Small Business Transformation: The Meds Approach, Ravi S. Behara, David E. Gundersen Jan 1995

Small Business Transformation: The Meds Approach, Ravi S. Behara, David E. Gundersen

Faculty Publications

In today's rapidly changing business environment, small businesses must gain a deeper understanding of the future to develop strategies that will provide them with sustainable competitive advantage. The traditional approaches to strategy formulation are inadequate in an environment that is complex and dynamic. This paper investigates a "new" approach that helps small businesses "see the future." It discusses an application of the multi equilibrium dissipative structures (MEDS) approach to strategy formulation within the context of a small business involved in medical management software development. The dissipative systems approach can be used to evaluate the critical discontinuities that a small business …

A Decision Making Environment The Healthcare Industry, Terry Ovenshire Jan 1995

A Decision Making Environment The Healthcare Industry, Terry Ovenshire

Theses

This was a pilot study on the decision making environments in the health care industry. A critical incident questionnaire which was developed by Boone & Kilmann (1988) and later used by Janet Barnard (1992) in her research "Decision Environments of Small Firms" was adapted. The questionnaires were sent to 201 employees at the facility in the first sampling. A response of almost 50% was received, but the food service department was only represented by 3 respondents. It was decided that a second sampling would be sent to that department to assure a large enough set of respondents to use as …

An Investigation Into Job Redesign Factors For The Creation Of A Job Enrichment Plan, David Allen Whitmer Jan 1995

An Investigation Into Job Redesign Factors For The Creation Of A Job Enrichment Plan, David Allen Whitmer

Graduate Research Papers

Often, as organizations deal with issues affecting motivation, productivity and the challenges faced by the changing work force, focus is directed at the worker and not the job. Too many managers and supervisors believe that the technology or the task to be accomplished mandates the design of a job, thus making the job design fixed. Job enrichment is a process that can provide an opportunity to empower employees in their work by providing them the opportunity to perform complete tasks, rather than oversimplified tasks developed through specialization of labor. Job enrichment is a specific form of job redesign and is …

Theoretical Framework For A Comprehensive Model Of End User Acceptance, Friedrich Jacobi, Karen Forcht, Faye P. Teer

Journal of International Information Management

Numerous previous studies in the area of user acceptance have proposed several models of user acceptance. These studies have each investigated different components of the user acceptance model. No significant research has been accomplished to combine factors which influence user acceptance into one overall model, which then could be subject of further validation. The purpose of this paper is to provide the foundation for a comprehensive model of user acceptance by building a theoretical framework that brings together individual models of user acceptance.

Leading Change In The Healthcare Industry : Sentara Health Systems, Norfolk, Virginia, Heather S. Heitz

Honors Theses

After going through the steps of implementing a change in Sentara Health Systems, I learned that using my visionary and participatory leadership skills contributed to my success in leading a change in the organization. First, I used my visionary leadership skills to encourage each individual to envision processes, to support each other, and to use resources which would motivate the group to do something that they wanted to do. Also, I used a participatory leadership to ensure that the subordinates were involved in the group's goals throughout the change process. By empowering people to have responsibility when changes are made …

Easing The Regulation Of A Pan-European Securities Market: Applying The Recommendations Of The Rudman Report To Easdaq, Maria A. Volarich

Fordham International Law Journal

This Note argues that the EASD should implement suggestions offered in the Rudman Report for Nasdaq because the success of EASDAQ depends on maintaining the trust of all its constituencies in the fair operation of the market. Part I discusses the development of the current regulatory structures of the US and EU securities markets. Part II examines the Rudman Report and the arguments of those who criticize and praise it. Part III argues that the Rudman Report's recommendations should be adopted by EASDAQ, because EASDAQ models itself on Nasdaq, and therefore will encounter the same criticisms of self-dealing and conflicts …

Improving Teaching Across The Academy: Gleanings From Research, Ben Ward

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The field of faculty development is at least thirty years old, and although we have learned many things about improving teaching skills during that time, we have not developed many definitive answers to the larger questions of our craft; e.g., how do we raise the status and quality of teaching across an entire institution? This article surveys the research literature to ascertain what we do know about these questions, with the hope that it will stimulate a dialogue among faculty developers that will yield a fuller understanding of these broad issues.

A Brief Discussion Of The History, Role, And Function Of The School Psychologist In The Former Soviet Union And Russia, Todd W. Knutson

Masters Theses

School psychology in the former Soviet Union and Russia had its beginnings as the field of Pedology which thrived in the early 1900s in Europe and in the former Soviet Union. School psychological services, in Western psychometric sense, have been virtually dormant since Pedology's downfall following ideological conflicts with Communist leaders in 1936 when standardized testing was banned in the U.S.S.R. This paper sketches a brief history of school psychology in the former Soviet Union and Russia, outlines the educational system, reviews the Soviet research on mental retardation, and calls for the sharing of general information related to international school …
