The Frat Volume 94 Number 01 November - December 1996, The National Fraternal Society Of The Deaf (Nfsd)
1991-2000
The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …

As the Supreme Court has turned federal sentencing upside down in Booker, it has left a host of open questions in the wake of that decision. The outcome of these questions is often difficult to predict, for lower courts and commentators alike, as the Court has failed to develop an overarching sentencing philosophy to replace the rehabilitation-focused one that animated sentencing for so long. If the Court were to reach consensus on that issue, it would be better able to speak coherently on unresolved sentencing matters. This introduction to an Issue of the Federal Sentencing Reporter highlights some of the …

Volume 7, Number 1 NEW °3> f\ND VARWIN God and Evolution in Nature by Shayne Zurilgen (Editor's note: The author, a senior in geology at the University of the Pacific, prepared this paper in the fall of 1996for an undergraduate history class, "JohnMuir and the Environment.") Ifred Lord Tennyson was looking into his microscope one day when he was moved to comment, "Strange that these wonders should draw some men to God and repel others."1 Tennyson was addressing the fervor surrounding Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. While he didn't really identify anyone in particular, Tennyson conceivably could …

Nature's Infinite Book: Stories Old And New, Pamela L. Thimmes
Nature's Infinite Book: Stories Old And New, Pamela L. Thimmes
University of Dayton Review
In the next few pages I will discuss the importance of story and myth as well as topics that are connected with humans telling stories—community, worldviews, transformation and spirituality. In that vein, what follows is more than a personal statement; it is a community of voices. My own thoughts on these topics have been influenced by the work of Thomas Berry, David Suzuki, Sallie McFague. Aldo Leopold, Miriam Therese McGillis and Jay McDaniel, so the reflections and associations presented here as "personal positions" are not new or novel, nor do the following pages represent the complexity inherent in any of …
The Place Of Nature In The Thought Of Teilhard De Chardin, Michael H. Barnes
The Place Of Nature In The Thought Of Teilhard De Chardin, Michael H. Barnes
University of Dayton Review
Father Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, of the Society of Jesus, had two loves. He loved God and he loved the world. Traditional Christian spirituality taught him that he should forsake his love of the world for the sake of God. But his Jesuit training also taught him to see God in all things. So Teilhard integrated his two loves by finding God in the world.

CBN Statistical Bulletin
Financial data is compiled from documents like balance sheets and financial statements to meet legal and administrative requirements, rather than economic analysis. The Finance and Accounts Department prepares the CBN accounting balance sheet data for the Research Department, while the Financial Statistics Office compiles the analytical CBN balance sheet. Monetary authorities and deposit money banks consolidate accounts to produce monetary survey accounts. Monthly interest rate returns compute weighted average lending and deposit interest rates, and deposit rates are computed for various maturities. Clearing house statistics show the number and value of cheques cleared within the commercial banking system, reflecting the …

A Slice Of Life: Selected Documents Of Medieval English Peasant Experience, Edwin Brezette Dewindt
TEAMS Documents of Practice
"Since the audience for this text is assumed to be primarily students of medieval history, nothing from a specifically literary text has been included. Further, since archaeology deals in artifacts and other physical remains, it is impractical to supply material from that discipline. Therefore, only material from record sources is provided . . . These are the only written materials that permit some measure of personalized contact with specific men and women from the past, so this gives them a special importance." - from the Introduction

Determination Of Chromatic And Luminance Channels In The Zebrafish Visual System Using An Increment Threshold Technique, Richard Hughes
Determination Of Chromatic And Luminance Channels In The Zebrafish Visual System Using An Increment Threshold Technique, Richard Hughes
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
It is well established that the primate visual system possesses anatomically separate chromatic and luminance channels; these pathways are responsible for the visual coding of color and brightness information, respectively. In lower vertebrates, such as the zebrafish (Danio rerio), there does not appear to be any anatomical separation of cell types mediating color and luminance information. However, several studies suggest that these vertebrates may be able to discriminate these attributes of a visual stimulus. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the zebrafish visual system possesses chromatic and luminance channels. In addition, the contribution of each cone photoreceptor …

Pdx-1 Is Required For Posterior Poregut Patterning And Differentiation Of The Pancreas And Duodenum, Martin F. Offield
Faculty Dissertations
The Xenopus homeobox gene, XlHbox8, has been proposed to be involved in endodermal differentiation, specifically in pancreatic and duodenal development (Wright et al., 1988. Development 105, 787-794). To test this hypothesis directly, the mouse homolog, pdx-1, was cloned and gene targeting was used to produce two separate null alleles. In one, the second pdx-1 exon, including homeobox sequences, was replaced by a neomycin resistance cassette. In the second, a lacZ reporter was fused in-frame with the N-terminus of PDX-1, replacing most of the homeodomain. Neonatal $pdx{-}1\ {-}/{-}$ mice for both mutations are apancreatic, in confirmation of the report by Jonsson …
