How Theodore Roosevelt Began The Salvation Of The Earth, Francis J. Henninger Dec 1996

How Theodore Roosevelt Began The Salvation Of The Earth, Francis J. Henninger

University of Dayton Review

Though he himself would have enjoyed and perhaps sanctioned the title of this article, it is somewhat exaggerated. We know of peoples whose respect for earth makes them models for us of the kinds of conceptualization of our natural resources that we must strengthen and propagate if we are to increase the probability that this planet will be hospitable and adequate to our descendants. Those people existed long before Roosevelt. Even in his own day others (whom Roosevelt would himself have pointed to) worked hard to alert their fellow humans to the dangers of resource waste, abuse and overuse. Nevertheless, …

Dixy Lee Ray: A Life In Science And Nature, Janet R. Daly Bednarek Dec 1996

Dixy Lee Ray: A Life In Science And Nature, Janet R. Daly Bednarek

University of Dayton Review

Dixy Lee Ray, in some ways, grew up with the twentieth century. Born in 1914, her childhood coincided with the early years of the mass production automobile, airplanes, and home electricity. She remembered when her family bought their first free-standing table lamp (1922) and her chores as a young child included emptying the "drip pan" of the family's ice box. Fresh fruits and vegetables were seasonal, at best, and viewed as rare treats. In the world into which she was born, infectious childhood diseases, such as whooping cough, measles, diphtheria, and polio, were facts of life. By the time she …

Alienation From Nature And Men's Search For Identity, Brian Luke Dec 1996

Alienation From Nature And Men's Search For Identity, Brian Luke

University of Dayton Review

Nature exists only by contrast with a counterpart. The counterpart to the natural is, depending on the context, the spiritual, the cultural, the rational, the artificial. A human society becomes alienated from nature by defining a nature/non-nature contrast and identifying with or aspiring to the non-natural realm. The alienated worldview holds that the best parts of ourselves are not natural, that we do not properly belong to nature, that our highest achievement is to escape or transcend nature.

Personal Reflections On Humans And Nature, John S. Putka S.M. Dec 1996

Personal Reflections On Humans And Nature, John S. Putka S.M.

University of Dayton Review

Being both a priest and a political scientist, I believe that these two disciplines provide a unique nexus for placing into proper perspective the place of human beings in nature. There have been many theories which have sought to describe this relationship with accuracy, but, by definition, they remain only theories. I would like to offer a brief summary of the major theories, then offer my own analysis of their comparative validity, in the hope that this will help both to focus our discussion and stimulate intellectual exchange during this symposium.

The New Logic Of Hypertext: Electronic Documents, Literary Theory, And Air Force Publications, Gordon G. Geison Dec 1996

The New Logic Of Hypertext: Electronic Documents, Literary Theory, And Air Force Publications, Gordon G. Geison

Theses and Dissertations

Hypertext systems offer electronic links that can instantly join related documents with the click of a mouse. Some observers predict that in the next few years hypertext will become the predominate technology of communication. Such a revolutionary transformation of our culture's basic system for sharing information is bound to have a profound and wide-ranging impact. At this early stage in hypertext's evolutionary development, no empirical study can be expected to capture the long-term implications of this new technology. An exploratory survey was distributed to 100 large corporations to gather their initial assessment of the revolutionary implications of hypertext. The results …

Utilizing Bayesian Techniques For User Interface Intelligence, Robert A. Harrington Dec 1996

Utilizing Bayesian Techniques For User Interface Intelligence, Robert A. Harrington

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to study the injection of an intelligent agent into modern user interface technology. This agent is intended to manage the complex interactions between the software system and the user, thus making the complexities transparent to the user. The background study will show that while interesting and promising research exists in the domain of intelligent interface agents, very little research has been published that indicates true success in representing the uncertainty involved in predicting user intent. The interface agent architecture presented in this thesis will offer one solution for solving the problem using a newly …

The Effects Of Benzo(A)Pyrene And Dimethylbenzanthracene On Cultured Porcine Aortic Endothelial Function, Michelle Lynn Kagey Dec 1996

The Effects Of Benzo(A)Pyrene And Dimethylbenzanthracene On Cultured Porcine Aortic Endothelial Function, Michelle Lynn Kagey

Masters Theses

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are environmental contaminants which have been shown to initiate and promote atherosclerosis and carcinogenesis in various animal species. These findings have been based primarily on the increase in incidence and size of smooth muscle cell tumors in these animals were exposed to benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) or dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA). The endothelium has also been identified as an important mediator in vascular disease and atherogenesis, although the endothelial response to these PAHs has not been investigated. Thus, the focus of this study was on characterization of the endothelial response to BaP and DMBA. Concentration/response relationships for these chemicals were examined, …

A Content Analysis Of Student's Perceptions Of Instructors, Bill C. Cassill Dec 1996

A Content Analysis Of Student's Perceptions Of Instructors, Bill C. Cassill

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In his recent confirmatory factor analysis of the Instructional Development and Effectiveness Assessment rating instrument (IDEA), Marsh (1994) identified six factors matching those from his Students' Evaluation of Educational Quality (SEEQ) rating instrument. However, four of these factors, Enthusiasm, Interaction, Learning, and Organization, were found to be highly intercorrelated. Due to this, other researchers have questioned whether these four factors are really independent constructs as Marsh asserts. Because of the question of independent constructs, many researchers feel that a greater reliance should be placed on the use of global rating items instead of items designed to measure specific dimensions of …

Biology: What One Needs To Know, Ursula Goodenough Dec 1996

Biology: What One Needs To Know, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

Biology on this planet represents an astonishing experiment in carbon-based chemistry which, over billions of years, has generated billions of species adapted to countless major and minor fluctuations in ecological circumstances. In one sense there is no way to generalize about biology. While biological activities can all be ultimately explained by physical laws (like everything else in the universe), it is the emergent intensely particular properties of organisms that most interest us. This essay represents an attempt to describe some of the more prominent patterns that emerge from the sea of biological particularities, patterns that present many opportunities for religious …

The Nature And Structure Of The State, Hermann Heller Dec 1996

The Nature And Structure Of The State, Hermann Heller

Cardozo Law Review

The question of the "purpose" of the state has been a permanent and fundamental problem of all theories of the state ever since Aristotle opened his Politics with the theory of the purpose of the state and placed this sentence at its head: pasa koinonia agathou tivos heneka sunesteken. It was left to the Romantics to contest for the first time the appropriateness of this question and to maintain that the state "just as the plant and the animal" is selfdirected. From that time on, theories have neglected the question of the purpose of the state. They decline to …

Basement Membrane And Repair Of Injury To Peripheral Nerve: Defining A Potential Role For Macrophages, Matrix Metalloproteinases, And Tissue Inhibitor Of Metalloproteinases-1, Monique La Fleur, Johnnie L. Underwood, Daniel A. Rappolee, Zena Werb Dec 1996

Rappolee, Zena Werb

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Publications

Injury to a peripheral nerve is followed by a remodeling process consisting of axonal degenera- tion and regeneration. It is not known how Schwann cell–derived basement membrane is pre- served after injury or what role matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors play in axonal degeneration and regeneration. We showed that the MMPs gelatinase B (MMP-9), stromelysin-1 (MMP-3), and the tissue inhibitor of MMPs (TIMP)-1 were induced in crush and distal segments of mouse sciatic nerve after injury. TIMP-1 inhibitor activity was present in excess of proteinase activity in extracts of injured nerve. TIMP-1 protected basement mem- brane type IV collagen …

"Still Dreaming Of Paradise": Rodgers And Hammerstein ' S Oklahoma!, South Pacific , And Postwar America, Randall Bond Dec 1996

"Still Dreaming Of Paradise": Rodgers And Hammerstein ' S Oklahoma!, South Pacific , And Postwar America, Randall Bond

Dissertations - Open Access

Oklahoma! and South Pacific were Rodgers and Hammerstein's most successful and popular musicals of the 1940's. This study demonstrates their function as modern morality plays for their audiences. Specifically, the two musicals provided Americans with a prescription for a postwar Paradise. This was a Paradise based upon the American Dream of rebirth and renewal acted out in a landscape of second chances. The components of this Paradise are examined in topical essays that consider such issues as Americanism, consumerism, tourism, racism, and optimism. Each of these elements links what would otherwise appear to be disparate narratives: the American West at …

Smallholder Dairying Under Transactions Costs In East Africa, Steven Staal, Christopher L. Delgado, Charles F. Nicholson Dec 1996

Smallholder Dairying Under Transactions Costs In East Africa, Steven Staal, Christopher L. Delgado, Charles F. Nicholson

Agribusiness

It is argued that dairying is vital to future viability of many small farms in East Africa and that high transactions costs for dairy production and marketing limit participation by asset-and information-poor smallholders. Case studies from Kenya and Ethiopia illustrate the role of dairy cooperatives in reducing transactions costs. Analysis of the determinants of producer prices received by a sample of dairy producers near Addis Ababa suggests that different levels of access to infrastructure, assets, and information explain why different households contemporaneously accept widely different producer prices for fluid milk.

The Effect Of Chromium Compounds On The Mutagenic Rate Of Benzo[A]Pyrenediolepoxide In Human Fibroblasts, Yordanos Tesfai Dec 1996

The Effect Of Chromium Compounds On The Mutagenic Rate Of Benzo[A]Pyrenediolepoxide In Human Fibroblasts, Yordanos Tesfai

Masters Theses

Cancer researchers are interested in identifying the environmental causes and synergistic influences of different chemical carcinogens in order to decrease the risk of cancer. There are numerous studies which have investigated the effect of individual carcinogens but relatively few in which a well defined mixture of chemicals have been used. The present study was performed to examine the effect of chromium compounds on benzo[a]pyrene diolepoxide (BPDE) induced cytotoxicity and mutagenicity in human fibroblasts. Cytotoxicity was measured by the ability to fonn colonies while selection of 6-thioguanine resistant mutants were used to study mutagenesis in human fibroblasts.

Our results indicate that …
