The need to accelerate privatization is the paramount economic policy issue facing Eastern Europe. If there is no breakthrough in the privatization of large enterprises in the near future, the entire process could be stalled for years to come. Privatization is urgent and politically vulnerable; such international institutions as the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development can help speed the process byprovidingfinancial and technical support for the key operations of mass privatization. A general, systematic and improved numerical formulation for the three-dimensional (3-D) groundwater flow and solute transport problems was derived, using the finite element method. In the numerical formulation, a hidden mistake, which has appeared in many textbooks and journal papers dealing with the advective term of the general 3-D solute transport equation, was found and corrected. Some simpler and practical expressions for the leaky boundary condition, surface flux condition, and sources and sinks were proposed. Future space missions planned by NASA will be more complex in nature than current missions scheduled as part of the Space Shuttle Program. Examples of future missions include the construction and inhabitance of space stations, orbital transfers, and Lunar/Mars transfers and descents. The Space Transfer Vehicles (STV's) that will perform these missions must have the capability to provide deep-engine throttling thrust. To accomplish this, the turbopumps used to propel the STV's in space must operate at off-design flow rates to provide a wide range of flow outputs. A graph with many vertices cannot be homogeneous, i.e., for any pair of integers (i,j) all large graphs must contain either a complete subgraph on i vertices or an independent set of size j. The Ramsey number for (i,j) is the smallest integer R such that all graphs with at least R vertices have this property. For example, the (3,3) Ramsey number is 6; if a graph has 6 or more vertices, then is must contain a triangle or an independent set of size 3. The (4,4) Ramsey number is 18, found in 1954 [GG] . Various implementations using stochastic and rule based approaches were created and applied to analyze the original melody as well as the chord progressions. Two proteinases designated 1 and 2, purified from the gut of partially engorged female, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus have been characterized. Both proteinases hydrolysed denatured haemoglobin (Hb) at acid pH, with Michaelis constants (KM) of 1.19 g/100 ml (proteinase 1) and 0.71 g/100 ml (proteinase 2). Pepstatin competitively inhibited both proteinases, with a K1 of 1.7 nM (proteinase 2). Both proteinases were also inhibited by 1 mM phenylmethylsulphonyl fluoride (PMSF). The pH optimum for proteinase 1 was 3.0, with a smaller but distinct second peak at pH 4.6. For proteinase 2, peak activity was at pH 2.6 with a second smaller peak …

Tilapia zilli (Gervais), a larvivorous fish identified in the Mwea Rice Irrigation System (Kenya), was evaluated in the field to assess its potential for biological control of mosquito larvae. The study was conducted from October 1991 to April 1992 in experimental ponds constructed at Mbui-Njeru, which is one of the 36 villages in the irrigation scheme. T. zilli was found to be extremely effective in controlling mosquito breeding that persisted throughout the study period. However, the presence of vegetation and turbidity significantly reduced its efficiency in predation. The negative effects of vegetation could be averted by combining T. zilli with …

Mating behavior of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood males, inoculated with the DNA virus during the third-instar larval stage, and sexual receptivity of females premated with such males were studied in the laboratory. Like normal males, the virus-infected males readily located females and mounted them instantaneously. The mean duration of copulation was similar in both normal and infected groups, and all males in both groups experienced the final jerking phase before separating. The value for the degree of insemination (mean spermathecal value) for the females mated with normal males was significantly greater than that for the flies mated with the virus-infected …

Chloroperoxidase is an enzyme that exhibits spectroscopic and structural properties similar to cytochrome P-450. Chloroperoxidase is studied using resonance Raman spectroscopy to characterize the reaction intermediates of the physiological mechanism, known as compounds I and II. Compound I is formed by a two electron oxidation of the resting enzyme and contains an Fe(IV) porphyrin ℼ cation radical. A one electron reduction of compound I produces the compound II intermediate which contains an oxy-ferryl [Fe(IV)=O] iron heme.

Oculomotor deficits are now recognized as being present in several neurological diseases of the basal ganglia. The present report will focus primarily on those observed in Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases. Neuronal cell loss in the pars compacta of the substantia nigra, degeneration of the nigrostriatal pathway, and consequent depletion of the neurotransmitter dopamine is the most obvious etiological abnormality in Parkinson's disease. Huntington's disease, on the other hand, involves the selective genetically-driven atrophy of the striatum (caudate and putamen). The activity of protein kinase C (PK-C) has been implicated in regulating the growth and differentiation of both normal and neoplastic hematopoietic cells. We have examined the effects of the PK-C activators, phorbol 12,13- dibutyrate, mezerein, and bryostatin 1, on the proliferation and lineage commitment of enriched CD34+ human myeloid progenitor cells stimulated by lL-3, GM-CSF, stem cell factor and the lL-3/GM-CSF hybrid cytokine plXY321. Coadministration of these PK-C activators with plateau concentrations of rlL-3 or rGM-CSF induced 100-150% increase in the number of day 14 CFU-GM.with a selective stimulation on neutrophil and macrophage lineages while inhibiting eosinophilic growth. plXY321 …

For example, in a clinical trial comparing the efficacy of a new treatment with that of a standard treatment, rather than measuring the main response variable only once on each patient, or subject, we can take several measurements over time on each subject.

Stem cell factor (SCF) is a recently characterized hematopoietic growth factor capable of stimulating the proliferation and differentiation of many hematopoietic cells, including the mast cell. We have cloned the gene encoding SCF from a cDNA library prepared from NIH 3T3 fibroblasts, and have characterized the ability of recombinant SCF to induce the development of mast cell-committed progenitors (MCCP), found in the mesenteric lymph nodes of mice infected with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nb-MLN), but not naive mice. We have also examined Schwann cells, mast cells, and reproductive tissues for their ability to produce SCF.

The purpose of this study was to determine the demographic characteristics, instructional approach, perceptions toward inservice training, and awareness and use of adult education theory/principles of public-school affiliated GED instructors in Virginia who teach writing skills for the essay component of the GED Writing Skills Test. An additional purpose of the study was to compare student performance on a sample of GED essays to determine the relationship of student performance with teacher demographic characteristics and teacher instructional approach as identified by the product and process scale scores.

Historically, however, parents have been described as uninvolved in their adolescents’ sexuality education. Few data exist that explain either parents’ non-involvement or adolescents’ perceptions of parents as resources to support healthy sexual development. Existing research adopts a narrow, social control perspective on adolescent sexuality and on evaluation of community-based sexuality education programs. The essential socio-political question abortion raises is twofold: within whose legitimate province is the abortion decision to be made and what are the salient factors in determining subsequent resolutions over access. The answers speak to perceptions of legitimate authority, which are fundamental to the social construction of abortion.

There are widely used as Switch-Mode Power Supplies in office equipment applications ranging from Personal Computers to Office Printers and Copiers. The distorted input current waveform extracted by the capacitive input filter of the power converters produces unwanted harmonics which propagates to other line powered equipments.
