The Center Of The Universe: A Ceremony At Pipe Spring Sweat Lodge, James E Mccarty

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Sweat Lodge at Pipe Spring is a healing place for many people. The spiritual leader of the lodge is a Southern Paiute man who conducts open ceremonies so that all people may participate in the process of cleansing body and spirit. The ritual process brings together the positive effects of group interaction and fosters spiritual growth for individuals and the group. The Lakota style sweat lodge ceremony was introduced by an Assiniboine man and the ceremony has incorporated Paiute and Christian elements through cultural adaptations. Though the ceremony has been borrowed and has undergone some changes, its effectiveness as …

The Saga Of Indigenous Peoples In Brazil: Constitution, Law And Policies, L. Roberto Barroso Jan 1995

The Saga Of Indigenous Peoples In Brazil: Constitution, Law And Policies, L. Roberto Barroso

St. Thomas Law Review

In 1979, when the military rule in Brazil was coming to an end, I dedicated some of my time to student political activity supporting the return of democracy. Several students used to show their political beliefs by posting banners on the windows of their cars. I had several in my car. One of them, probably the one that raised the most curiosity, read: "For the demarcation of indigenous lands." It was very charming, but none of us knew exactly its real meaning and implications. As far as I can remember, that was the first time I ever cared about Indians. …

Individual Versus Society: The Cultural Dynamics Of Criminalizing Suicide, Benjamin P. Fay Jan 1995

Individual Versus Society: The Cultural Dynamics Of Criminalizing Suicide, Benjamin P. Fay

UC Law SF International Law Review

Various societies try to deal with the problem of suicide by criminalizing assisted suicide, attempted suicide, and sometimes even suicide itself. In the United States, suicide and attempted suicide are generally no longer criminalized. However, many states are grappling with the question of whether to criminalize assisted suicide. This Note examines suicide laws in two very different cultures, England and India, in order to determine whether there is a common lesson to be learned. The author concludes that the resolution of the question of whether to criminalize suicide or attempted suicide involves weighing the individual's interest in self-determination against the …

Survey Of Hematozoa And Intestinal Helminths Infecting Green-Winged Teal In Guthrie County, Iowa, Rick Klann, Bryan Hellyer

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Five helminths and one sporozoan were recovered from 21 hunter-killed green-winged teal collected from Lakin Slough in Guthrie County, Iowa during October and November of 1991. The sporozoan, Leucocytozoon simondi, was identified in blood smears from all 21 teal. The helminths recovered from the alimentary tract included three trematodes, Cotylurus flabelliformis, Echinostoma trivolvis and Zygocotyle lunata; a hymenolepid tapeworm; and one acanthocephalan, Corynosoma constrictum. The ecological factors associated with infection by these parasites are discussed.
