Sediment cores were collected inside and outside of a bed of a bromophenol-producing marine polychaete, Notomastus lobatus, and examined for impact of the bromophenols on sediment microflora and meiofauna around N. lobatus burrows. No significant differences were found between microbial parameters measured inside and outside of the N. lobatus bed. Integrated 6 cm cores taken adjacent to N. lobatus burrows contained 1.2 x 10⁹ bacteria ml^-1. Cell numbers were similar at control sites within the bed, but away from burrows, and not significantly different from cell numbers (1.0 X 10⁹ cells ml^-1) at a …

Translational Correlations In The Vortex Array At The Surface Of A Type-Ii Superconductor, M. Cristina Marchetti, David R. Nelson

We discuss the statistical mechanics of magnetic flux lines in a finite-thickness slab of type-II superconductor. The long wavelength properties of a flux-line liquid in a slab geometry are described by a hydrodynamic free energy that incorporates the boundary conditions on the flux lines at the sample's surface as a surface contribution to the free energy. Bulk and surface weak disorder are modeled via Gaussian impurity potentials. This free energy is used to evaluate the two-dimensional structure factor of the flux-line tips at the sample surface. We find that surface interaction always dominates in determining the decay of translational correlations …

Jan Tschichold: Contrast In Theory, Thérèse Hannigan

Theses

Jan Tschichold was a brilliant typographer who dramatically influenced graphic design and printing with his contrasting theories of design. He began as a proponent of the so-called "new typography" and then pursued the revival of more traditional styles. Because Tschichold's diametrically opposed theories about typography continue to appeal to a large audience, this exhibit of his evolution as a typographer is useful and important. This exhibit is an overview of his writings and typography concentrating on his dramatic stylistic changes. The exhibit is accompanied by a poster, annotated catalog, and descriptive labels.
