Investigation And Identification Of Key Characteristics Of Successful Camps And Retreat Centers, Gregory S. Owens
Investigation And Identification Of Key Characteristics Of Successful Camps And Retreat Centers, Gregory S. Owens
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis was designed to investigate and identify key characteristics of successful camps, outdoor centers, and retreat centers. The study utilized a survey of selected camps and centers within the United States, in the Spring of 1996. The results were analyzed individually and as a whole. The findings indicated that certain key characteristics did exist and that these characteristics were major contributing factors to the success of the camps or centers. These findings were supported by the review of literature and the results of the survey, which highlighted these major areas of importance: Land and facilities, strategic planning and expansion, …

The Park Place Economist
Mauritius has often been cited as the success story of the 1980s among developing countries. The country embarked on an ambitious program of industrial and commercial development in 1971, when the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) was set up (Reuters Librq Reporr 1995). According to Business America (Craig 1992), ''From 1 97 1 to 1990, the number of enterprises in the EPZ jumped fiom 10 to 574; employment from 644 to 88,258; exports from MRS. (Mauritian Rupees) 4 million to MRS. 1 1,000 million; and exports as a percentage of total Mauritian exports fiom 1 1 to 63 percent."

The Princess Wenonah Legends, Monica Drealan Degrazia
Student Capstones, Theses, & Dissertations
This thesis explores the Princess Wenonah legend and its permutations. From 1805 to the present, the published versions of the legend-dependent on the imaginations, literary tastes, individual whims, and beliefs of their authors-vary in detail and purpose. The more than thirty versions of the legend share some common denominators, but their variations add color to local history and reflect some of the important cultural changes that have occurred over the course of almost two centuries.

The Juvenile Curfew: Unconstitutional Imprisonment, Tona Trollinger
The Juvenile Curfew: Unconstitutional Imprisonment, Tona Trollinger
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
Faced with rising crime rates, many municipalities in recent years have enacted juvenile curfews. Professor Tona Trollinger uses an ordinance enacted in Dallas, Texas, as a framework for analyzing juvenile curfews. The author discusses various prudential and constitutional objections to these curfews, including both substantive and procedural due process challenges. The author concludes that the admittedly valid governmental objectives underlying such curfews do not override their constitutional infirmities.

Neuronal Tracing Of The Cephalic Nerves In The Medicinal Leech (Hirudo Medicinalis) And Their Possible Synaptic Contact With Retzius Cells In The Leech "Brain", David P. Daberkow
Biology
The hypothesis that prompted my study on the leech (Hirudo medicinalis) stated that sensory affernents from the prostomial lip, via the cephalic nerves, make synaptic contact with Rezius cells in the subesophageal ganglion ("the brain") as part of the circuit that triggers feeding behavior in this animal. Several neuronal tracing substances of different colors were used to study sensory and central neuron morphology. First, cephalic nerves D1, D2, V1, and V2 were backfilled using dextran conjugates, and the resulting patterns of labeled cell bodies and neurites were mapped. Second, a Retzius cell body in the third rostral segment …
The Effects Of Temperature And Rain On The Metabolism Of The American Kestrel (Falco Sparverius), Glenn R. Wilson
The Effects Of Temperature And Rain On The Metabolism Of The American Kestrel (Falco Sparverius), Glenn R. Wilson
Biology
The change in metabolism of birds exposed to rainfall is poorly understood. I measured the rate of oxygen consumption (VO2) using open-flow respirometry of four male and four female American kestrels (Falco sparverius) during the breeding season at ambient temperatures (Ta) of 5, 10, 15, and 25°C in air without rainfall and then at low (2.5 cm⋅h-1) rainfall and high (6.1 cm⋅h-1) rainfall. Trial order was analyzed as a covariate because kestrel responses appeared to decrease in intensity during the 14-wk study period. The VO2 increased 12.65% at low …
Effects Of Insecticide Spraying For Grasshoppers On The Reproductive Success Of Three Prairie Plant Species In Western North Dakota, Suzanne Digiacomo
Effects Of Insecticide Spraying For Grasshoppers On The Reproductive Success Of Three Prairie Plant Species In Western North Dakota, Suzanne Digiacomo
Biology
Grasshopper control is often accomplished through application of broad-spectrum insecticides that may also affect many non-target arthropods. To assess whether these insecticides reduce pollinator numbers and hence plant reproductive success, three forb species were examined. Potentilla fruticosa and Calylophus serrulatus were sampled before, immediately after, and approximately one week after spraying. The seed number for both species declined marginally but significantly immediately after spraying. The average weight per achene was significantly lower in spray sites for Potentilla fruticosa, but no significant interaction of time by spray was found for either species. Also, for two germination characters there was no …
Reference Levels Of Plasma Cholinesterase Activity From Autumn Migrant Sharp-Shinned (Accipiter Striatus) And Cooper's (Accipiter Cooperii) Hawks, Daniel H. Kim
Biology
Detecting exposure to anticholinergic pesticides involves measuring levels of cholinesterase (ChE) activity. There are few published values for plasma ChE activity from wild avian species, yet reference levels of ChE activity are vital for nonlethal bioassays to determine exposure to carbamate or organophosphate pesticides. I used plasma samples from 102 sharp-shinned hawks (Accipiter striatus) and 45 Cooper's hawks (A. cooperii) captured during autumn migration to establish reference levels of cholinesterase activity. I evaluated the use of a spectrophotometer (SPEC) and 96-well optical microplate reader (MPR) for determining plasma cholinesterase activity from migrating hawks. The SPEC was …
Characterization Of Neutralizing Activity Of Monoclonal Antibodies Towards Murine Cytomegalovirus, Syed M. Malek
Characterization Of Neutralizing Activity Of Monoclonal Antibodies Towards Murine Cytomegalovirus, Syed M. Malek
Biology
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is an important pathogen producing a wide spectrum of clinical syndromes in immunocompromised patients. HCMV is the most serious opportunistic viral pathogen in AIDS and organ transplant recipients. Once infected, an individual may carry the virus for a lifetime. With diminished immune status, HCMV reactivation often occurs. Murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infection in severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice is a model for HCMV infection in immunocompromised patients. The SCID mouse model responds to antiviral therapy in a manner similar to HCMV infections in immunodeficient humans. A panel of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) towards MCMV was generated. Monoclonal antibodies and …

Enhancement Of Coastal Dredge Disposal Sites To Create Habitat For Endangered, Threatened, And Protected Species, Mary Beth Simpson
Enhancement Of Coastal Dredge Disposal Sites To Create Habitat For Endangered, Threatened, And Protected Species, Mary Beth Simpson
Theses and Dissertations
As human activities and development along the shoreline continue to increase, more and more wildlife habitat is lost, leaving many species with a precarious prospect for survival. Biologists and environmentalists are continually exploring options which may prevent plants and animals from becoming extinct. Strategic placement of new sites is becoming increasingly valuable as a management tool.
the purpose of this study was to develop a plan for enhancement of a cluster of dredged material islands, in order to create suitable habitat for four endangered, threatened, and protected animal species.
Four dredged material islands were assessed for suitability. Surveys were conducted …

Enrichment Course In Environmental Education For Studying Coastal Wetlands Ecology Through The Visual Arts, Cynthia Lynn Hasbrouck
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to develop an environmental education course to be offered to students in grades 4-6 at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, New Jersey. The course was designed to teach coastal wetlands ecology through the visual arts to supplement and enrich the current environmental education program offered by the Institute. Although the course is designed specifically for use at the Institute, the activities can be adapted to a similar wetland site and used in part by a resourceful teacher to suit the needs of students of any age or level.
The course format consists of …
The Canoe As Failure On The Canadian Plains, Norman Henderson
The Canoe As Failure On The Canadian Plains, Norman Henderson
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Canadians mythologize the aesthetics and importance of canoe travel in their nation s development. However, on the Plains, the canoe proved a far from ideal transport mode. The navigation history of a typical small northern Plains river, the Qu'Appelle, illustrates the problems European canoeists faced on the Plains. Key problems included inadequate wood supplies, highly seasonal and variable river flows, meandering rivers, and the lack of feasible portages between major watersheds. Additional handicaps, dangerous in combination, were restricted visibility while canoeing and poor relations with Plains Indian nations. Retracing the forgotten Qu’Appelle river fur trading route confirmed historical evidence of …
Review Of Wild Animals And Settlers On The Great Plains By Eugene D. Fleharty, Charles A. Flowerday
Review Of Wild Animals And Settlers On The Great Plains By Eugene D. Fleharty, Charles A. Flowerday
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Wild Animals and Settlers on the Great Plains is an informative but flawed book. As an example of environmental history written by a biologist unacquainted with the fundamentals of doing history, it fails to offer any theory (or theories) of history governing the time and place under scrutiny. What it does provide is a huge amount of information drawn from diaries, letters, and newspapers in an inadequately edited form. Lacking primary quantitative data, Eugene Fleharty, a zoologist at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, painstakingly provides a great deal of qualitative, albeit anecdotal, information about Euro-American settlement in Kansas …

Tyrosine Kinase-Dependent Release Of An Adenovirus Preterminal Protein Complex From The Nuclear Matrix, Peter C. Angeletti, Jeffrey A. Engler
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Adenovirus (Ad) replicative complexes form at discrete sites on the nuclear matrix (NM) through the interaction of Ad preterminal protein (pTP). The NM is a highly salt-resistant fibrillar network which is known to anchor transcription, mRNA splicing, and DNA replication complexes. Incubation of rATP with NM to which pTP was bound caused the release of pTP as a pTP-NM complex with a size of 220 to 230 kDa; incubation with 5’ adenylylimidodiphosphate (rAMP-PNP) showed no significant release, indicating that rATP hydrolysis was required. With NM extracts, it was shown that a pTP-NM complex which was capable of binding Ad origin …
