The Expression Of Tnfα By Human Muscle: Relationship To Insulin Resistance, Mehrnoosh Saghizadeh, John M. Ong, W. Timothy Garvey, Robert R. Henry, Philip A. Kern

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

TNFα is overexpressed in the adipose tissue of obese rodents and humans, and is associated with insulin resistance. To more closely link TNF expression with whole body insulin action, we examined the expression of TNF by muscle, which is responsible for the majority of glucose uptake in vivo. Using RT-PCR, TNF was detected in human heart, in skeletal muscle from humans and rats, and in cultured human myocytes. Using competitive RT-PCR, TNF was quantitated in the muscle biopsy specimens from 15 subjects whose insulin sensitivity had been characterized using the glucose clamp technique. TNF expression in the insulin resistant subjects …

Splendid Symbolism, A. Ross Eckler Feb 1996

Splendid Symbolism, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

1 Mr. Bos of Eindhoven read the title-word in Vestdijk's Else Bohler and has extracted the prachtsymboliek [splendid symbolism] form it: in this word there appears no single letter more than once! That applies also to words such as dampkringslucht [atmospheric air] and gymnastiekvrouw [lady gymnast], but it is not easy to discover long words with this unique property.

Phobias From A To Z, Jeff Grant Feb 1996

Phobias From A To Z, Jeff Grant

Word Ways

Most of us are probably aware that someone with a morbid fear of strangers or foreigners is suffering from XENOPHOBIA. Similarly, a person with an abnormal aversion to closed spaces is the victim of CLAUSTROPHOBIA, while others who dread large open areas are displaying AGORAPHOBIA. Many people have an exaggerated fear of spiders, but would probably not know the name of this if it were not for the movie ARACHNOPHOBIA.
