Distributed Heterogeneous Supercomputing Management System, Arif Ghafoor, Jaehyung Yang Oct 1992

Distributed Heterogeneous Supercomputing Management System, Arif Ghafoor, Jaehyung Yang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

An efficient use of a Distributed Heterogeneous Supercomputing System (DHSS) requhes a thorough understanding of applications and their intelligent scheduling within the system. In this paper we present a general management framework for the DHSS, by introducing an application characterization technique, called Code Flow Graph (CFG) and Code Interaction Graph (CIG). These models are based on code profiling and andyticd benchmarking and provide a detailed archiitecturaldependent characterization of DHSS applications. A generd cost function is presented that is based on the execution and 1/0 overheads associated with applications. An optimd scheduler tries to minimize this cost; the design of which …

Novel Approach To Fuzzy Logic Controller Design For Systems With Deadzones, Jong-Hwan Kim, Jong-Hwan Park, Seon-Woo Lee, Edwin K. P. Chong Oct 1992

Novel Approach To Fuzzy Logic Controller Design For Systems With Deadzones, Jong-Hwan Kim, Jong-Hwan Park, Seon-Woo Lee, Edwin K. P. Chong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Existing fuzzy control methods do not perform well when applied to systems containing nonlinearities arising from unknown deadzones. In particular, we show that a conventional fuzzy logic controller applied to a system with a deadzone suffers from poor transient performance and a large steady-state error. In this report, we propose a novel two-layered fuzzy logic controller for controlling systems with deadzones. The two-layered control structure consists of a fuzzy logic-based precompensator followed by a conventional fuzzy logic controller. Our proposed controller exhibits superior transient and steady-state performance compared to conventional fuzzy controllers. In addition, the controller is robust to variations …

Time Complexity Of A Path-Formulated Optimal Routing Algorithm, John K. Antonio, Wei K. Tsai, G. M. Huang Oct 1992

Time Complexity Of A Path-Formulated Optimal Routing Algorithm, John K. Antonio, Wei K. Tsai, G. M. Huang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A detailed analysis of convergence rate is presented for an iterative path formulated optimal routing algorithm. The primary objective is to quantify, analytically, how the convergence rate changes as the number of nodes in the underlying graph increases. The analysis is motivated by a particular path formulated gradient projection algorithm that has demonstrated excellent convergence rate properties through extensive numerical studies. In particular, the empirical data suggests that the number of iterations required for convergence to within a small fraction of the optimal cost is relatively independent of the number of nodes. Deriving a correspondingly tight analytical bound for the …

A Phorbol Ester Response Element Within The Human T-Cell Receptor Beta-Chain Enhancer., Haydn M. Prosser, David Wotton, Anne Gegonne, Jacques Ghysdael, Shuwen Wang, Nancy A. Speck, Michael J. Owen

Dartmouth Scholarship

The activity of the T-cell receptor beta-chain gene enhancer is increased by activators of the protein kinase C pathway during T-cell activation. Analysis of mutant enhancer constructs identified two elements, beta E2 and beta E3, conferring phorbol ester inducibility. Multimerized beta E2 acted in isolation as a phorbol ester-responsive element. Both beta E2 and beta E3, which contain a consensus Ets-binding site, were shown to bind directly to the product of the c-ets-1 protooncogene. Both regions also bound a second factor, core-binding factor. Mutation of the beta E2 Ets site abolished the inducibility of the beta E2 multimer. beta E2 …

Childhood Typhoid Fever Diagnosed In An Urban U.S. Setting., Surinder K. Sodhi, Stephen C. Eppes, Joel D. Klein Oct 1992

Childhood Typhoid Fever Diagnosed In An Urban U.S. Setting., Surinder K. Sodhi, Stephen C. Eppes, Joel D. Klein

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

The majority of cases of childhood typhoid fever diagnosed in the United States occur in persons recently returned from travel abroad. We report two childhood cases of typhoid fever acquired in Mexico and India and diagnosed in an urban United States setting. This report describes these cases and provides insights into the pitfalls in recognizing this condition in a nonendemic setting as well as information concerning differential diagnosis and treatment.

The Formative Years Of A Saint: Vincent De Paul: 1595–1617, Stafford Poole C.M. Oct 1992

The Formative Years Of A Saint: Vincent De Paul: 1595–1617, Stafford Poole C.M.

Vincentian Studies

This investigation of Vincent de Paul’s formative years reveals his humanity and shows his sanctity was achieved slowly, not as the result of dramatic events as tradition holds. The first part of this work covers the period between his schooling in Dax and his 1605 disappearance. The second explores the Tunisian captivity. The third consists of the time between his arrival in Paris and the mission at Folleville. The main assertions follow. Vincent probably was ordained earlier than the prescribed age of twenty-four. Such irregular ordinations were common at the time. Contrary to tradition, he did contest the possession of …

Becoming A Bishop And Remaining A Vincentian: The Struggles Of Archbishop John Joseph Lynch, C.M., Richard J. Kehoe C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Members of the Congregation are not to seek the Church’s honors. For this reason, the nineteenth general assembly (1843) declared that Vincentians who assumed episcopal positions without the superior general’s consent would be deprived of suffrages for the dead. Vincentian John Joseph Lynch was the third bishop and first archbishop of Toronto. Although he wrote to Superior General Jean-Baptiste Etienne about his appointment to the bishopric, he did not receive a reply. His well-known dedication to the community, an assurance from his predecessor that Etienne had consented to his elevation, and the fact that he wrote to Etienne had led …
