Aviation English: An Introduction, Peter H. Ragan
Aviation English: An Introduction, Peter H. Ragan
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Aviation is a specialized, technology-based area that covers a broad range of activities, from esoteric analyses of compressible fluids, to selling tickets, to getting a clearance for takeoff. Accordingly, the language behavior inherent to such activities is diverse, often requiring specialized uses of English that are collectively labeled here as Aviation English. Aviation English figures prominently in most fields of aviation/aerospace education and practice, in regulatory and administrative agencies concerned with national and international commerce, norms and standards, and in academic, industrial, and government research and development. A greater awareness of the nature of Aviation English and of relevant resources …

Correlated Confocal And Intermediate Voltage Electron Microscopy Imaging Of The Same Cells Using Sequential Fluorescence Labeling, Fixation, And Critical Point Dehydration, Lee D. Peachey, Harunori Ishikawa, Tohru Murakami
Correlated Confocal And Intermediate Voltage Electron Microscopy Imaging Of The Same Cells Using Sequential Fluorescence Labeling, Fixation, And Critical Point Dehydration, Lee D. Peachey, Harunori Ishikawa, Tohru Murakami
Scanning Microscopy
Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and intermediate voltage transmission electron microscopy (IVEM) each has its own particular advantages. CLSM can examine living cells, but is particularly useful when applied to cells that have been lightly fixed, permeabilized, and stained with fluorescent-labeled antibodies for localization of specific molecular species at the resolution of the light microscope while still in the hydrated state. IVEM provides much higher resolution images, but requires more drastic preparation procedures, including dehydration. This paper presents methods for combining these complementary approaches to examine exactly the same cells sequentially by CLSM and IVEM. Cells are grown in culture …

Immunocytochemistry By Electron Spectroscopic Imaging Using Well Defined Boronated Monovalent Antibody Fragments, M. M. Kessels, B. Qualmann, W. D. Sierralta
Scanning Microscopy
Contributing to the rapidly developing field of immunoelectron microscopy a new kind of markers has been created. The element boron, incorporated as very stable carborane clusters into different kinds of peptides, served as a marker detectable by electron spectroscopic imaging (ESI) - an electron microscopic technique with high-resolution potential.
Covalently linked immunoreagents conspicuous by the small size of both antigen recognizing part and marker moiety are accessible by using peptide concepts for label construction and their conjugation with Fab' fragments. Due to a specific labeling of the free thiol groups of the Fab' fragments, the antigen binding capacity was not …

Long-Term Monitoring And Analyses Of Physical Factors Regulating Variability In Coastal Antarctic Phytoplankton Biomass, In Situ Productivity And Taxonomic Composition Over Subseasonal, Seasonal And Interannual Time Scales, Mark A. Moline, Barbara B. Prezelin
Biological Sciences
A 3 yr high-resolution temporal data base related to phytoplankton dynamics was collected during the austral spring/summer periods of 1991 to 1994 in shelf waters adjacent to Palmer Station, Antarctica. Here, the data base is used (1) to quantify the variability in phytoplankton biomass, in situ productivity and taxonomic composition over subseasonal, seasonal and interannual time scales; (2) to elucidate environmental mechanisms controlling these temporal patterns; and (3) to ascertain which phytoplankton markers are most suitable for detecting longer-term (i.e. decadal) trends in phytoplankton dynamics in coastal waters of the Southern Ocean. The Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) coastal study sites …

The article presents incineration tests of silty-tar sludge produced in the wastewater treatment plant for coke industry. Sewage sludges were incinerated in a full-scale multiple hearth incinerator equipped with a wet flue-gas cleaning system (alkaline scrubber). Measurements of air pollutant emissions were carried out both before and after the cleaning system. The obtained results allow to conclude that the thermal utilization of sewage sludge in this type of installation might be just a little cumbersome for the environment, using the appropriate equipment for the purification of exhaust gases. The paper also specifies minimum exhaust gas cleaning performance that guarantees compliance …

Assumptions for regional environmental monitoring in the province of Kielce were developed as early as 1992. Since the beginning of particular attention were monitoring the air. The article presents the next step in the implementation of this monitoring, associated with verification of the location and the measuring range of points to measure the concentrations of air pollutants in Kielce. As a result of analysis and calculations, it was found that the original location is not always correct and does not reflect the spatial differentiation of pollutant concentrations. The proposed changes in the position of monitoring points or measurement methods were …

Assessment of the state of air pollution in the urban area is a difficult and complex task. Depending on the method of assessment the procedure requires a comprehensive research and calculations of air emissions from all sources occurring in the area and the use of atmospheric dispersion models or large-scale implementation of direct measurements of air pollutant concentrations. Both of these methods may also be applied simultaneously to their mutual verification.
The article presents the results of such a comprehensive assessment of air pollution on the example of the city of Nowy Sacz (Poland). This involved determining the emissions of …

The negative effects of the refining industry for ambient air quality is mainly related to emissions of hydrocarbon vapors. Calculation methodology and estimates, the level of emissions from several years has been the research subject of many institutions and environmental agencies, including The Oil Companies’ European association for health, safety and environment in refining and distribution (CONCAWE) and American Petroleum Institute (API).
The article describes the main sources of emissions of hydrocarbons occurring in a typical refinery. In summary form also shows how to calculate the volume of a mixture of hydrocarbons emissions from these sources based on empirically validated …

Farm Families Moving To Town: An Analysis Of Farm Population Declines, Don E. Albrecht
Farm Families Moving To Town: An Analysis Of Farm Population Declines, Don E. Albrecht
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Recent census data indicate that a sizable proportion of individuals and families operating farms in the United States are choosing to live in urban and rural communities rather than on the farmstead. This phenomena is occurring in all regions of the country. In this paper, hypotheses are developed and tested to help explain and understand this phenomena and the variations that exist from county to county. County level data from the 1978 and 1987 Census of Agriculture and the 1980 and 1990 Census of Population are analyzed. Results show that counties with larger proportions of farm families living in the …

Function Of Funnel-Shaped Coral Growth In A High-Sedimentation Environment, Bernhard Riegl, Carlton Heine, George M. Branch
Function Of Funnel-Shaped Coral Growth In A High-Sedimentation Environment, Bernhard Riegl, Carlton Heine, George M. Branch
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Advantages and disadvantages of a funnel-shaped growth in 2 coral species (Acropora clathrata, Turbinaria peltata) in a high-sedimentation environment (Natal, South Africa) were observed in the field and modeled in a flow tank. Funnel-shaped growth serves different purposes in different hydrographic settings. In calm waters with little currents (in our case deep reef areas, 18 to 25 m) funnel-shaped colonies served as 'sacrificial sediment traps': all sediment trapped inside the funnel was directed towards the centre, where it was concentrated. There, tissues underwent necroses, but all other tissues remained sediment free and healthy. In areas with high currents (in our …
Watershed Prioritization, David G. Parker, Rod Williams, Hubert D. Scott
Watershed Prioritization, David G. Parker, Rod Williams, Hubert D. Scott
Technical Reports
The overall objective of this two-year study was to evaluate the water quality in the thirty-seven sub-basin watersheds in the Illinois River in Arkansas and to arrive at a watershed prioritization list to use in targeting non-point source activities. A water quality monitoring program was conducted with sampling in all thirty-seven sub-basins during both storm and base flow events and more intensive sampling in eight representative sub-basins during stOffil events. Each sub-basin was sampled seasonally during low flow (base-flow) conditions and during high flow storm (storm flow) conditions. In addition to the regular sampling, the intensive sub-basins were sampled approximately …
A Social Exchange Explanation Of Participation In The U.S. Farm Program, John K. Thomas, Jack Thigpen
A Social Exchange Explanation Of Participation In The U.S. Farm Program, John K. Thomas, Jack Thigpen
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Passage of the 1990 Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act resulted from the political influence of many environmental interest groups and, consequently, included many conservation provisions. As agricultural policy has increasingly reflected the environmental concerns of the public, farmers who participate in the Farm Program have adjusted their production practices to conserve land and water resources, minimize use of agrichemicals, and control animal wastes. Social exchange theory was used to examine personal and farm characteristics that could affect agroenvironmental attitudes, Farm Program participation, and conservation practices of Texas farmers (n = 1,063 farmers) in 199 1. One in four farmers …
Conflict In The Community: A Challenge For Land Grant Universities, Thomas W. Ilvento
Conflict In The Community: A Challenge For Land Grant Universities, Thomas W. Ilvento
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This paper revisits the notion of conflict in the community and then discusses a relatively new strategy for dealing with community conflict that is gaining popularity: alternative dispute resolution (ADR), particularly mediation. While ADRs are not entirely new, there has been a renewed interest in them as viable strategies for community development and public policy education. Conflict in communities is ubiquitous and should demand greater attention by rural sociologists, particularly those involved in community development. Environmental mediation is a strategy through which rural sociologists can effectively assist a community in resolving conflict Furthermore, as rural sociologists study and practice environmental …

In Situ Hybridization, In Situ Transcription, And In Situ Polymerase Chain Reaction, L. E. De Bault, J. Gu
In Situ Hybridization, In Situ Transcription, And In Situ Polymerase Chain Reaction, L. E. De Bault, J. Gu
Scanning Microscopy
In situ hybridization, in situ transcription, and in situ polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are techniques used to detect DNA and RNA sequences within a cell or tissue structure. These three in situ methodologies employ the principles of recombinant DNA to form double-stranded hybrids of DNA-DNA, DNA-RNA, or RNA-RNA. The essence of in situ hybridization (ISH) is the hybridization of a labeled probe to a complementary target sequence, whereas in situ transcription (IST) is the synthesis of complementary DNA incorporating a label directly on the target DNA or RNA within a cell or tissue. In the case of in situ PCR …
Changing Employment Patterns In Nonmetropolitan America: Implications For Family Structure, Don E. Albrecht, Stan L. Albrecht
Changing Employment Patterns In Nonmetropolitan America: Implications For Family Structure, Don E. Albrecht, Stan L. Albrecht
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
During the past few decades, the industria/employment structure of rural America has changed dramatically. The major causes of these changes have been technological developments which have reduced the human labor needs in the natural resources industries of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and mining. While employment in the natural resources industries has declined, the loss of these jobs has been offset by increased employment in the manufacturing and service industries. This paper explores the relationship between variations in the industrial structure of nonmetropolitan counties in the United States and several family structure variables. It was found that counties with larger proportions of …
