Offshore Constitutional Settlement 1995, H. G. Brayford, G. E. Lyon

Fisheries Management Papers

The Offshore Constitutional Settlement OCS is a legal arrangement between the Commonwealth and State Governments, and defines control over the fisheries which operate off each State of Australia. For the Western Australian coast, the first set of arrangements took effect in 1987. The OCS of 1995 specifies five arrangements, under which the fisheries inside the 200 nautical mile approximately 370 km limit of the Australian Fishing Zone AFZ come under either State, Commonwealth, or joint control.

Regional Zooarchaeology And Global Change: Problems And Potentials, Thomas Amorosi, James Woollett, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas Mcgovern

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Zooarchaeology is a potentially critical tool for the reconstruction of past regional landscapes. The subfield is increasingly being asked to contribute to long-term studies of human interaction with the environment associated with national and international investigations of past and future global change. Intersite comparison of animal bone collections (archaeofaunas) is central to such regional approaches. However, zooarchaeologists have identified many factors of deposition, attrition, recovery, and analysis that might appear to make such comparisons problematic. Using selected examples drawn from the North Atlantic and Eastern Arctic, this paper suggests that, while intersite comparison is not a trivial problem, it may …

Low Calcium Diet In Hypercalciuric Calcium Nephrolithiasis: First Do No Harm, Bernhard Hess Jun 1996

Low Calcium Diet In Hypercalciuric Calcium Nephrolithiasis: First Do No Harm, Bernhard Hess

Scanning Microscopy

Many studies indicate that up-regulated production of 1,25(OH)2-vitamin D3 (calcitriol) with increased intestinal absorption of calcium is the primary event causing idiopathic hypercalciuria. Thus, a low calcium diet appears to be a straightforward strategy in calcium stone formers with hypercalciuria (HCSF). However, the efficacy of such a regimen has never been established, and lowering calcium intake from 1000 to 400 mg/day further enhances calcitriol production. On a diet chronically restricted in calcium, many stone formers increase their intake of animal flesh protein. The latter is known to increase renal mass, and calcitriol levels indeed are positively correlated with renal mass …

A Good Regulation Went Bad: Fractional Elk Graze New Mexico, Brian Thomas

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

In 1989, the New Mexico State Game Commission (SGC) and Department of Game and Fish (DGF) promulgated the first of a new generation of regulations governing private landowner permits for elk. These regulations proposed to provide compensation to landowners for elk which invade and destroy their private property. With modifications, that original regulation was re-promulgated in 1995 as 19 N.M.A.C. 30.5, Private Land Elk License Allocation. The regulation requires landowners to demonstrate elk depredations, and once shown, allows the landowner access to a permit distribution system. Rather than "tooth and claw" depredations caused by large carnivores, elk cause "displacement" depredations. …

Wet And Wild: Why Landowners Restore Wetlands, Jim Pease Jun 1996

Wet And Wild: Why Landowners Restore Wetlands, Jim Pease

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

In the past 10 years, many natural resource agencies and conservation organizations have been involved in wetland restoration. In Iowa alone, between the Wetland Reserve Program (WRP), the Emergency WRP (EWRP), and the Private Lands Program of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, over 60,000 acres of palustrine and riparian wetlands have been restored, mostly on private land. This has dramatically reversed 150 years of decline in wetland acres. Other states have similar stories. What motivates landowners to participate in such programs? We undertook an 18-state survey to try to answer the question.

A phone survey of 305 participants in these …

Importance Of Youth-A Challenge, Holly Davis Jun 1996

Importance Of Youth-A Challenge, Holly Davis

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

As I was looking through your program for the next few days, I noticed that several of the workshops had to do with the future—Perspectives on Natural Resources Extension for the 21st Century, A Perspective on the Past, Present, and Future Extension Wildlife and Fisheries Programs, Extension Technologies for the 21st Century, and on and on. But it is our youth with whom we should focus. It's the young generations now that are going to be doctors, pilots of major airlines, presidents, UN Peacekeepers, but most important of all—keepers of our planet earth. Our future is going to be built …

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

I am pleased that you have asked me to be part of this panel. The ADC program depends a great deal on Extension Wildlife and Fisheries Programs, and your success is very important to us. Thus, I am delighted to have the opportunity to discuss ADC's expectations and share our thoughts about the future. I should also point out that we in ADC are honored that you view us as a customer. Based on our experience, if you don't have a customer service focus, there is no future to worry about.

Using Literature To Build First Grade Math Concepts, Gwyn E. Lightsey Jun 1996

Using Literature To Build First Grade Math Concepts, Gwyn E. Lightsey

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In the last decade, many elementary teachers have advocated a holistic approach to education. Teachers use thematic units to incorporate reading and writing into all areas of the curriculum. However, teachers have often continued to teach mathematics in isolation. Traditionally, the math program consisted of instruction in finding answers to textbook math problems and memorizing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Except for learning to count money or tell time, math seemed to have little application for children in daily life. The majority of the math curriculum was made up of skills, but the language for understanding mathematics was neglected. …

Integrating Art And Literature Through Multicultural Studies: Focusing On Native American Sioux Culture., Barbara Erwin, Pat Smith Hopper, Marcia Kauffman

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The fourth-grade classroom brims with movement and noise. One group of students — Angel, Cheryl, Qwatwana, Lee P., Christy, and Paul — sit at a table formed by pushing desks together. The group brainstorms with the professor the title and content of their story about Iktomi the Trickster. They ultimately decide to call their story Iktomi and the Blanket. The story begins as Paul Goble suggests in his retelling of Iktomi and the Boulder, "Iktomi was walking along." By the end of the day, they have written a first draft of their story.

Living In Two Worlds: Asian-American Women And Emotion, Kimberly S. Gangwish Jun 1996

Living In Two Worlds: Asian-American Women And Emotion, Kimberly S. Gangwish

Student Work

Asian-American women have faced certain difficulties in growing up due to the distinct differences in Asian and American cultures. The two cultures have philosophical differences as well as differences in acceptable manners of behaving and communicating. The expression of emotion is one of these areas. This research study looks at the differences in the two cultures concerning the expression of emotions and how this affects the women who are trying to live within both worlds. Ten first-generation Asian-American women were interviewed, using an oral history method, concerning three different situations. One situation involving just their parents, another involving their friends, …
