Richard J. Grant

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Dairy Economics in Nebraska

The dairy sector is undergoing major structural changes and economic adjustments. The industry is also becoming more market oriented as government price supports decline. Increased competitiveness has kept milk prices relatively stable, but increased grain and other input costs in 1995-96 have put increased pressure on profit margins which were already narrow.

This publication is a compilation of data related to the current economics of dairy farming. The objective is to provide data to help dairy farmers make adjustments in their operations, such as expanding their herds, and to provide basic data for operators setting up …

Utilitarian Design Features And Antitrust Parallels: An Economic Approach To Understanding The Funtionality Defense In Trademark Litigation, M. A. Cunningham Jan 1996

Utilitarian Design Features And Antitrust Parallels: An Economic Approach To Understanding The Funtionality Defense In Trademark Litigation, M. A. Cunningham

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

In this Article, the author addresses an issue of continuing significant concern to trade dress owners by examining the impact of a recent Supreme Court decision on the role of the functionality defense in trademark litigation. He traces the development of the functionality doctrine in the courts and identifies the convergence of the principles underlying the doctrine with the competition concerns of antitrust law. The Article concludes with recommendations for ways of employing the economic analysis used in antitrust litigation as an effective tool to resolve disputes over whether a particular combination of design features is functional.

Neotropical Bird Migration During The Ice Ages: Orientation And Ecology, Timothy C. Williams , '64, T. Webb Iii Jan 1996

Neotropical Bird Migration During The Ice Ages: Orientation And Ecology, Timothy C. Williams , '64, T. Webb Iii

Biology Faculty Works

Reconstruction of breeding habitat of North American Neotropical migrants 18,000 years ago and 9,000 years ago indicated major shifts in both location and composition of plant communities relative to present conditions. Increased vegetation in xeric areas may have compensated, at least in part, for the reduction in breeding habitat due to glaciation. Autumnal flights of Neotropical passerine migrants flying on constant headings from North America to Central and South America were simulated under present wind conditions and for winds during periods of glaciation at 18,000 and 9,000 years ago. The 155 degrees average headings currently observed for Atlantic migrants were …

The Law And The Stability Of Marriage: The Family As A Social Institution, Carl E. Schneider Jan 1996

The Law And The Stability Of Marriage: The Family As A Social Institution, Carl E. Schneider

Book Chapters

Samuel Johnson once wrote, "It is so far from being natural for a man and woman to live in a state of marriage that we find all the motives which they have for remaining in that connection, and the restraints which civilized society imposes to prevent separation, are hardly sufficient to keep them together." In this chapter I shall pursue Dr. Johnson's provocative suggestion by asking what restraints (if any) society might impose through law on couples to join them in marriage in the first place and to keep them in it after they have married.

But why might society …

Substance And Form In Scientific Evidence: What Daubert Didn't Do, Samuel R. Gross Jan 1996

Substance And Form In Scientific Evidence: What Daubert Didn't Do, Samuel R. Gross

Book Chapters

On its face, Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals was about as easy a case as the Supreme Court gets. The plaintiff claimed that their birth defect were caused by the anti-nausea drug Bendectin, which their mothers had used during their gestation. In response to a motion for summary judgment by the defendant, the plaintiff presented affidavits of eight expert witnesses who offered their opinion - based on a variety of studies- that Bendectin was indeed the culprit. The federal district court that heard the motion granted summary judgment to the defendant, and the Ninth Circuit affirmed. Both lower court held …

Charles Evans Hughes As International Lawyer, Richard D. Friedman Jan 1996

Charles Evans Hughes As International Lawyer, Richard D. Friedman

Book Chapters

In 1884, Charles Evans Hughes qualified as a member of the New York bar at age 22. After seven years of practice in New York City, in precarious health, he took a respite and became a law professor at Cornell. Two years later, his health restored, he returned to his metropolitan practice. He remained there in relative obscurity until he was 43, in 1905, when he was appointed counsel to a legislative committee investigating local utilities. A far more renowned investigative assignment for the Armstrong Insurance Commission soon followed that catapulted Hughes to national fame. In 1906 he received, unsought, …

Performance Of Vegetative Filter Strips With Varying Pollutant Source And Filter Strip Lengths, Puneet Srivastava, Dwayne R. Edwards, Tommy C. Daniel, Philip A. Moore Jr., Thomas A. Costello

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Vegetative filter strips (VFS) can reduce runoff losses of pollutants such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from land areas treated with fertilizers. While VFS effectiveness is considered to depend on lengths of pollutant source and VFS areas, there is little experimental evidence of this dependence, particularly when the pollutant source is manure-treated pasture. This study assessed the effects of pollutant source area (fescue pasture treated with poultry litter) length and VFS (fescue pasture) length on VFS removal of nitrate N (NO3-N), ammonia N (NH3-N), total Kjeldahl N (TKN), ortho-P (PO4-P), total P (TP), …

Integrating Cellular And Molecular Approchaes Into Studies Of Development And Evolution: The Issue Of Morphological Homology, Andrés Collazo, Scott E. Fraser Jan 1996

Integrating Cellular And Molecular Approchaes Into Studies Of Development And Evolution: The Issue Of Morphological Homology, Andrés Collazo, Scott E. Fraser

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Understanding the development and evolution of complex morphological characters requires broad, multidisciplinary approaches. By combining biological imaging, phylogenetic analyses, embryological manipulations and additional modem molecular techniques (e.g., whole mount in situ hybridization), we can address fundamental questions, such as the determination of homology. Many of the novel structures that evolved in vertebrates and distinguish them from their ancestors (such as jaws and the mechanosensory lateral line) are derived embryonically from two migratory ectodermal tissues, neural crest and/or various epidermal placodes. In particular, time-lapse cinematography of fluorescently labeled cells in living Xenopus and fish embryos has proved a powerful technique, revealing …

Rating The Net, Jonathan Weinberg Jan 1996

Rating The Net, Jonathan Weinberg

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Rating systems provide an impressive solution to the problem of sexually explicit speech on the Internet. Members of the Internet community are rightly enthusiastic about the benefits filtering software promises. Those benefits, though, come at a cost. Sites may be stripped out of the filtered universe because of deliberate political choices on the part of ratings service administrators, and because of inaccuracies inherent in the ratings process. If a ratings service is to categorize a large number of sites, it cannot simultaneously achieve consistency and nuance; the techniques it must rely on to achieve consistency make it more difficult to …

Metaphor And Monophony In The Twentieth-Century Psychology Of Emotions, Kenneth J. Gergen Jan 1996

Metaphor And Monophony In The Twentieth-Century Psychology Of Emotions, Kenneth J. Gergen

Psychology Faculty Works

Attempts to define the emotions and elucidate their character have ornamented the intellectual landscape for over two thousand years. Two characteristics of this continuing colloquy are particularly noteworthy: first, the presumption of palpability and, second, the interminability of debate. In the former case, until the present century there has been little doubting the obdurate existence of the emotions. In the second book of the Rhetoric, Aristotle distinguished among 15 emotional states; Aquinas's Summa Theologiae enumerated 6 “affective” and 5 “spirited” emotions; Descartes distinguished among 6 primary passions of the soul; the eighteenth-century moralist, David Hartley, located 10 “general passions of …
