Leadership In Nonformal Youth Groups: Does Style Affect Youth Outcomes?, Kirk A. Astroth Dec 1996

Leadership In Nonformal Youth Groups: Does Style Affect Youth Outcomes?, Kirk A. Astroth

Journal of Extension

Adult styles of leadership significantly affect member outcomes in 4-H clubs. While a number of previous studies have failed to find significant life skills differences between 4-H participants and non-members, the reason lies in failing to consider the style of adult leadership in research design. A year-long study of five clubs from three randomly selected counties in Montana used adult leadership style as a discriminant variable. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to triangulate results and conclusions.

Potential For Cost-Share Policies To Improve Groundwater Quality Without Reducing Farm Profits, Thomas Dobbs, John Bischoff Dec 1996

Potential For Cost-Share Policies To Improve Groundwater Quality Without Reducing Farm Profits, Thomas Dobbs, John Bischoff

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act (FAIR) of reinforced the Federal government's commitment to environmental aspects of farm policy that received major attention in 1985 legislation and reinforcement in 1990. All three pieces of legislation placed emphasis on incentive and cost-share policies to reduce adverse soil and water effects of farming practices. A major initiative under FAIR is the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), for which $1.3 billion is authorized over 7 years to provide cost-share or incentive payment contracts with crop and livestock producers for environmental and conservation improvements (Young and Shields, 1996). In part, this program is …

Impulse And Animal Action In Stoic Psychology, John A. Stevens Dec 1996

Impulse And Animal Action In Stoic Psychology, John A. Stevens

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Even in orthodox Chrysippan epistemology, the Stoics believed that impulse can precede assent. Their doctrines on the propatheiai form a theory of temptation, in which impressions exert a force upon us to assent, just as the Academic critics of the Stoics argued. Close readings of De Fato 40-43 and Stobaeus do not actually bear out the consensus understanding of modern critics like Inwood that impulse is identical with, and can only occur with assent. Stevens collects more evidence and sets out the argument with greater clarity in his published version "Preliminary Impulse in Stoic Psychology", Ancient Philosophy 20.1 (2000) 139-168.

Whooping Crane Sightings, August-December 1996, Steven Anschutz

Nebraska Bird Review

Based on observations of the breeding grounds during the summer of 1996, about 170 Whooping Cranes were expected to arrive at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas during the fall. The first arrival (two birds) was confirmed on 23 October. A total of 158 birds (143 adults/subadults and 15 young) were wintering at Aransas 1996-97. As of 16 January 1997, six adults and eight subadults, of the number anticipated, had not arrived at the refuge.

The first recorded dates for confirmed observations of migrating Whooping Cranes were 2 August in Canada and 22 September in the United States. The …

Nebraska Bird Review

The functions and methods of the NOU Records Committee are described in its bylaws (NOU Records Committee 1986). The committee's purpose is to provide a procedure for documenting unusual bird sightings and to establish a list of all documented birds for Nebraska. The official list of birds was last published in 1988 (NOU Records Committee 1988), and has been appended five times (Mollhoff 1989, Grenon 1990, 1991, Gubanyi 1996a, 1996b).

This report includes accounts submitted during the calendar year 1995 and covering records with accession numbers 396-450, 480-490. All records mentioned here will be available to interested persons at the …

House Finches. This species has been appearing at my backyard feeders, 10 to 30 feet from our window, for several years, increasing in number each year. They came nearly every day in 1996 except during a period that I associate with post-breeding molt. Numbers varied from one to a maximum of 17 at one time, with 11 counted for the 1996 Christmas Bird Count. We commonly use 7-8 power binoculars to look for a rare Purple Finch. House Finches are noticeably smaller than House Sparrows and slightly larger than American Goldfinches, and feed with both species.

Males have varied in …

"Book Review," From Nebraska Bird Review (December 1996) 64(4), Hazel Scheiber

Nebraska Bird Review

This book contains 18 essays based on observations Miss Sherman made on a farm in northeastern Iowa six miles west of the Mississippi River, near McGregor. The essays were given at meetings of scientific societies (she belonged to 15) or were published in their journals, and included such titles as "Feeding Winter Birds" and "Experiments in Feeding Hummingbirds During Seven Summers." She was recognized for her knowledge of birds, and her forceful and pungent wit.

Miss Sherman was born on the Iowa farm in 1853 and died there in 1943. She was an artist and teacher for the first 20 …

Fall Field Report, August-November 1996, W. Ross Silcock, Joel G. Jorgensen

Nebraska Bird Review

This fall we received numerous excellent reports from which to compile this summary. Most parts of the state are covered, except the southwest and north central, although many observers at least pass through those areas. A note about details on unusual observations. The new NOU Field Card, which can be ordered by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to the NOU Librarian, Univ of Nebraska State Museum, Lincoln, NE 68588-0514, indicates species that need complete documentations, mostly casual and accidental species. However, we realize that information about early and late migration dates, and rarity in the west or east is not …

Torts, Cynthia Trimboli Adams, Charles R. Adams Iii Dec 1996

Torts, Cynthia Trimboli Adams, Charles R. Adams Iii

Mercer Law Review

These were purportedly among the last words of the tycoon John Jacob Astor as, clad in formal evening attire, he tenderly placed his wife into a lifeboat and, a gentleman to the last, prepared to meet his watery grave aboard the Titanic after it struck an iceberg in the frosty North Atlantic ocean on April 15, 1912. For the writers of this survey, faced with navigating through a record number of torts cases, this scene is rife with analogies. Obviously, asking for a little and getting a lot is appropriate. As usual, space requirements have forced us to make a …

Expression Of Α4Β1 Integrin On Tissue Eosinophils In The August Rat, John C. Phipps Dec 1996

Expression Of Α4Β1 Integrin On Tissue Eosinophils In The August Rat, John C. Phipps

Masters Theses

The integrin α4β1 is expressed on a wide variety of peripheral leukocytes, and functions in recruitment of these cells to sites of inflammaiton. We infected august (AUG) rats with the helminth parasite Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and later used leukocytes from the peritoneum of the sensitized animals and antibodies against α4β1 integrin to localize that adhesion molecule on the cell surfaces after antigen challenge. We found that after antigen challenge, eosinophils, monocytes, and small lymphocytes, but not mast cells, expressed α4β1 integrin if the animals had been previously infected, but cells from uninfected animals did not show expression of this molecule. Our …

Tecumapese: Of Shooting Stars And Crying Loons, Ruth Yellowhawk

University of Dayton Review

Tecumapese, also known as Menewaulakoosee, Shooting Star, was the daughter of Methotasa of the Cherokee nation and Pucksinwah of the Kispokotha or "warrior" clan of the Shawnee Nation. She was born in 1758, ten years before her brother, the powerful Shawnee leader Tecumseh, The Panther Crossing Across the Sky, so named for the meteor that split the heavens north to south upon his birth. Tecumseh's name lives on in our popular culture thanks primarily to the works of historian Allan Eckert and James Alexander Thorn, the on-going outdoor drama Tecumseh! performed each summer at the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheater in Chillicothe, …

Dorothy Wordsworth: A Natural Life, Laura H. Yungblut Dec 1996

Dorothy Wordsworth: A Natural Life, Laura H. Yungblut

University of Dayton Review

Englishwoman Dorothy Wordsworth (1771-1855) could be—and has been by some—dismissed as one of those figures in literary history whose only importance lies in shedding light on another, more illustrious figure, in this case, her brother, Romantic poet William Wordsworth. Undeniably, had we the opportunity to ask Dorothy about her significance, she would probably assess the value of her life in terms of her relationships to her brother and the rest of her family. Dorothy's life, however, can also be characterized as a rare embodiment of an ideal-as the "child of Nature" so idealized by Romantic writers. Her "natural life" and …
