Measures Of Psychological Androgyny In Female Paramedics, Lynn M. Collins May 1996

Measures Of Psychological Androgyny In Female Paramedics, Lynn M. Collins

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine whether female paramedics were found to be more psychologically androgynous than female non-paramedics. The study group consisted of forty-two female paramedics. The control group consisted of forty-two females from occupations typically considered to be "feminine" professions. All subjects were administered the Bem Sex Role Inventory and asked to rate themselves on the sixty (60) personality characteristics contained within the instrument. Independent samples t-tests were performed on the androgyny scores and the masculine and feminine scores for the questionnaire. The results were contrary to prediction and found that the control group was …

Touch-Plate And Statolith Formation In Graviceptors Of Ephyrae Which Developed While Weightless In Space, Dorothy B. Spangenberg, Elisa Coccaro, Russell Schwarte, Brian Lowe May 1996

Touch-Plate And Statolith Formation In Graviceptors Of Ephyrae Which Developed While Weightless In Space, Dorothy B. Spangenberg, Elisa Coccaro, Russell Schwarte, Brian Lowe

Scanning Microscopy

Ultrastructural studies of the statocysts and touch-plates of graviceptors (rhopalia) of Aurelia ephyrae revealed that (1) touch-plate hair cells are present; and (2) cytoplasmic strands from the hair cell bases extend from the neurite plexus to touch similar strands from the lithocytes. This close association of hair cell neurites and statocysts may have important implications regarding the transmitting and processing of positional information with respect to the gravity vector.

Graviceptors of ephyrae which developed while weightless in microgravity were compared with controls at the ultrastructural level. We found that hair cells of ephyrae which developed in microgravity had fewer lipid …

Mammals Of The Mixedwood Plains Ecozone, Andrew Smith, Donald A. Smith May 1996

Mammals Of The Mixedwood Plains Ecozone, Andrew Smith, Donald A. Smith

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Ontario and Quebec were totally covered with ice during the last glaciation. Deglaciation was followed by gradual post-glacial repopulation of these two provinces (and others) by mammals from source areas in the United States. Thus most range expansions were from south to north east of the Great Lakes.

The mammalian fauna of the Mixedwood Plains Ecozone has been steadily changing since deglaciation about 10 000 years ago. During this period a succession of species assemblages has moved through this ecozone as the climate warmed. Several of the larger mammal species known from this area became extinct during this period of …

Notes On Bats From Montserrat (Lesser Antilles) With Comments Concerning The Effects Of Hurricane Hugo, Scott C. Pedersen, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman May 1996

Notes On Bats From Montserrat (Lesser Antilles) With Comments Concerning The Effects Of Hurricane Hugo, Scott C. Pedersen, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

From August 1993 to August 1994, bats were surveyed on Montserrat, Lesser Antilles. Four years after this small volcanic island was struck by Hurricane Hugo (1989), there remains a 20-fold decrease in bat populations as compared to levels before Hugo. After the hurricane, composition of the community shifted from smaller frugivorous species to one of more omnivorous and larger frugivorous species. With the addition of a new record for Sturnira thomasi, voucher specimens from Montserrat exist for ten species of Chiroptera: Noctilio leporinus, Monophyllus plethodon, Sturnira tkomasi, Chiroderma improvisum, Artibeus jamaicensis, Ardops nichollsi, Brachyphylla cavernarum, Natalus stramineus, Tadarida brasiliensis …

Scanning Microscopy

Lectin reactivity in epithelial apical cell coats of normal rat kidneys was compared to that from animals subjected to crystal inducing diets (CID). The aim was to see whether the absence of lectin reactivity in cell coats is related to intratubular calcium oxalate crystal retention. In normal rat kidneys, after a pre-embedding procedure, it was observed that at the ultrastructural level, reactivity was present but that the lectin specificity for the various parts of the nephron might have to be reconsidered. There was heterogeneity between the epithelial cells with respect to the presence of coat material in the tubular cell …

Development Of A Support Group Curriculum: Building Self-Esteem With Adolescent Girls, Elaine S. Korsch May 1996

Development Of A Support Group Curriculum: Building Self-Esteem With Adolescent Girls, Elaine S. Korsch

Theses and Graduate Projects

In the past few decades educators, social workers and psychologists have been examining the role self esteem plays in young people's development and have explored why adolescent girls as a group show lower self esteem than adolescent boys. The purpose of this project is two fold: 1) to research those factors that influence the development of self esteem for young girls during the time they move into adolescence and 2) to develop a support group curriculum that addresses those factors that put young girls at risk. The curriculum is designed for girls age 12-14 and is to be facilitated by …

Graphical Visualization Of Control System Performance, Jeffrey Marx May 1996

Graphical Visualization Of Control System Performance, Jeffrey Marx

Theses

University courses on control system design have traditionally relied on the root locus approach to predict transient system output. However, the increasing speed of personal computers has made it practical to design control systems by simulating their time and frequency responses. This thesis presents an interactive Matlab program for control system analysis and design. The system is defined in Simulink with a user-specified gain parameter of variable magnitude. The gain parameter is automatically varied by the program within user-specified bounds. Several surface and performance plots are produced which describe system time-domain and frequency-domain performance. The system root locus is also …

Impact Of The Soft-Shell Clam Mya Arenaria On Sulfate Reduction In An Intertidal Sediment, Kim Hansen, Gary M. King, Erik Kristensen May 1996

Impact Of The Soft-Shell Clam Mya Arenaria On Sulfate Reduction In An Intertidal Sediment, Kim Hansen, Gary M. King, Erik Kristensen

Faculty Publications

Sulfate reduction and various parameters related to the sulfur cycle were examined at mm to cm scales around burrows of the soft-shell clam Mya arenaria in an intertidal sediment (Lowes Cove, Maine, USA). Sulfate reduction rates were 1.5 to 2 times higher in the inner 1 to 5 mm region surrounding the burrow than in ambient sediment In contrast, pools of reduced sulfur increased with the distance from the burrow wall to values ≈1.5 times higher in ambient sediment. The highest numbers of sulfate-reducing bacteria (estimated using a most-probable-number technique) and microbial biomass (estimated from phospholipid phosphorous content) relative to …

Urea Production And Turnover Following The Addition Of Amp, Cmp, Rna And A Protein Mixture To A Marine Sediment, Mette S. Therkildsen, Gary M. King, Bente Aa Lomstein May 1996

Urea Production And Turnover Following The Addition Of Amp, Cmp, Rna And A Protein Mixture To A Marine Sediment, Mette S. Therkildsen, Gary M. King, Bente Aa Lomstein

Faculty Publications

The potential of adenosine 5′-monophosphate (AMP), cytidine 5′-monophosphate (CMP), 16S ribosomal RNA, and a protein (bovine serum albumin) to serve as substrates for bacterial urea production was evaluated in a defaunated, anoxic marine sediment. AMP, CMP and RNA stimulated urea production and urea turnover, but CMP to a lesser degree than AMP and RNA. The increase in urea production and turnover rates took place immediately after AMP, CMP, and RNA were added to the sediment. The rapid response in urea production and turnover rates suggests that the necessary uptake mechanisms and enzymes to utilize the substrates were present constitutively. Addition …
