Genomics: Past & Future

AT THE END OF THE ROAD in Little Cottonwood Canyon, near Salt Lake City, Alta is a place of near-mythic renown among skiers. In time it may well assume similar status among molecular geneticists. In December 1984, a conference there, co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, pondered a single question: Does modern DNA research offer a way of detecting tiny genetic mutations—and, in particular, of observing any increase in the mutation rate among the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and their descendants? In short the answer was, Not yet. But in an atmosphere of rare intellectual fertility, …

The Chaotic Pseudotext, Paul F. Campos Jun 1996

The Chaotic Pseudotext, Paul F. Campos

Michigan Law Review

This article tries to get away from the traditionally epistemological (and instrumental, and normative) focus of the case method. In what follows, I will introduce two interrelated ideas designed to elucidate the problematic nature of contemporary legal interpretation: the concept of law as a chaotic discourse, and the problem of the legal pseudotext. These ideas will be presented and explored while we undertake a close reading of an appellate court opinion; however, the purpose of this reading is not the traditional one of attempting to determine if the case · is "correctly decided." Rather we will consider various questions that …

"The Profession Of Dentistry:" The University Of Kentucky's Curriculum In Professional Ethics, David A. Nash Apr 1996

"The Profession Of Dentistry:" The University Of Kentucky's Curriculum In Professional Ethics, David A. Nash

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

Among the most important learning that occurs in our nation's colleges of dentistry is learning to be a professional. While knowledge, perceptual-motor skills, and problem-solving abilities are basic to becoming a dentist, helping aspiring colleagues to apply their newly developing skills with integrity must be a fundamental concern. Increasingly, we are realizing that the quality of health care depends as significantly on the character of the health professional as it does on the individual's knowledge and skills. Concern for character, virtue, and integrity is the domain of ethics. This paper advances a justification for including a curriculum in professional ethics …

Integrating Knowledge And Action: A Study Of Leadership In The Development Of Master's Degree Programs In Liberal Studies, Janet L. Littrell Edd Apr 1996

Integrating Knowledge And Action: A Study Of Leadership In The Development Of Master's Degree Programs In Liberal Studies, Janet L. Littrell Edd

Dissertations

Master's degree programs in liberal studies (MALS programs) have proliferated in the United States over the past twenty years. Studying the leadership relationships that faculty and administration form during the MALS program development process provides insight into how non-traditional graduate programs may be developed in the future. The purposes of the study were to investigate the development of MALS programs, and to examine the leaders and followers who successfully advanced the MALS program development agenda. The specific objectives of the study were (1) to examine the theoretical bases and curricular frameworks of MALS programs; (2) to explore how individuals and …

Broadcast Newsroom Hiring And Career Preparation, Michael L. Hilt, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz Apr 1996

Broadcast Newsroom Hiring And Career Preparation, Michael L. Hilt, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz

Communication Faculty Publications

Internships have become an integral part of many journalism and broadcasting curricula. More than 95 percent of journalism and broadcasting programs report that internships are a part of their curricula (Becker. 1990; Meeske. 1988b). The industry's mandate that even entry-level employees should have experience in the field (Basow & Byrne. 1993; Parcells. 1985) has led colleges and universities to help place students in internships. The programs offer students an opportunity to grow in the professional environment, while supplementing what has been learned in the classroom.
