In the present study, we exposed rats to a crystal-inducing diet (CID) consisting of vitamin D3 and 0.5% ethylene glycol (EG), and we investigated histologically the kidney damage induced by the deposition of calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals. After 28 days, 50 % of the animals had renal CaOx crystals, of which 60% also had small papillary stones. Most crystals were present in the cortex. The occurrence of these crystals coincided with morphological and cytochemical changes: glomerular damage, tubular dilatation and necrosis, and an enlargement of the interstitium. The number of epithelial and interstitial cells positive for the proliferating cell nuclear …

The Snakes Of The Taunton Local Fauna (Pliocene: Mid-Blancan) Of Adams County, Washington, Donald Edward Walker Ii
Biology Theses
The Taunton local fauna is located in Adams county Washington and is Blancan in age (2.85-2.95 ma). This site yielded three hundred sixty-five fossil snake vertebrae. Of these, one hundred ninety-nine were identifiable to genus and twenty-one were identifiable to species. Analysis of the Taunton's ophidian faunal composition provides two notable accounts in attempting to reconstruct Blancan snake faunas. First, is the occurrence of the fox snake, Elaphe vulpina. This is the only account of this species in the Pacific Northwest. This is important since the fox snake's present range is restricted to the upper Midwest United States. Second, …

Two Problems In The Philosophy Of Mind, C.J. Summers '96
Two Problems In The Philosophy Of Mind, C.J. Summers '96
Honors Projects
The philosophy of mind has historically been concerned to a large part with two central phenomenon of human experience. The first is the intentionality of our mental states, the fact that they seem to be meaningful. The second is the fact that humans are conscious beings. Not only do we receive and process information, we seem to be aware of the experiences which constitute our input and are cognizant and in control of many of the processes which are performed upon this information. It is of obvious interest how we manage to have intentional mental states and be conscious beings. …

Longevity Of Woodhouse's Toad In Colorado, Richard M. Engeman, E. Marie Engeman
Longevity Of Woodhouse's Toad In Colorado, Richard M. Engeman, E. Marie Engeman
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Little is known about the longevity of amphibians in nature. Records from captive specimens have demonstrated life spans of 10 to 20 yr for a number of anuran species, including 36 yr for Bufo bufo (Duellman WE, Trueb L. 1986. Biology of Amphibians. New York: McGraw-Hill. 670 p). Here, we report on a male Woodhouse's toad (Bufo woodhousii) which appeared in 1978, and has apparently remained since, in a basement window well of a brick home in an unincorporated western suburb of Denver, Colorado (T3S, R69W, 530). In the intervening years no other toads have been observed in …

Assessment Of Halogenated Volatile Organic Contaminants In Draining Water In Southeast Harris County, Texas., Chudube L. Anwusi
Theses (Pre-2016)
The generic problem of this paper is a series of studies designed to measure some vital and fundamental information concerning contamination by volatile toxic substances in drinking water. The specific research effort has centered on four volatile toxic substances: chloroform, bromoform, bromodichloromethane, and chlorodibromomethane. These volatile toxic substances have become widespread environmental pollutants as well as contaminants of the drinking water as a result of the chlorination treatment. This paper reports data on a study of seventeen residential homes in Southeast Harris County, Texas. The levels of toxic substances were compared using the headspace sampling method. 1 2 During the …

Ministratores Verbi In Fidem Remissionis Gospel And Ministry In Luther's Writings To 1520, William Schumacher
Ministratores Verbi In Fidem Remissionis Gospel And Ministry In Luther's Writings To 1520, William Schumacher
Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers
The scope of this study is explicitly and intentionally (and hence, perhaps, artificially) limited to Luther's early writings, up to and including the milestone works of1520. It will seek to pay attention to detail, but makes no claim of being exhaustive. We will explore how Luther came to confess the gospel when speaking about the office of the holy ministry. Or, to put the question another way, what happened to the doctrine and vocabulary of the ministry when the gospel began to make itself heard in Luther's thinking, teaching, and preaching?

Progestin And Estrogen Regulation Of Pulsatile Lh Release And Development Of Persistent Ovarian Follicles In Cattle, J. E. Kinder, F. N. Kojima, E. G. M. Bergfeld, M. E. Wehrman, K. E. Fike
Progestin And Estrogen Regulation Of Pulsatile Lh Release And Development Of Persistent Ovarian Follicles In Cattle, J. E. Kinder, F. N. Kojima, E. G. M. Bergfeld, M. E. Wehrman, K. E. Fike
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
When doses of progestin used commercially are administered to synchronize the stage of the estrous cycle among bovine females, fertility is reduced compared with that of untreated controls. The reduced fertility that results from the use of progestinbased estrus synchrony regimens is associated with the development of persistent ovarian follicles. Persistent ovarian follicles develop as a result of the greater frequency of LH pulses that occurs during the period of treatment with progestins. The greater release of LH pulses results in enhanced secretion of 17β-estradiol from persistent ovarian follicles. The greater frequency of LH release or the greater secretion of …

Multiple-Trait Gibbs Sampler For Animal Models: Flexible Programs For Bayesian And Likelihood-Based (Co)Variance Component Inference, C. P. Van Tassell, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A set of FORTRAN programs to implement a multiple-trait Gibbs sampling algorithm for (co)variance component inference in animal models (MTGSAM) was developed. The MTGSAM programs are available to the public. The programs support models with correlated genetic effects and arbitrary numbers of covariates, fixed effects, and independent random effects for each trait. Any combination of missing traits is allowed. The programs were used to estimate variance components for 50 replicates of simulated data. Each replicate consisted of 50 animals of each sex in each of four generations, for 400 animals in each replicate for two traits. For MTGSAM, informative prior …

Diet And Nestling Growth Of Red-Legged And Black-Legged Kittiwakes: An Interspecies Cross-Fostering Experiment, Brian K. Lance
Biological Sciences
I conducted an interspecific cross-fostering experiment to investigate how diet composition and feeding rates affected nestling survival, growth, and gastrointestinal development of Red-legged and Black-legged kittiwakes on St. George Island, Alaska. Red-legged Kittiwakes (Rissa brevirostris) fed nestlings primarily lanternfish (Myctophidae), a high-lipid diet, whereas Black-legged Kittiwakes (R. tridactyla) fed nestlings mostly walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), a low-lipid diet. Nestling meal size was similar for the two species, but Red-legged Kittiwakes fed nestlings at about half the rate of Black-legged Kittiwakes. Interspecific differences in nestling growth were explained by differences in adult body mass. Survival rates and lean body mass did …
Effects Of Predator Reduction On The Survival And Movements Of Northern Shoveler Broods, John M. Zimmer
Effects Of Predator Reduction On The Survival And Movements Of Northern Shoveler Broods, John M. Zimmer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I studied the effects of predator removal on survival and movements of Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata) broods in the prairie pothole region of North Dakota. The study was conducted from April through August 1995. No treatment effects were found on brood survival as both 14 and 30 day survival estimates were statistically equivalent. Experimental sites had higher brood and duckling survival and produced twice as many fledglings per successful nest than control sites. Cumulative movement distance had no effect on duckling survival. While survival rates of Northern Shoveler broods and ducklings were higher than most species of prairie nesting ducks, …
