Taking It To The Streets: Putting Discourse Analysis To The Service Of A Public Defender's Office, Clark D. Cunningham, Bonnie S. Mcelhinny

Clinical Law Review

This working paper describes a project initiated at Washington University in March 1995 to analyze and improve the way lawyers interview clients. Although this project is informed by the increasingly rich literature on attorney-client discourse, it will differ from any previous work of which we are aware. In particular, although our project design has been greatly assisted by the thorough and thoughtful report of an interdisciplinary study of attorney-client interviews at the District of Columbia Law School by Gay Gellhorn, Lynne Robins and Pat Roth in a recent issue of the Clinical Law Review (hereafter referred to as "the DC …

Recent work by anthropologists, folklorists, and semioticians has made significant strides in our understanding of the dynamics and poetics of spoken utterances. Such work has been motivated, generally, by the goal of understanding verbal expression in terms of its own unique structures and expressive modalities. The following paper will contribute to this line of inquiry. It offers an analysis of a form of expression, sound symbolism, that is widely used by people whose languages have not been written down. The main advantage of this analysis is that it rescues sound symbolism from the irrational abyss into which it has often …

Interviewing Clients: A Linguistic Comparison Of The "Traditional" Interview And The "Client-Centered" Interview, Linda F. Smith Jan 1995

Interviewing Clients: A Linguistic Comparison Of The "Traditional" Interview And The "Client-Centered" Interview, Linda F. Smith

Clinical Law Review

During the past quarter century, new ideas have evolved about how professionals should treat their clients and patients. Beginning in the 1950s, professionals in various fields increasingly questioned the long-held assumption that professionals have the right to control their clients or patients in the interest of serving them. Some mental health professionals promoted a participatory or collaborative approach, arguing that effective psychotherapy requires active acceptance and assumption of personal responsibility by the patient. In his influential book, Lawyer and Client: Who's in Charge?, Douglas Rosenthal drew on the burgeoning literature in the social sciences to critically examine the traditional attorney-client …

Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, And Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Michael Stoeber Jan 1995

Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, And Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Michael Stoeber

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In the late summer of 1993, representatives of the major religions of the world met in interfaith dialogue in Chicago, to celebrate the centenary of the 1893 World's Parliament of Religions. The 1893 Parliament was remarkable, both in its magnitude and its purpose: it brought together forty-one denominations and over four hundred men and women in a forum of mutual teaching and learning. That is to say, its formal purpose was reciprocal dialogue, something rather unusual for the 19th century, when interfaith preoccupations of the time still normally focused on proselytism.

The Ufo Contact Movement From The 1950'S To The Present, Christoper Bader

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

"Since the beginning of the UFO movement in the late 1940s, beliefs about what the aliens are like and the purpose of their visits to Earth have changed numerous times. The first claims of extended contact with alien beings in the early 1950s were entirely different in form and content from the current, frightening UFO abduction tales. This article will trace the UFO movement from its origin in 1947 to the present, explaining how its prevailing paradigms have changed."

The Name Israel And Related Expressions In The Books Of Amos And Hosea, Ganoune Diop

Dissertations

This study provides an investigation of the occurrences of the designation "Israel," the related names "Judah," "Jacob," "Joseph," "Isaac," "David," "Ephraim," and their combinations in the books of Amos and Hosea in order to find out their referents and the reasons for their usages. Chapter 1 provides a statement of the problem, pointing out the considerable divergence of opinions regarding the etymology, origin, and usage of the designation "Israel." Chapter 2 begins with a review of etymological and historical points of view in order to provide a background for the study. Then follows a review of the literature that addresses …

The Pueblo Region As A Linguistic Area: Diffusion Among The Indigenous Languages Of The Southwest United States., Catherine Bereznak Jan 1995

The Pueblo Region As A Linguistic Area: Diffusion Among The Indigenous Languages Of The Southwest United States., Catherine Bereznak

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal of this dissertation is to investigate whether the Pueblo region of the Southwest United States is a legitimate linguistic area (LA). The Pueblo region has long been recognized as a cohesive culture area, but an in-depth examination of the Pueblo region as a linguistic area has not previously been done. Because a linguistic area is by definition an area in which linguistic features have spread through diffusion, traits which are widespread for other reasons (e.g., genetic inheritance or independent parallel development) must be eliminated as evidence for a Pueblo LA. The methodological approach which I adopt emphasizes the …

Louisiana's Cajun Prairie: Holocene History Of A Southern Grassland., Miriam Lee Fearn Jan 1995

Louisiana's Cajun Prairie: Holocene History Of A Southern Grassland., Miriam Lee Fearn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Pollen, phytolith, charcoal, and diatom analysis, in conjunction with sediment stratigraphy and radiocarbon dating, of sediment cores from Lake Arthur and Prien Lake, estuaries in southwestern Louisiana, provide 6000 years of data used to reconstruct the late-Holocene vegetation history of Louisiana's natural prairie and to define coastal processes which affected the sites. The Cajun Prairie is a grassland outlier in a climate which normally supports forest. Poorly drained, impermeable soils with poor water yielding capability induce summer drought severe enough to limit the success of trees, resulting in a natural tallgrass prairie. Pollen, phytoliths, and charcoal suggest that the grassland …

Text And Context Of The Suwo': Bribri Oral Tradition., Carla Victoria Jara Jan 1995

Text And Context Of The Suwo': Bribri Oral Tradition., Carla Victoria Jara

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation comprises the analysis of six extensive texts in Bribri, a Chibchan language spoken in Costa Rica, Central America. The theoretical framework is based mainly on M.A.K. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan's social-semiotic perspective of text analysis and on Joseph Grimes' analysis of discourse. In order to characterize this genre within its context of discourse, the three components of context, i.e., field, tenor and mode, have been defined for the corpus of texts. To determine how texture and structure, the basic properties of text, are displayed, one text is analyzed in detail and the results are compared with the other …
