Domestic Partnership: Recognition And Responsibility, Raymond C. O'Brien Jan 1995

Domestic Partnership: Recognition And Responsibility, Raymond C. O'Brien

Scholarly Articles

A domestic partnership is a business or political recognition of two adults seeking to share benefits normally conferred upon married couples. To date, partnerships have conferred benefits only; the most logical progression is for partnerships to include responsibilities of support, commitment and obligation within the economic partnership construct of emerging family law. When this occurs, heterosexual couples may lack incentive, but homosexual couples will achieve surer due process recognition regardless of same-sex marriage litigation.

Race And Myth: The Spanish Gypsy, Brenda Mckay Jan 1995

Race And Myth: The Spanish Gypsy, Brenda Mckay

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

Although it cannot be claimed that George Eliot's poetry ranks with her prose fiction, it is nevertheless unjustifiably marginalized in discussion of her work. Among the more distinguished pieces - which include the important blank-verse drama 'Armgart' - is George Eliot's longest excursus into poetry, The Spanish Gypsy. Set in Spain, this drama is the spiritual background of themes later developed in Daniel Deronda, on the nature of racial inter-relationships. In Romola too, Eliot had shown an interest in exploring a culture different from that of England, but also sharing many points of resemblance with that country. The medium of …

Review Of Yanktonai Sioux Water Colors: Cultural Remembrances Of John Saul By Martin Brokenleg And Herbert T. Hoover, Mary Jane Schneider Jan 1995

Review Of Yanktonai Sioux Water Colors: Cultural Remembrances Of John Saul By Martin Brokenleg And Herbert T. Hoover, Mary Jane Schneider

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Unfortunately Yanktonai Sioux Water Colors is not what it could be. People unfamiliar with Plains Indian culture will not know how to interpret the water colors and the comments are not sufficiently detailed to overcome this problem. In 1971 James Howard published descriptions of some of the water colors in the Oklahoma Anthropological Society Newsletter. Howard combined a thorough knowledge of traditional Plains Indian culture with interviews with John Saul to give the average reader a good understanding of the paintings. Some other problems will be noticeable only to the professional. Although several people are given credit for the book …

Review Of Nebraskaland Magazine's The Cellars Of Time: Paleontology And Archaeology In Nebraska Vol. 72 No.1; January/February 1994. Lincoln: Nebraska Game And Parks Commission, Luann Wandsnider

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Nebraska is blessed with amazing and bountiful, and often unheralded, fossil and artifact resources. No Great Plains library is complete without this volume, which does a wonderful job of proclaiming this rich heritage. For Nebraska archaeology, it represents the only current source that is accessible and engaging. Students of paleontology will be similarly entranced and enlightened. NEBRASKAland and Nebraska History are to be congratulated.

Review Of The Sioux And Other Native American Cultures Of The Dakotas: An Annotated Bibliography Compiled By Herbert T. Hoover And Karen P. Zimmerman, Steve Potts Jan 1995

Review Of The Sioux And Other Native American Cultures Of The Dakotas: An Annotated Bibliography Compiled By Herbert T. Hoover And Karen P. Zimmerman, Steve Potts

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This volume is an excellent supplement to Hoover and Jack Marken's 1980 Bibliography of the Sioux, and the two volumes can be used together for a thorough treatment of the Sioux. The title of this volume, however, is somewhat misleading. Material related to Sioux origins in Minnesota is included and recent materials on the Arikara, Hidatsa, Mandan, and Ojibway are omitted; after the first chapter, most annotations are on the Sioux. The authors note in their introduction that this volume complements South Dakota History, a 1993 bibliography of the state's history, and the two volumes share a common …

The Front .. Gabled Log Cabin And The Role Of The Great Plains In The Formation Of The Mountain West's Built Landscape, Jon T. Kilpinen Jan 1995

The Front .. Gabled Log Cabin And The Role Of The Great Plains In The Formation Of The Mountain West's Built Landscape, Jon T. Kilpinen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Students of American material culture have often viewed the arid, largely treeless Great Plains as an innovative source region of various aspects of western culture, especially those that gained expression on the landscape. While barbed wire and sod construction are two familiar examples, another exists in the front-gabled log dwelling, the dominant traditional building form of the Mountain and Inter-mountain Western frontier. Because the front-gabled log dwelling was indeed common on the Plains and reputedly absent in the forested, eastern United States, scholars have identified the Great Plains as the source region of this vernacular floorplan. Recent field and secondary …

Review Of The Political Economy Of North American Indians Edited By John H. Moore, Larry Burt Jan 1995

Review Of The Political Economy Of North American Indians Edited By John H. Moore, Larry Burt

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This book consists primarily of essays that were first delivered before the Twelfth International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences held in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, in 1988. Billed as Marxist in perspective, it seeks to show that Indian history should be seen more as economic conflict than cultural clash.

In the introductory piece the editor provides an excellent overview of the history of political economy in general and its use in anthropology in particular. The articles that follow vary widely in length, scope, and quality. All somehow explain the motivation behind governmental policy, as well as developments within Indian communities, as …

[Review Of] Janet D. Spector. What This Awl Means: Feminist Archaeology At A Wahpeton Dakota Village, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1995

[Review Of] Janet D. Spector. What This Awl Means: Feminist Archaeology At A Wahpeton Dakota Village, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Janet Spector has written a book which is enjoyable, enlightening, and though-provoking reading. Those involved in anthropology, history, gender studies, and ethnic studies would do well to read this small volume carefully and ponder its issues. As she promises in the book’s subtitle, Spector presents archaeological evidence pertaining to the Wahpeton Dakota (Eastern Sioux) within a framework which lacks the Eurocentric and androcentric perspectives which too often characterize the study of American Indian pasts.

My Own Drum : Activist Women Remember The 1960s And 1970s, Gina Vivinetto Jan 1995

My Own Drum : Activist Women Remember The 1960s And 1970s, Gina Vivinetto

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Being a woman in the 1960s and 1970s must have been an extraordinary thing. The times were turbulent, filled with chaos and change. The globe pulsed with mayhem and newness. Women were grappling with an emerging feminist movement, getting their heads together, figuring out where they stood on issues like the Equal Rights Amendment, the Pill, and Roe v. Wade, trying to liberate themselves, men, everybody. Race relations were being seen for what they were: strained, fake, embittered. Women were making connections between racism and sexism, pointing an accusatory finger at something called a "patriarchy."

"Oral histories provide one of the richest sources of information about the people, places, and events of the past, and libraries can be in the forefront of collecting and preserving this treasure trove. This article examines the role of oral history in historical scholarship, suggests ways in which libraries might develop oral history programs, and provides guidelines for conducting interviews and establishing programs. -Ed."

Aboriginal Adaptations On The Colorado Plateau: A View From The Island-In-The-Sky, Canyonlands National Park, Utah, Alan J. Osborn, Jesslyn Brown, Galen Burgett, Linda Scott Cummings, Ralph J. Hartley, Susan Vetter, Jennifer Waters, Tony Zalucha

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

This final report documents the results of archaeological inventory, excavation, and analysis of prehistoric cultural resources within a 45-kilometer (28-mile) long corridor in the Island-in-the-Sky District of Canyonlands National Park, Utah. During three field seasons of survey, mapping, and excavation in 1983-1985, the research team recorded 32 artifact scatters, plotted 90,000 prehistoric artifacts and 250 historic items, completed 600 one-square-meter test pits, and conducted 10 block excavations. Block excavations at two locations in Gray's Pasture revealed a plant processing/hunting field camp (42SA16858) and a disturbed pithouse (42SA8506). Associated features and materials included a puddled clay-lined hearth, a slab-lined pit, a …

Looking Like What You Are: Race, Sexual Style And The Construction Of Identity., Lisa Walker Jan 1995

Looking Like What You Are: Race, Sexual Style And The Construction Of Identity., Lisa Walker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This project explores the function of body politics in constructing minority identities, or how people's physical and stylistic attributes are invested with meanings about who they are. It is interested in how race and sexual differences are defined in the confluence of discourses around visibility and invisibility. The first two chapters set up the parameters of in/visibility with regard to sexual and racial differences in readings of two paradigmatic texts about visibility, Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness, which produces the lesbian as visible in the figure of the butch, and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, which explores the paradoxical notion …
