The Effect Of Acute Low Ph On Feeding And Locomotor Activity Of Larval Fathead Minnows, Pimephales Promelas, Sharon Ore May 1996

The Effect Of Acute Low Ph On Feeding And Locomotor Activity Of Larval Fathead Minnows, Pimephales Promelas, Sharon Ore

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Lowered pH conditions in aquatic environments can have a negative impact on many aquatic organisms. In fish it has been shown that acidic water conditions may result in altered gill morphology, reduced reproductive success, changes in locomotor and feeding behavior and even death. Juveniles and adults have been the primary focus of research. However, the larval stage is potentially the most sensitive to toxicity. It is also important ontogenetically as several crucial development thresholds, such as first feeding, occur during this period. The impact of acute low pH on feeding performance was investigated in larval fathead minnows one to fifteen …

Striking Resemblance: Kentucky, Tennessee, Black Codes And Readjustment, 1865-1866, Beverly Forehand May 1996

Striking Resemblance: Kentucky, Tennessee, Black Codes And Readjustment, 1865-1866, Beverly Forehand

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To date, the scholarship covering the Black Codes has centered on these laws' role as the predecessor of Jim Crow. Little study has been given to the laws as a whole--the one encompassing work being Theodore Wilson's Black Codes of the South. Other studies have examined the Black Codes' effect on specific states; however, no specific study has been done on the Black Codes of Kentucky and Tennessee nor has any study been made of these laws' relation to the antebellum Slave Code. This project therefore will represent an attempt to show that the Black Codes of Tennessee and Kentucky …

Environmentalism In The United States: An Evolving Perspective, Mary Snow May 1996

Environmentalism In The United States: An Evolving Perspective, Mary Snow

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study is to investigate environmentalism in the United States. The dimension of perspective receives considerable attention. The prevailing perspective by a society regarding the importance of the health of the natural world greatly influences the degree of support of environmental organizations, environmental policy, as well as the direction charted for the future of that society. The perspectives of the Native Americans and the dominant European cultures which arrived in North America are presented and contrasted. It is supposed that the perspective which prevails in the United States regarding the importance of the natural world is evolving. …

Ovarian Expression Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I (Igf-I), Igf Binding Proteins, And Growth Hormone (Gh) Receptor In Heifers Actively Immunized Against Gh-Releasing Factors, W. S. Cohick, Jeffrey D. Armstrong, M. D. Whitacre, M. C. Lucy, R. W. Harvey, R. M. Campbell May 1996

Ovarian Expression Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I (Igf-I), Igf Binding Proteins, And Growth Hormone (Gh) Receptor In Heifers Actively Immunized Against Gh-Releasing Factors, W. S. Cohick, Jeffrey D. Armstrong, M. D. Whitacre, M. C. Lucy, R. W. Harvey, R. M. Campbell

Office of the President Scholarship

Active immunization against GRF at 6 months of age delays puberty in beef heifers. The objectives of the present study were to determine whether active immunization against GRF at an earlier age would affect normal onset of puberty and follicular growth and to determine whether these changes were related to alterations in ovarian insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) or IGF binding protein (IG-FBP) messenger RNA (mRNA) levels. Heifers were immunized against human serum albumin (HSAi; n = 15) or against GRF conjugated to HSA (GRFi; n = 18) at 3 months of age. A third group of heifers was not …

The Influence Of Bull Exposure And Bull Presence On Postpartum Reproductive Physiology And Behavior Of High-Producing Dairy Cows, Milan P. Shipka May 1996

The Influence Of Bull Exposure And Bull Presence On Postpartum Reproductive Physiology And Behavior Of High-Producing Dairy Cows, Milan P. Shipka

Biology

Bull exposure has been shown to hasten the onset of estrous cyclicity in postpartum beef cattle but has not been examined in high producing dairy cattle. This investigation was carried out to examine effects of bull presence on postpartum reproductive characteristics in dairy cattle. Forty-five multiparous dairy cattle were randomly allocated into three groups at the time of calving. Treatments consisted of no bull exposure (NBE), twice daily bull exposure (2xdBE), and continuous bull exposure (CBE). Estrus detection was carried out for all groups for one-half hour twice daily following milking. Systemic progesterone (P4) was determined from blood …

Reproductive Ecology, Population Genetics, And Clonal Distribution Of The Narrow Endemic: Mirabilis Macfarlanei (Nyctaginaceae), Jennifer L. Barnes May 1996

Reproductive Ecology, Population Genetics, And Clonal Distribution Of The Narrow Endemic: Mirabilis Macfarlanei (Nyctaginaceae), Jennifer L. Barnes

Biology

I examined the reproductive biology and population genetics of the narrow endemic, Mirabilis macfarlanei (Nyctaginaceae) Constance and Rollins, from the Snake and Salmon Rivers in Idaho and Oregon. The results of this study provide further evidence for the proposed effects of rarity on plant reproductive systems and population genetics. Breeding system results indicated that M. macfarlanei is self-compatible, but requires a pollen vector for fertilization. Seed set was not pollen limited, but may be resource limited during others. The major floral visitors were long-tongued bees such as Anthophora spp. and Bombus spp., unlike other species of Mirabilis, which are …

Mortality And Behavior Of Prairie Falcons During The Fledging-Dependence Period, Mary E. Mcfadzen May 1996

Mortality And Behavior Of Prairie Falcons During The Fledging-Dependence Period, Mary E. Mcfadzen

Biology

The primary focus of my research was to determine the magnitude and causes of mortality of Prairie Falcons (Falco mexicanus) during the fledging-dependence period. In 1992 and 1993, I radio-tagged nestlings prior to fledging and monitored their survival until they emigrated from the study area. Additionally, I quantified parental behavior during the nesting period as well as other factors that have been shown to influence subsequent survivorship. Of the 152 radio-tagged nestlings, 47 died prior to dispersal from their natal territories. Mortality rates were consistent between years, 28% in 1992 and 34% in 1993. The magnitude of mortality …

The Indirect Effects Of Large-Scale Insecticide Spraying On Populations Of Echinacea Angustifolia Dc (Asteraceae) In The North Dakota Badlands, Heidi Kristine Leuszler May 1996

The Indirect Effects Of Large-Scale Insecticide Spraying On Populations Of Echinacea Angustifolia Dc (Asteraceae) In The North Dakota Badlands, Heidi Kristine Leuszler

Biology

Broad-spectrum insecticide spraying for the control of grasshoppers may have a detrimental effect of native pollinators of western rangelands. Many rangeland plants depend upon such pollinators for successful reproduction. Pollinators also transfer genes between plants via pollen, and pollinator movement between plants is related to pollinator density; thus insecticide application may alter gene movements in a plant population. This study uses a common forb, Echinacea angustifolia, to examine the potential negative effects of insecticide application on gene movements. I first determined the breeding system of E. angustifolia and specifically whether an insect vector is required for reproduction. Flowers set …

Migration Trend And Morphometric Characteristics Of Northern Harriers During Autumn Migration At Cape May Point, New Jersey, Christopher W. Schultz May 1996

Migration Trend And Morphometric Characteristics Of Northern Harriers During Autumn Migration At Cape May Point, New Jersey, Christopher W. Schultz

Biology

There were two primary objectives of this thesis. The first was to test the validity of sampling raptors during autumn migration for the purpose of monitoring trends in populations. The second was to describe morphometric characteristics of northern harriers (Circus cyaneus) during autumn migration in coastal New Jersey and revise the key for sexing and aging harriers captured on the east coast of North America. Harriers were concurrently, but independently, counted and captured during autumn migration at Cape May Point, New Jersey, from 1976 through 1995. All data were standardized to the same 83-day annual study period and …

Clp-C3a, A New Cyclic Lipodepsipeptide From Pseudomonas Syringae, Kwang-Hee Kim May 1996

Clp-C3a, A New Cyclic Lipodepsipeptide From Pseudomonas Syringae, Kwang-Hee Kim

Biology

Cyclic lipodepsipeptides (CLPs), a new class of antifungal agents, are produced by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae. To find novel CLP members, bacterial fluorescent isolates from different plant sources were screened for CLP biosynthetic genes syrB and syrD using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern blot analyses. A positive isolate, strain C3, isolated from a cherry tree was virulent on immature cherry fruits, possessed the hypersensitivity/pathogenicity gene, hrpZ, and was grown in supplemented potato broth. Purification of a CLP from strain C3 was performed by acetone extraction, XAD-2 column chromatography, and reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). HPLC …

Ecology, Economy And Ecotourism: Sustaining People And The Environment, Richard Snow May 1996

Ecology, Economy And Ecotourism: Sustaining People And The Environment, Richard Snow

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Tourism is the world's largest industry. The fastest growing segment of the travel and tourist trade is ecotourism. The concept of sustainable development insists that humans cooperate with nature in the search for an ecological economy which can support present and future populations. Ecotourism attempts to attain this elusive goal by preserving ecosystems while generating revenue for local communities. In this study, the researcher examines the positive and negative effects of ecotourism on people, culture, and landscape. An analysis of tourism data seems to suggest that developing countries, which are popular ecotour destinations, are benefitting economically and ecologically from properly …
