Issues Concerning The Eradication Or Establishment And Biological Control Of The Mediterranean Fruit Fly, Ceratitis Capitata(Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), In California, David H. Headrick, Richard D. Goeden Jun 1996

Issues Concerning The Eradication Or Establishment And Biological Control Of The Mediterranean Fruit Fly, Ceratitis Capitata(Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), In California, David H. Headrick, Richard D. Goeden

Horticulture and Crop Science

Classical biological control is suggested as a tool worth developing now for possible future use in the integrated pest management of the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), in California. Three factors that impact broadly on developing and implementing such a biological control program are: (1) the question of Medfly establishment, (2) quarantine considerations, and (3) agricultural and urban concerns. Each of these factors and their combined effects must be considered when discussing biological control of Medfly in California as shaped by historical perspectives on Medfly invasions, methods of Medfly eradication, and past biological control efforts against Medfly. We …

Genome Research And Traditional Intellectual Property Protection -- A Bad Fit?, Kate H. Murashige Jun 1996

Genome Research And Traditional Intellectual Property Protection -- A Bad Fit?, Kate H. Murashige

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Dr. Murashige addresses the need for a patent system more closely tailored to the needs of biotechnology. For example, the obviousness requirement may interfere with using patents to recoup high costs of work when it could arguably be done by researchers of ordinary skill.

Central Bank Of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin, June 1996, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Statistical Bulletin

Financial data is compiled from documents like balance sheets and financial statements, which are primarily designed for legal and administrative purposes. The Finance and Accounts Department uses Bloomberg sources to prepare CBN accounting balance sheet data for the Research Department to compile analytical accounts. The Financial Statistics Office compiles the analytical CBN balance sheet without reclassifications or rearrangements of available accounting data. The consolidation of accounts of monetary authorities and deposit money banks produces monetary survey accounts. Monthly interest rate returns are used to compute weighted average lending and deposit interest rates. Deposit rates are computed for various maturities. Clearing …

Impact Of The Human Genome Project At The Interface Between Patent And Fda Laws, Brian C. Cunningham

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Mr. Cunningham stresses the broad scope of biotechnological innovations. Besides endorsing the need for a new oversight commission to deal with potential social issues, he suggests, for example, that some products should be treated like biologics rather than new drugs.

Wildlife As Natural Enemies Of Crop Pests, Ron J. Johnson, James R. Brandle, Natalie Sunderman, Rebecca Fitzmaurice, Nancy A. Beecher, Ronald M. Case, Mary Dix, Linda J. Young, Mark O. Harrell, Robert J. Wright, Laurie Hodges

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

One asset of wildlife to landowners is the potential but understudied role of birds and other species as endemic natural enemies of crop pests. Enhancing such natural enemies as part of sustainable agricultural systems offers promise for maintaining agricultural competitiveness while providing wildlife habitat in intensively farmed areas. The University of Nebraska has established an agroforestry research team to address interdisciplinary questions and outreach associated with this topic. Included are studies of bird, mammal, and insect use of woody and herbaceous corridors and adjacent cropfields in east-central Nebraska. Uncultivated areas needed to sustain natural enemies of crop pests also provide …

Finding Your Song, John Munn Jun 1996

Finding Your Song, John Munn

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

Planet Earth is a magnificent mix of things that make "living" possible. Delicate mixtures of chemicals, minerals, gases, and waters bathe us. Earth is just the right distance from our sun to provide the energy, driving all the systems—necessary for life—as we know it. Some refer to this as the Great Balance of Life.

How well are these systems balanced, and what would it take for the Planet to lose its ability to create and sustain Life?

We are all aware of the long list of environmental problems facing us. We are also aware of the scientific uncertainties that make …

A Tax Incentive To Encourage Wildlife Management: The Texas Example, Charles W. Ramsey Jun 1996

A Tax Incentive To Encourage Wildlife Management: The Texas Example, Charles W. Ramsey

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

A need for external incentives for private landowners to manage their lands for wildlife was identified and has been discussed for many years. As early as 1930, the Committee on Game Policy (Leopold Committee) stressed that incentives for private landowners were crucial to achieving public objectives in wildlife management on private land. Various forms of subsidies, regulations, and taxes have been proposed, tried, modified, perpetuated, or discarded. Incentives or disincentives commonly were directed to specific practices which impact wildlife.

Wildlife in Texas are dependent upon private lands for their existence. Over 90% of the land is privately owned and managed …

Interdisciplinary And Multidisciplinary Public Education By Combining Consensus-Based Planning And Environmental Analysis, Sherman Swanson, Robert Wilson Jun 1996

Interdisciplinary And Multidisciplinary Public Education By Combining Consensus-Based Planning And Environmental Analysis, Sherman Swanson, Robert Wilson

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

In extension, we educate people to improve their lives. In natural resources extension, we educate people to improve life. Resolving issues often does this. In natural resources extension we also resolve issues to educate people.
As educators we steer clear of some issues to avoid the hazards. We may refrain from choosing sides. When we choose sides, we often tarnish the perceived objectivity of our University. Yet issues provide the need for knowledge, the teachable moments, and the set and focus that translates knowledge exposure into learning. When issues involve common resources, shared or conflicting interests, complications from complex or …

Sustainable Channel Catfish Farming: Low Management Production Through Modified Stocking And Feeding Practices, William A. Wurts, Forrest Wynne Jun 1996

Sustainable Channel Catfish Farming: Low Management Production Through Modified Stocking And Feeding Practices, William A. Wurts, Forrest Wynne

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

Sustainability has become the recent "buzz-word" in aquaculture and agriculture. As Claude Boyd indicated in San Diego (Aquaculture '95), aquaculture is not truly sustainable because aquaculture relies on external feed, chemical, and energy inputs. The United States Farm Bill of 1990 more narrowly defined the key components of sustainability as: maintaining profitability, supplying food and fiber needs, using non-renewable resources efficiently, enhancing renewable resources, and improving the quality of life in rural areas.

Fisheries Research Report No 104 - Assessment Of The Effects Of A Trial Period Of Unattended Recreational Netting In Selected Estuaries Of Temperate Western Australia, Between 1 January 1994 And 30 June 1995, R. C. Lenanton, R. Allison, Sg Ayvazian Jun 1996

Fisheries Research Report No 104 - Assessment Of The Effects Of A Trial Period Of Unattended Recreational Netting In Selected Estuaries Of Temperate Western Australia, Between 1 January 1994 And 30 June 1995, R. C. Lenanton, R. Allison, Sg Ayvazian

Fisheries Research Reports

Gill nets have been used in coastal marine and estuarine waters of Western Australia to take fish for sale and/or domestic consumption since the State was first settled. However, over recent years, as the usage of these coastal waters has continued to increase, and the competition for fish resources becomes more intense, fishing methods, such as unattended gill nets that are indiscriminate with respect to target species, and generally ,wasteful of resources have become less tolerated by the general community.

As part of a push for tighter controls on the use of recreational gill nets, a requirement for fishers to …
