The Institutionalization Of Change In A Restructured High School: A Case Study, Roy L Hoyt Jan 1995

The Institutionalization Of Change In A Restructured High School: A Case Study, Roy L Hoyt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This case study described the restructuring process of Dixie High School, one of 10 schools in a restructuring consortium in Utah. The Utah State Office of Education established the consortium in 1990 and supported it by providing seed money and the opportunity to reevaluate state requirements. The study delineated the change process at this school from 1991-93, as it moved from a traditional organizational structure to a site-based management model. This study also examined how the school brought about change to enhance student learning and create a collaborative school culture. In addition, this analysis investigated the changes in roles and …

Analysis Of The Case Writing Method For College Teaching, Rebecca Lutte, Brent D. Bowen

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a quantitative analysis of students' perspective of the case writing methodology. The case method of teaching is widely used at all levels as an effective, nontraditional means of teaching. Case writing as an entire semester course, a new pedagogical style, has now emerged as an additional means of using the case method. The case writing methodology was implemented at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and Wichita State University (WSU). This paper will provide a brief overview of how the case writing method was applied as a full …

An Organizational Learning Approach To Domain Analysis, Scott Henninger, Kris Lappala, Anand Raghavendran Jan 1995

An Organizational Learning Approach To Domain Analysis, Scott Henninger, Kris Lappala, Anand Raghavendran

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

As the application of computer technology continues to proliferate and diversify, the identification and understanding of application domains is becoming increasingly important to software development methodologies. Domain analysis techniques have been developed to accumulate and formalize the knowledge necessary for successful software reuse. These techniques have been shown to be useful, but suffer from defining the domain too restrictively, burying important relationships deep in domain taxonomies, and prohibiting flexible identification of domains with common issues. Techniques are needed that dynamically detect recurring patterns of activities in development projects. This paper presents a method for developing and refining the knowledge and …

Transition To Parenthood: The Effect Of Division Of Labor Discrepancies On Marital Satisfaction, Alison Paige Done Jan 1995

Transition To Parenthood: The Effect Of Division Of Labor Discrepancies On Marital Satisfaction, Alison Paige Done

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In a longitudinal study of couples during the transition to first time parenthood, I examined several hypotheses regarding expectations and the division of labor between spouses. Seventy couples expecting the birth of their first baby filled out questionnaires late in pregnancy and three months postpartum. Before the birth of their babies an experimental group participated in a marital skills training workshop. Results indicated that husbands' and wives' expectations about the post-birth division of labor differed significantly from actual post-birth division of labor. This discrepancy affected marital satisfaction for wives but not for their husbands. The discrepancy also affected spouses' satisfaction …

Character Of Employment And Wrongful Dismissal Notice: Cronk V. Canadian General Insurance Co., Griffith Roberts Jan 1995

Character Of Employment And Wrongful Dismissal Notice: Cronk V. Canadian General Insurance Co., Griffith Roberts

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

In Cronk v. Canadian General Insurance Co., MacPherson J., of the Ontario Court of Justice, broke with precedent. Before Cronk, courts have consistently held that higher ranking employees – ones with more responsibilities, more education, more skills – are entitled to significantly longer notice periods than those employees with less valued skills. However, while character of employment has traditionally been viewed as an important consideration in calculating what qualifies as reasonable notice on termination of a contract of employment, MacPherson J. held that character of employment could not be used to reduce the award for a lower ranking, lesser skilled …

Clinical Law Review

This is a story of change so sudden that it surprised even those who most fervently sought it. For nearly a decade, Seattle University School of Law has offered an extensive typical skills curriculum. All students are involved in an intensive two year writing program. The simulated Comprehensive Pretrial and Trial Advocacy Program trains over 150 students a year, while in the Law Practice Clinic, 60 students a year represent domestic and criminal clients. Course offerings such as ADR, Negotiations, and Appellate Advocacy, along with judicial and public service externships and an array of student competitions, fill out the lawyering …

The Clinical Sociologist As A Boundary Manager: The Case Of University Administration, John G. Bruhn, Alan P. Chesney Jan 1995

The Clinical Sociologist As A Boundary Manager: The Case Of University Administration, John G. Bruhn, Alan P. Chesney

Clinical Sociology Review

Managing conflicts at the interfaces or boundaries at the individual, group and organizational levels is an essential part of the job of a university administrator. As universities become subject to increasing external pressures, especially financial, administrators are called upon to reorganize, restructure and reallocate resources. These interventions substantially challenge academic administrators and the clinical sociologists who occupy these roles to utilize their skills as conflict and risk managers. This paper describes and discusses the experiences and observations of the authors as boundary managers in university settings.

The Effects Of Gender, National Origin, Purpose Of Travel, Length Of Stay And Seasonality On Guest's Satisfaction Levels, Brenda Cruz Valentin Jan 1995

The Effects Of Gender, National Origin, Purpose Of Travel, Length Of Stay And Seasonality On Guest's Satisfaction Levels, Brenda Cruz Valentin

Theses

This study focuses on identifying the effects of customer's gender, national origin, purpose of travel, length of stay, and seasonality on their perception of service at an international hotel in the Caribbean.

Assessing customer's expectations through collection and analysis of comment cards are critical to assure a high quality delivery of service. Therefore, the problem is that statistical analysis and effective use of customer comment cards, which are designed to identify potential complaining patterns in order to improve service for an international hotel, does not occur.

This study involved an analysis of a sample of 57.2% out of a total …

Development Of A Participative Approach To Guide Organizational Change: Reviewing The Sawtooth Technique, Port Robert Martin Edd

Dissertations

In a world economy that bears scant resemblance to the one dominated by the United States following World War II, many American companies have found it increasingly difficult to keep pace with their foreign competitors. The public sector, too, has found itself under significant pressure to provide needed services but with significantly reduced resources. In each individual case leaders have been seeking new solutions to both old and new problems, and organizations have been faced with change and its impacts. The purpose of this study was to design a methodology that could be used to structure organizational changes in such …

Participative Leadership: A Study Of Faculty And Administrators In A Lutheran Liberal Arts College, Tekeste Teclu Jan 1995

Participative Leadership: A Study Of Faculty And Administrators In A Lutheran Liberal Arts College, Tekeste Teclu

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Despite the numerous reference to and importance of the term "participative leadership" in various leadership and organizational theories and practices, the term itself remains ambiguous. While it is often used synonymously with terms such as collaborative, autonomy, influence, participative decision making, collegiality, and team, many people questioned whether these terms are truly synonymous. Moreover, because those who advocate this approach to leadership have many purposes in mind, the practice of participative leadership manifests itself in different forms. Hence, a need exists to clarify as to what practices are actually participative.

This study examines the meaning of the concept in theory …
